Is anyone rewatching Friends on Netflix?

I was a big fan back in the day and thought Ross and Rachel were so romantic but upon rewatching, he's really unpleasant isn't he? Controlling, manipulative, gaslighting - I bet she lived to regret not taking the job in Paris!

And Joey is meant to be a big stud but he's just a bit of a sex pest and extremely stupid!

And yes I know it's "just a tv show" but it's funny how I'm noticing these things now and didn't when I first watched it.

And yes, the word Paki has always been racist!

Wilburissomepig · 16/01/2018 20:09

Well I loved it then and I love it now.

Weebo · 16/01/2018 20:21

Hah, I'm binge watching it now.

I bloody love it for the glorious clothes alone!

QueenOfTheAndals · 16/01/2018 20:24

But I can't get exercised about something that was made 20 years ago. There is far worse going on in the world right now!

Who's getting exercised? We're just having a discussion about it. I didn't know MN was limited to serious threads only these days!

Who's getting exercised?

badabing36 · 16/01/2018 20:44

That is genuinely terrifying weebo.

Has anyone seen the comeback with Lisa kudrow? It’s really good but really uncomfortable to watch. It seemed to me to be a quite accurate depiction of the shit women have to deal with in Hollywood.

Hi all,
We've had some suggestions that we should move this to Telly Addicts so that it doesn't disappear. Is everyone on board with that?

ObiJuanKenobi · 16/01/2018 21:01

I'm binge watching it at the moment. It's awful but I love it!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 16/01/2018 21:02

Ross is alright when not with Rachel or with anyone. Rachel was a cow though, when Ross was with someone, she was horrid.

Phoebe was the only one I really liked because you know where you were with her.

I’ve actually watched a few episodes today, and couldn’t believe how sexist Chandler is.
In one episode he tells Joey he needs to “man up” and ask his roommate Elle McPherson to get rid of all the pink girly stuff around the flat because it was making him “turn into a woman”.

He also tells Monica they’re “one sachet away from turning into a lesbian couple” and he needed to do “man stuff” to feel like himself, like drink beer and play videogame or something.

So bad.

But I still laughed at Rachel thanksgiving desert. “Mince meat pie”Grin

Well pot-pourri and Anne Geddes prints were hardly 'Joey' things were they? I don't think those examples from Chandler so awful - it was funny! Don't people have 'man caves' etc? Obvs women mighy like the same type of place but i think you csn overthink these things. I am v mucg about eithersex being able to do what they want but if my dh said he was going for a spa day with afternoon tea and prosecco with the lads Id raise an eyebrow! Or have the adjectives masculine/feminine disappeared? Confused

formerbabe · 16/01/2018 21:49

I was always perplexed that Monica was meant to be OCD yet the apartment looked so unbearably cluttered!

calzone · 16/01/2018 21:51

I’m loving it but cringing at the same time especially as my 13 and 15 year olds are watching it and it’s very sexual in part......

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 16/01/2018 21:52

DONE.

mikado1 · 16/01/2018 21:53

But a place for everything and everything in its place formerbabe!

Gwenhwyfar · 16/01/2018 22:06

"if my dh said he was going for a spa day with afternoon tea and prosecco with the lads Id raise an eyebrow!"

In one episode Joey gets a handbag. Even now, we'd be surprised at a man with a handbag.

I loved it at the time and still do now. Not bothered by the things people complain about on MN. The thing that did bother me at the time was Ross's reaction to the male nanny, but I'm afraid we haven't progressed at all in terms of men working with small children.

mikado1 · 16/01/2018 22:07

Yes but Ross' reaction was laughed at...and wasnt he great? :)

JakeBallardswife · 17/01/2018 11:48

I used to think it was quite cutting edge at the time. Now watching it again, it does seem dated. Everything was bouncy and dated.

QueenOfTheAndals · 17/01/2018 12:17

It was more a satchel than a handbag and I do see men carrying something similar on my morning tube commute!

@howthelightgetsin You're right - the fashions up until about season 4 look incredibly dated but I'd still happily wear most things on Monica and Rachel from 5-6 onwards - Monica's wedding dress is still a model or simplicity and the dress Rachel wears in the one with the videotape could easily be worn in any office today. And their arms gave me serious bicep envy!

This is a good article, How modern technology would ruin Friends!

Two things that have always bugged me about Friends.

  1. surely due to to time difference and distance Pete couldn't possibly have taken Monica for dinner in Italy on their first date?

  2. why did Ross have to count to 5 before turning around in the tanning cubicle? Surely it would just spray, when it finished he could turn around and wait for it to spray the back? Why the counting to 5 (mississippilly or otherwise?!)?
