Is anyone rewatching Friends on Netflix?

I was a big fan back in the day and thought Ross and Rachel were so romantic but upon rewatching, he's really unpleasant isn't he? Controlling, manipulative, gaslighting - I bet she lived to regret not taking the job in Paris!

And Joey is meant to be a big stud but he's just a bit of a sex pest and extremely stupid!

And yes I know it's "just a tv show" but it's funny how I'm noticing these things now and didn't when I first watched it.

@Lj8893 Yes, agree about Monica and Chandler. Their relationship is great and they actually evolve as people and as a couple. Their struggle with infertility is actually quite touching.

Joey on the other hand, seemed to DEvolve as the years went by. And don't get me started on the travesty that was him and Rachel! They could've smartened him up, like they did briefly when he first fell for her, but instead they dumbed her down,

@CrazyExIngenue Jennifer Aniston's nipples certainly should have their own star billing! On another note, I think I'd still wear pretty much everything Rachel wore from about season 5 onwards!

I noticed the nipple showing too! Men did that in the 90's too, when they pulled up their trousers with a belt to show off their tackle.

SnugglySnerd · 16/01/2018 09:22

Ross was never very likeable but two of my favourite Friends moments involved him - the spray tan and the teeth whitening!

I think his character was meant to be like that and that's why Rachel split up with him. Yes they got back together eventually but they'd both changed on that time. Especially Rachel she'd worked on her career and become independent compared with Episode 1.

TheQueenOfWands · 16/01/2018 09:22

I was on Ross's side during the sandwich debacle.

You don't just a take someone else's lunch. Not even during the 90s. It was bang out of order.

If he'd written on AIBU we'd all have been on his side.

dutysuite · 16/01/2018 09:24

Never liked in back in the 90s and could never get into it. I wonder if I would like it now?!

Hmm, if he did an AIBU about the break, what do you think the outcome would be?

Honestly, I always agreed with him, they were on a break.

FuckMyUterus · 16/01/2018 09:31

I was rewatching an episode of Only Fools And Horses recently (which I absolutely love) and was shocked to hear Del Boy refer to his local shop as the 'paki shop'! I never remember this being a racist show, so clearly we don't think things through the first time we see them!

QueenOfTheAndals · 16/01/2018 10:12

I can see his point on the break thing but it's his behaviour prior to that that was awful.

I don’t think it holds up for repeat viewing. It was only good for the first few seasons anyway.

CrazyExIngenue · 16/01/2018 10:14

Absolutely! Huge red flags!

TheQueenOfWands · 16/01/2018 10:34

They were indeed on a break.

Shoxfordian · 16/01/2018 11:50

I've been rewatching! Some of the fashion is definitely questionable in the first few series....!

Agree Ross is a complete idiot. I always thought he was ok but now rewatching it, I don't like him at all. He's controlling and insecure.

I know they were on a break but he still shouldn't have just gone and slept with someone else so quickly.

Wilberforce42 · 16/01/2018 11:54

Why all the anti friends angst now it’s on Netflix - it’s been on Comedy Central on loop for years and no ones batted an eyelid. Yet another example of the media telling people to be offended.

DeleteOrDecay · 16/01/2018 12:09

Oh for goodness sake no one is 'offended'. It's called having a discussion, is that not allowed?

We don't have comedy central but we do have a Netflix sub. I'd imagine it's the same for many given how extortionate the big tv packages and how cheap Netflix is in comparison.

Idontevencareanymore · 16/01/2018 12:19

I love it. It's my guilty pleasure. I don't find all of the jokes funny, maybe I never did!
For a programme that's 2 decades old, it's good.

I didn't like Ross originally but they were on a break. He was a shallow arse sleeping with the xerox girl but he didn't cheat.

squoosh · 16/01/2018 12:23

SO much Friends angst. Do people feel they need to be able to point out that things have changed since the 90s?

Guess what, 25 years from now some of the big shows will be seen as just as dated.

squoosh · 16/01/2018 12:24

And wasn't Ross always a cunt? Mo mother certainly thought so although admittedly she didn't use that exact term.

HamishBamish · 16/01/2018 12:26

I'm re-watching it and it's still really funny if a little outdated in parts. Of course there are things I notice more now as times have moved on since the 90's, just like with any other TV show.

insancerre · 16/01/2018 12:27

Dd 21 is hooked
She was shocked when I said i had never watched it

YourVagesty · 16/01/2018 12:29

I really, really don't get this sudden Friends backlash

Me neither - it's not as though it's just appeared out of nowhere. Friends has been re-run on a loop constantly since it ended. I don't know why it's suddenly taking people by surprise. My ex's teenage children constantly have it on E4

howthelightgetsin · 16/01/2018 12:36

What I think is funny about Friends is how by the later series (say 5,6 onwards) the first few seemed SO dated in terms of clothes and hairstyles and everything. They dated really quickly. But the later ones, again just talking aesthetically, don’t seem as long a go as they actually are. It just seems there’s a huge gulf between the start to the end, like fashions suddenly updated overnight.
Maybe it’s also things like the type of camera used? The first few seasons always looks so old .

I used to watch when I was younger only for Chandler and Monica and Rachel. I never got the appeal of Phoebe and particularly not Joey.

QueenOfTheAndals · 16/01/2018 12:38

It's just a conversation/discussion, which is what internet fora are for! I doubt any of us are losing any sleep over who was right about the break thing.

OP posts:
GetDownDog · 16/01/2018 12:38

Friends has been re-run on a loop if you have sky.
I haven't watched it for years.
I'm enjoying it, but seeing different things in it than I did as a younger woman, which I find interesting. No backlash though, just discussion.
