I’ve almost caught up now. My god Steph is tooth grindingly annoying, and Des isn’t much better. Ken’s turned into a total asshat, I wish they didn’t have quite so many scenes of him and Wendy getting physical 🤢.

I agree the charm is fading away, I know I’ve said this before but it’s only two years since Hilda left but the program is very different now. However it’s not all fields, I can’t imagine any modern soap having a story line where a character is in a wheelchair complaining about access and the viewer is meant to be on the side of those mocking him (even if it is Percy).

Yes there's definitely been a dip in the quality. Instead of heartwarming and heart wrenching stories we have Mike Baldwin's business woes, Ken's dreary affair and the unlikable and badly written Steph.

And what has happened to Sally? She used to be so fashionable and pretty. Now she's been all frumpified in shapeless jumpers and mummy jeans with her hair pulled back into a messy pony tail. Is it to highlight Steph's vampish glamour?

Just looked at the 1990 Corrie wiki page and I was reminded that the year was a bit of a dull one for Corrie.

Angie Freeman comes into it later in the year - did anyone else like her?

Rita closes the current Kabin and opens the present one.

I, who don't generally swear, just had DD in paroxysms of laughter by shouting "shut up Ken you total cunt!" at the TV today. He's an absolute arsewipe and Kevin wasn't much better when he manhandled Sally.

Why are the writers behaving as if Tracy is ten years old? She's a teen, she doesn't need a babysitter. And she should be able to cook simple stuff safely by now - Ken and Deirdre should have seem to that.

Corrie (then and now) writes children of her age really weirdly - they're either infantilised, or they're giving birth. IRL most 13 year olds were/are being left alone at home with no problems and were/are not sexually active.

A pregnancy announcement without the usual soapland not eating/morning sickness/mix up with pregnancy tests etc. I assume that Gail will find out she's expecting soon (I didn't watch very often when it was on the first time).

I thought the point of the chip pan Fire storyline was to show that Ken was being utterly unreasonable, because Deirdre hadn't done anything wrong/unusual. And of course to introduce the new man. Ken's finding out that the grass isn't greener, and that there's no way back. (Well, not for years......)

I left the telly on after Corrie one day this week, and in the programme which followed, Inspector Morse used the exact same idiom. It must have been considered OK back then

Never a fan of Deirdre at the time I was upstairs listening to my tapes but Ken Barlow is an absolute arse. I have 2 memories of Deidre (I don’t have many memories at the best of times)

One when she’s crying on the sofa when she’s found out about the affair and a later one where’s she’s sat on the sofa watching TV laughing and Ken looking down at her being all smug with himself

I absolutely love classic Corrie, but I can't believe the behaviour of some of the men.

Ken is an absolute arse, I can't believe how unlikable he is.

Kevin constantly shouting at Sally, he must have a sore throat with all that shouting.

Kevin and Martin manhandling Sally and Gail. Awful to see Martin forcing Gail to keep the baby knowing that he goes on to have an affair in the future. It's as if Gail could see the future.

Jack and Vera are horrible to each other, but he's another pig.

Still love the show, probably quite a true reflection of life at the time. Makes todays Corrie look an utter joke.

You can see it very very slowly becoming more sensationalist.
