I've just watched a load of episodes on the bounce so not sure if it was Friday's or today's but as soon as Maurice Jones mentioned his daughter and son-in-law I realised it was Steph and Des and got ridiculously excited!

Is Katy the nurse Martin has an affair with?

Report
SallyCinnamon3009 · 21/08/2018 10:54

Katy was much later late 90s or early 2000s. She was about 16/17 I think and had an affair with Martin who at the time would have been late 30s or early 40s. He had been helping her with a diabetes diagnosis and they last shacked up. She ended up killing her dad and then commuting suicide by drinking a can of coke and eating a bag of sugar.

Loved the Happy Mondays playing in the background in the cafe. We're definitely heading to a new era. The references to recycling, and vegetarianism becoming more mainstream too...

Lots of girls in my year had Steph's haircut - a version of the 1960s purdy. I think it was popularised on Dallas by a character called Michelle who had an amazing blonde version.

Has Tracy gone into her lengthy "cassette listening" phase now? Will she re-emerge as Kate Ford? Tbh I don't really rate the recent Tracy actress, I thought she struggled a little bit in her scenes during Ken's affair/departure. Not that I'd have been any better at her age!

I'm loving this so much! It's one of my favourite things on telly currently (not exaggerating).

Some of the lines are brilliant. Bet asked Alec if he fancied her, and he says” well I let you do my washing, don’t I” and Mavis with Victor, Derek said she is like Marilyn Monroe!

I thought Rita's and Mavis exchange in the cabin about never having children and what good mothers they would have made was very well done and very sad

I’m desperately trying to catch up on two weeks of these right now so I’m a bit behind.

It definitely does feel like a new era, it’s hard to imagine Hilda in the street in 1990 even though it’s only a couple of years since she left.

The main cassette listening phase was between 83 and 85 when there was no actress cast as her. The 'current' actress is Tracy no3; Dawn Acton, who'll be in the role for another decade.

God Derek is a right pain in the arse. He's awful

I can't help hoping Eddies ex runs away with the baby. The storyline is ridiculous. You'd think no-one had ever seen a baby before

I’m really enjoying the episodes but I’m now wishing they had started earlier in the eighties - I do love a bit of 1980s nostalgia. We could have enjoyed the delights of Elsie Tanner and Fred Gee!

cloudyweewee · 28/08/2018 17:48

Fred Gee used to seriously give me the creeps! The Barnes annoy me just as much as when I first watched this.

SuperSuperSuper · 29/08/2018 14:01

Fred Gee (Fred Feast) was pretty difficult irl according to Lynne Perrie's autobiography.

Apparently Bet wears a wig just to save time doing her hair now she's the landlady (this from Julie Goodyear's autobiography). Her real hair was much nicer though.

Report
PrincessWire · 29/08/2018 16:59

When you see her without her wig - when she's in her nightie etc - her hair is really long. How does it all fit under that wig?

Report
CoolCarrie · 29/08/2018 22:59

There will be a skull cup underneath.

Report
CoolCarrie · 30/08/2018 09:05

You plait the hair and then wind it up around the head, then pin it with Kirby grips. Put the cape on, it needs to be tight, and then the wig, using pins again, then style the wig to cover any grips, then hair spray.

It’s a wee bit sweaty but does protect the real hair.

More co op product placement with Steph Barnes in 1990!

Report
ChubbyBabe · 30/08/2018 15:18

Never liked Des and Steph the first time I watched, the Steph woman is a terrible actress.

I loved Amelia Bulmore in "Scott&Bailey" and she also appeared (along with most of Corries cast) in "Happy Valley"

Did Lesley Sharpe ever appear in Corrie?

Report
cloudyweewee · 30/08/2018 22:02

She also played Alan Partridge's girlfriend.

I think I'm going to stop recording this. The charm and gentle humour are starting to disappear and crass characters like Steph and dull ones like moany Don and irritating Wendy are featuring too much.

I might start rewatching when Raquel arrives.

Redglitter · 31/08/2018 11:17

Have to agree Lydia I'm finding I'm fast forwarding it a lot more than I used to.

Ooh I couldn't abide the Raquel character , and it put me right off Sarah Lancashire , I was very meh about 'Happy Valley' till I watched it (very recently) .
I suppose a lot of soap stars get 'stuck' with their character.
