yay!
much much better than silent witness

OP posts:

Felt sorry for Malone. I guess the programme makers had to tie things up there. He was innocent, but a bit of a loose cannon - roaming around town with his gun. I don't suppose they would want him roaming around the Island for the next series.

What happened to the artist lady who got beaten up in her house. Assume that was the ex partner who did it.

Inkanta · 21/03/2018 16:40

.. and we never saw Alan again - poor lad!

CountessOfStrathearn · 21/03/2018 17:37

"What happened to the artist lady who got beaten up in her house. Assume that was the ex partner who did it."

I thought it was Lars who attacked her.

StickStickStickStick · 21/03/2018 17:51

Lars did looking for Salls memory stick.

I thought there was more to hear from her though!

Kikashi · 21/03/2018 18:44

Did Lars attack deaf lady whilst looking for the memory stick? or was it her ex who they took into custody but who claimed she had invited him to Shetland to apologise for lying about the violence?

FloraFox · 21/03/2018 19:42

Women stranglers are very uncommon and women killing women is also very uncommon but both also happened in a previous season (I think). I love Shetland but the twist of the murderer being a woman doesn’t last four seasons.

ArcheryAnnie · 21/03/2018 20:08

FloraFox I felt that about Lewis, which I also loved, but got very fed up of spotting the murderer, as if there was a clever older woman in the picture, she did it.

StickStickStickStick · 21/03/2018 20:12

I think it was lars - didn't he then turn up at the hospital loo king for it?

FloraFox · 21/03/2018 21:54

AnnieArchery I haven't watched Lewis. I know there is always some level of suspension of disbelief when you have these cops in rural areas with all these murder cases (I'm sure a cop in Shetland would be surprised to get more than one murder case in their whole career). Ann Cleeves has criticised the usual woman-hating murder narrative in lots of crime drama which I agree with:

www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/10952716/Ann-Cleeves-attacks-glib-depictions-of-murders-of-women.html

so I appreciate her taking a different approach. I do like the idea that women are not just confined to the victim role but it is a bit much in my view.

diddl · 21/03/2018 22:06

My goodness what a rollercoaster.

Fabulous.

The actor playing Thomas-brilliant!

Terrifying/menacing/pathetic-the whole gamut!

HouseOfGoldandBones · 21/03/2018 22:21

Thought the actor playing Thomas was superb.

Can someone help though? What was the significance of the photograph of Donna on the Ferry? Have I completely missed something?

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 21/03/2018 22:29

I thought it was because that was the island where the body was found?

timetobackout · 21/03/2018 22:31

House .Because the body of Lizzie was found on Unst and the photo was taken on the Unst ferry the day after he murder

Notonthestairs · 21/03/2018 22:31

It showed Donna on her way to Unst -,which was where Lizzie's body was abandoned - the morning after she went missing.

Brilliant series - although I did feel a little short changed and I don't know why. Maybe Malone's untimely death was so unjust that it threw me. But great acting.

Mrsmadevans · 21/03/2018 23:14

I loved the series but the death of Tom Malone really didn't sit well with me . Why oh why can't the writers give us a happy ending now and again. Agree re the acting it was terrific.

Theswaggyotter · 21/03/2018 23:19

Fantastic series, Thomas Malone actor outstanding. I always felt he would die somehow, he would never have been able to rebuild his life as he was too damaged by what had happened in the past. I think it was the right ending, him trotting off into the sunset would have been all wrong

Agree also acting between dougie henshall and mark bonar was amazing.

The only annoying thing is that we have to wait another year for the next series - it’s the best thing on tv!

diddl · 22/03/2018 08:51

I was confused as to how old everyone was supposed to be!

Thomas had been in prison 23yrs.

I know he was "framed"-but if the key was moving a body in a car on the ferry-could he even drive/have accessed a car?

It fell down for me at that point a bit.

Plus killing your daughter!

ChoccyJules · 22/03/2018 08:59

I felt the Thomas heart attack was true to life in that Tosh had just been kind to him and he visibly relaxed. Am not a medic but I have been told that people can keep going on stress and adrenalin but if that reduces they can succumb to stuff.

SpringHen · 22/03/2018 10:25

Thomas was never going to get a happy ending.

It was almost a best case scenario that he lived long enough to see someone else charged, but I dont think it would have been enough to stop him from being suicidal had he not had a heart attack TBH. He had lost so much Sad

twinklefeather · 22/03/2018 10:29

Poor Thomas I actually cried. Bit crazy at times but overall a great series, looking forward to next year!

Clawdy · 22/03/2018 10:33

It was stretching it a bit to have Kate fancying Thomas, he was really unattractive and odd-looking. Unless under that beard, he was gorgeous! Also he kept dribbling a bit.....

Melamin · 22/03/2018 11:11

What was the significance of the photograph of Donna on the Ferry?
Thomas had previously been 'seen' on the ferry by Drew's informant and this had been a key piece of evidence. Donna had claimed to have been at home.

Melamin · 22/03/2018 11:17

Dramatically, it was very thrilling and satisfying.

There are a few holes, like Drew killing his only daughter, and the women of Shetland valiantly closing the gap in the murder statistics between men and women. I am still not sure who beat up the artist lady that fancied Alan.

I am enjoying watching the old series over again.

ReelingLush18 · 22/03/2018 11:21

The writing was on the wall for Thomas all along though. There were earlier scenes where he was clearly clutching at his chest in discomfort. Didn't make it a good ending (sniff). He deserved some happiness but maybe knowing that he'd been exonerated was enough for him?

I wonder if Alan is going to be welcomed into the Cassie, Perez and Duncan family fold now??? Some way for Cassie to be distracted from her broken heart...

diddl · 22/03/2018 11:56

" I am still not sure who beat up the artist lady that fancied Alan."

I was thinking Lars to get the memory stick back?
