Bet has always worn wigs and hair pieces but when this current showing of Classic Corrie started Rita did have her own hair (1984?) as you could see her scalp - ne episode she very noticeably had swapped to a wig as her hair was a much pinker red and much more voluminous - it was quite jarring.

Juliana Marguiles who has beautiful natural hair wore a wig throughout the Good Wife - she said it saved lots of time as the wig was prestyled and always perfect and consistent (if a bit sweaty) - so she got an extra few hours with her child in the morning.

Do these episodes make anyone else pine for the 80s and early 90s? Everything seemed so simple back then.

Dolly Parton once said “ I don’t know how long it takes to do my hair, I’m never there at the time”. It’s a good way for keeping your own hair healthy. Cher is great example as well.

You do occasionally see Bet without the wig when she’s not done up to the nines. I think the character of Bet wears a wig rather than Julie Goodyear iyswim.

I’ve started watching the classic EE, it’s so different in tone to Corrie, there’s no warmth or charm. It’s interesting to watch but I’m not really enjoying it in the same way.

I love Classic Corrie a heck of a lot more that the modern version. I'm loving the arrival of Jim and Liz - how much has Liz changed over the years?! I save a weeks worth up and then watch it at the weekend with the ironing. Bet is just a legend.

Have got Classic EastEnders saved up too, again it used to be so much better than it is now.

Both shows should have stayed at 2 or 3 episodes per week.

Yep I’m enjoying classic Corrie far far more than Corrie now too.
I really care and believe in the characters- Deirdre and Bet both fantastic. Love all the small scenes in the shop/cafe. Percy and Phylis too are so funny. So many funny lines in every scene almost very witty humour that’s true to their personalities doesn’t feel forced like now when they get Mary to do something daft here and there.

Absolutely love Classic Corrie. It's a great bit of nostalgia and it really cheers me up.
I loved how Rita had a full on nervous breakdown in Blackpool and had completely lost the plot, then as soon as Alan Bradley got run over she went instantly back to normal lol.
It's 1990 now. I think Des and Steph Barnes will be coming into it now the new houses are finished. I think I remember a running battle between him and Derek

Yes they did. Des kept stealing the gnome from his garden

I hated the Barnes couple so it'll be interesting to see if they still get on my wick this time round!

Oooh I'd forgotten about them. I'd also forgotten just how bloody wonderful Bet was till I started watching this!

All the Sally and the baby stuff is making me laugh, knowing as we do that she's shortly going to be up-duffed with Rosie.

cloudyweeweeI loathed Des and Steph too - so annoying and not funny. Like you, II'll be interested to see if I feel that way this time around. I used to loathe Alec but appreciate what a good actor Roy Barraclough is this time round and find him quite amusing.

Lizzy I thought Rita losing the plot so suddenly and entirely and then total recovery was a weak part of the plot especially as the rest was so well done (the growing menacing behaviour of Bradley etc). Bet has been incredibly kind to many people especially Tina (who has done nothing to deserve it).

Yes, I love Bet, she is my fav character.

Just catching up loved Sally leaving the baby outside the shop. Imagine if you did that now!

My recollection of old corrie was that I really didn't like Bet. But she's lovely. Nothing like I remembered her

I think she has mellowed a lot by 1990.

Alec and Bet are wonderful together, both of them tough cookies but when they let their soft sides show it's very touching.
Anyone else remember Alec and Les Dawson doing the housewife sketches?

Cissie and Ada!

Cissie and Ada were fab. I can't stand Tina and the baby storyline seemed to go on forever.

I dislike Tina as well and the vile yet gormless thug Eddie. Tina keeps saying "he has a lot going for him!" err - what?

Report
SuperSuperSuper · 16/08/2018 16:46

Tina is portrayed as this femme fatale (wolf whistles from men, Jack risking his marrIage for her) but I don't see her as particularly attractive (and I do mean Tina, not the actress). She's brash and quite blokey I think, and doesn't dress that well. It was realistic that Mark wasn't interested in her.

Roy Barraclough had a successful comedy career and didn't want to be in a soap long-term but he enjoyed acting with Julie Goodyear, so agreed to numerous contract extensions. What an inspired pairing, they're great.

Tina is meant to be tarty and men seem to like that

I've just watched a few of these lately and I have to say something very, very weird. Sean Wilson isn't the best looking guy in the world. And he was super dorky looking in the 80s. But there is something really sexy about him in some of his scenes. When he convinced her not to throw him out after the whole going to Jenny thing, there was something quite appealing about him.

Thinking back, I think that as gross as the whole Martin/Katy thing was, there was something sexy about him then too.

Report
kikashi · 18/08/2018 11:10

I think Martin seemed very natural with Gail. the way he touched her face and hair and looked at her and quite quiet and understated in his declarations - not all shouty like Kev would be.

I do think Gail was harsh making Martin choose between her and Jenny - Jenny had no one and was in a dreadful state and an awful situation.

Oh god Katy and Martin I had forgotten about her! Suicide by a can of coke and a lump of sugar
