Is anyone rewatching Friends on Netflix?

I was a big fan back in the day and thought Ross and Rachel were so romantic but upon rewatching, he's really unpleasant isn't he? Controlling, manipulative, gaslighting - I bet she lived to regret not taking the job in Paris!

And Joey is meant to be a big stud but he's just a bit of a sex pest and extremely stupid!

And yes I know it's "just a tv show" but it's funny how I'm noticing these things now and didn't when I first watched it.

Really really didn't like Susan.

Eggzandbacon · 24/01/2018 16:52

Susan is a total cow

Alwaysinmyheart · 24/01/2018 18:41

There’s a thread on Twitter discussing possible new plotlines, I’ve copied some of the best ones!

FRIENDS 2018 PLOTLINES

Phoebe goes to a Woman's march a day early
Ross starts a youtube channel for Paleontology
Joey accidentally creates a Grindr profile
-Chandler won't shut up about how funny his Vines were
-Ed Sheeran cameo interrupts Phoebe's Central Perk set
-Ross gets everyone into Bitcoin
-The One Where The Gang Realizes Their Privilege
Ross's tweet is featured on Buzzfeed but Chandler accuses him of stealing the tweet.
Monica goes on Hell's Kitchen and becomes famous for making Gordan Ramsey scared of her.
😀

It being 20 years old isn’t an excuse for the homophobia, porn and stuff.

Agree with a PP that Big Bang Theory is just as bad now.

dingdongdigeridoo · 24/01/2018 19:39

I’m on season 4 and think I’ve noticed the most unrealistic plot so far. Phoebe has her embryo transfer and is told to wait ‘a couple of days’ to take a pregnancy test. But she insists that her body works fast, and gets a positive in the afternoon. How the hell does that work? Surely it takes a good couple of weeks to get a positive result?

Gwenhwyfar · 24/01/2018 22:00

What are people's problems with Big Bang?

100YearsOfVote · 24/01/2018 22:21

Despite being a sexist womaniser and wearing too big clothes, Joey is strangely shaping up to be my fav male.

It's not so much he is so fabulous, but Ross is now unbearable to me, and Chandler is blah.

Ross is seriously appalling in the episode where Ben has a doll. It just wasn't funny.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 24/01/2018 22:30

The leg on the fire has to be the most un-pc plot line.

I remember thinking it was regressive at the time. It was so Men are from Mars.

But I still love it.

QuiQuaiQuod · 26/01/2018 13:00

I always wonder when they had the power cut how Monicas house phone still worked!

Love it, love it, love it.

And I love Ross.
Rachels a prize bitch.

Chandler and Phoebe are my faves.

My Monica most fave lines is -when Chiop picks her up for a date and shes running from the bathroom- ''not yet not yet not yet not yet....''. Grin.

Ross- PIVOT! This is Vickram. My sandwich! and many more.

Chandler- millions, but my fave is when he imitates Janine ''oh Chandler, I just lost myself in the movement!''

Phoebe- the songs, and the way she mumbles merry christmas to Chandlre down the phone.

Joey- just being so dense.

and yy Fresh Prince all black cast, as were Desmonds (mostly) and Cosby show amongst others. no one complaining there eh?

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/01/2018 13:50

As someone said earlier, in the Fresh Prince and Cosby Show, the characters were all related to one another. Hence them all being black. Plus black families were underrepresented on TV.

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 26/01/2018 14:30

Phones weren't electric.

As Queen says, there were (are) a tiny number of sitcoms with a largely black cast compared to a huge number without. If you think the number of black sitcoms produced in either the US or U.K. is remotely representative of the population watching, you are kidding yourself.

AintNoOtherFans · 26/01/2018 15:34

The one thing that really bugs me is at Monica and Chandler's wedding, all of a sudden it's discovered that Joey had small feet! Surely by serious 7 they would have realised that fact!

MsHarry · 26/01/2018 17:06

Friends is not supposed to be representative of perfect people all relating to each other perfectly, never saying or thinking or feeling the wrong thing. It is not a model for society to follow. IT'S A COMEDY!!!!

MsHarry · 26/01/2018 17:08

Guess what ? All my friends are white. Not by choice, just how it is. Putting black people in a cast to make up numbers is a huge insult to black people.

Graphista · 26/01/2018 19:35

MsHarry not by choice? Where do you live? I livd in a quite out of the way rural place, still got friends of various backgrounds/descent.

Gwenhwyfar · 26/01/2018 20:23

Graphista - I live in a city and all my friends are white too. It's not deliberate.

SusanBunch · 26/01/2018 20:24

Guess what ? All my friends are white. Not by choice, just how it is. Putting black people in a cast to make up numbers is a huge insult to black people

This is true. Even in 2018, most people do not have an ethnically diverse circle of friends. Also, the thing about Friends was that the the friends did not really have many other friends other than each other. Therefore the major supporting cast was family members (who would obviously be the same race as the main cast). There were a number of small roles played by non-white actors, including Charlie, Julie, and Kristen who is the girl that both Ross and Joey date.

But have the people who moan about Friends actually watched How I Met Your Mother which ran up until 3 years ago? All white cast, virtually no non-white supporting cast, hideous misogyny from most of the characters, including an episode where Barney sells a woman he is dating to another man. It's way way worse than Friends ever was.

I also refuse to accept that the Carol and Susan thing was homophobic. The jokes are at Ross' expense. Both Carol and Susan are portrayed as level-headed and sensible- much more so than the main characters. Their wedding was broadcast at a time when coming out was a massive deal. You should watch Ellen DeGeneres coming out publicly on the Oprah Winfrey show and people in the audience were standing up and calling her disgusting etc. That was the sort of time in which Friends portrayed a committed and loving lesbian couple getting married with the support of their friends and successfully raising a child together. That is way ahead of its time.

BexConnor · 26/01/2018 20:56

I never realised until recently rewatching some of the episodes just how horrible the characters sometimes act. They are AWFUL to each other and to other people.

That said it's still a bit of a guilty pleasure and does make me laugh now and again.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 26/01/2018 21:00

HIMYM was way worse in terms of sexism. Barney was an absolute FHM grade dickhead. And much worse than Joey who at least had a softness about him.

DeleteOrDecay · 26/01/2018 21:22

Oh god, I despise Barney in HIMYM. He makes me irrationally ragey.

Graphista · 26/01/2018 23:26

Sorry I find it really odd you live in a city and have NO non white friend's.

Susan - it's not so much carol and Susan's relationship that was the subject of the homophobia, the homophobia was more on the subject of gay men

Gwenhwyfar · 27/01/2018 11:40

"Sorry I find it really odd you live in a city and have NO non white friend's. "

Why is it odd? I suppose there's lots of other categories of people not in my friendship group as well. You become friends with people you meet in a social situation, and sometimes work colleagues, and none of them happen to be non-white at the moment.

I live in a mixed area, but I don't make friends just by walking in the street. They come from my social life. I suppose my city is somewhat split by community. I often see groups of people from the same origin walking together.

Gwenhwyfar · 27/01/2018 11:41

"Susan - it's not so much carol and Susan's relationship that was the subject of the homophobia, the homophobia was more on the subject of gay men"

The male characters didn't want people to think they were gay. That's not because they're against gay people, it was just because it would hurt their prospects with women. I don't find that homophobic. Most single people want to be known as the sexuality they are.

QuiQuaiQuod · 27/01/2018 19:52

I WANNA I love Mike too.

one of my fave lines is by him.
''I love you Phoebe, which is something I probably shouldnt say in front of my parents...and Tome and Sue who by the way are the most sinfully boring people Ive ever met!'' (or words to that effect)

BackToBasics4 · 27/01/2018 22:13

I've been watching it all day and whilst it's a bit dated in terms of fashion etc I really don't see what all the fuss is about because it's still a funny show! People are just taking all too seriously!
