drywhite that's just how I did it, watched then read, and am now matching up to the tv to the books. On balance I prefer the tv! I don't think I like DG very much, I'm always slightly pleased when I read that she's pissed off that they rejigged some of her ridiculous story lines, to make them better, or actually work as a story.

I don't share my obsession over outlander with anyone*. I know someone quite sane who likes outlander stuff on fb, we went through North and South together, but we're not close anymore. Outlander is too intimate to share for me. Which is quite stupid, I suppose.

  • apart from all of you lovely lot, of course Grin
Lessstressedhemum · 27/10/2017 10:12

I think poor Sam is coming in for a lot of stick over not crying. I actually thought his suppressed emotion was more powerful than if he'd bawled his eyes out. See, this is why the nutty fan groups annoy me. It's an adaptation not a word for word transcription.

I don't think DG comes across very well at all. I think she believes her own hype and loves the worship she gets from all the "greatest writer of modern times" folk. I personally find her quite grating in interviews and the like and she definitely doesn't like to be questioned about any of the dodgier content of the books.

GreatWhites

Apparently there are hordes of middle aged women hugging standing stones across Scotland.

I watch Outlander but... I don't know if I like it. Confused
I like the sets and the costumes. But I don't fancy Jamie/Sam so miss out on a lot of the fuss there. And I don't like Clare.

I read most of the books but eventually gave up as it seemed like DG just wanted every character to be miserable. I suppose I watch in the hope the tv series is happier!

I like Roger (in the tv series. Again, DG seemed to dislike him!).

Anyway, my contribution to this thread is: I went to Culloden in 2014, it's only a few hours away. As DH and DD and I wandered about the battlefield, listening to the information tapes, I became aware of a Canadian couple behind me. The woman was telling the man all about the battle. And about one man in particular. And his wife. And how he had to send her back through stones to the future to save their baby... I realised she was telling the story of Outlander as though it was real life

She genuinely seemed to believe Outlander was all real. All of it. Like a bit of casual time travel took place...

Anyway. I will keep watching...

Lessstressedhemum · 27/10/2017 10:49

Oh there are definitely hordes of middle aged women hugging standing stones. And so many people leaving things at the Clan Fraser stone at Culloden that the Trust has had to ask folk to stop leaving things and whatnot. HH is full of pics of women leaving tokens at/stroking the Fraser stone.
It's not real, it's only a story.

LonelyOversharer · 27/10/2017 11:21

Ok, I feel sane again now!

What is this HH? Is It something good for a giggle at the crazies?

Are these ladies genuinely hoping they'll fall through a stone and find Jamie on the other side? That's both hilarious and slightly sad (in a non teenagy that-sooo-sad kinda way).

MoNigheanDonn · 27/10/2017 12:02

Makes me feel sane too. They filmed near me at Drumlanrig Castle...this was before I discovered Outlander or I'd have been there sculking

Lessstressedhemum · 27/10/2017 13:00

Heughan's Heuligans. It's a FB group of Sam/Outlander fans. It is part hilarious, part terrifying and part full of hot pictures of Sam/Jamie.

Feel sane, my friends. One woman who lives near where they were filming last week walked past 3 times in different jackets/avec dog/sans dog, just so she could stalk Sam and get pictures with both Sam and "Jamie". In the middle of the night no less. (Hopes she isn't on here!) However, my children say that just because they are sadder than me, does not mean that I am not pathetic.

gincamelbak That's quite sad and scary at the same time. Shock

Piffpaffpoff · 27/10/2017 15:23

I may have skulked at some Outlander filming. There was a while there that they seemed to be filming at different locations near me for weeks on end. Not recently though.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 27/10/2017 15:36

Can I introduce a discussion topic while we wait for episode 7?

The physical similarity between Black Jack and Frank Randall...
I know in three tv series, this is heightened by having the same actor play them both (and as very different characters). But beyond her shock when Claire first meets BJR, how much does it feature in the books?
For instance, does Claire ever let on to Jamie that BJR is Frank's doppelganger?

ToniMumsnet · 27/10/2017 17:27

One thing I noticed in the book was that She also thought Jacks brother was a closer match to Frank Randall.

MoNigheanDonn · 27/10/2017 17:41

That would make sense if the whole Alex/Mary/Jack thing happened in the books?

snozzlemaid · 27/10/2017 17:42

I don’t remember C ever telling J that they looked so alike. But there’s an awful lot from the books I don’t remember so don’t take my word for it.

ToniMumsnet · 27/10/2017 17:59

The Alex/Mary/Jack did happen in the book.

But Jamie was a witness to the wedding. Because Mary doesn't know whats between Jamie and BJR.

MoNigheanDonn · 27/10/2017 18:18

Im excited to read them once season 3 is finished. Planning one episode a week too, hopefully that will get me through to season 4 Halloween Grin

Lessstressedhemum · 27/10/2017 18:34

Both Alex and Jack look like Frank in the books. She mistakes Jack for Frank at the start and then later Alex for Jack, although there are subtle differences. She doesn't tell Jamie how alike they are, no. The wedding is really strange as Claire and Jamie are witnesses and then Jamie takes jack back to his barracks, safely escorting him through the Scottish held streets of Edinburgh. Neither Mary or Alex were aware of the situation between Jamie and Jack.

More to the point, I never understood how she could look at frank afterwards and not see jack.i couldn't have.

ToniMumsnet · 27/10/2017 18:38

I have always thought that too. How could you go back to living with a man who looks exactly like a man who tried to rape you twice and tortured your husband? It's really very weird.

MoNigheanDonn · 27/10/2017 18:54

My husband doesn't watch it, but is usually in the room when it's on and he asked the exact same thing!

I couldn't bring myself to like Frank because I hated Jack so much!

SenecaFalls · 27/10/2017 19:08

But I think that one of the things that is so really good about Tobias's performance is that the characters are so very different. I seldom saw Black Jack in Frank or vice versa. It was a truly phenomenal set of performances. And another way in which the TV series is better than the books.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 27/10/2017 19:39

@SenecaFalls I agree-TM played BJR with certain physical habits (that weird thing he does with his mouth) which Frank didn't do.
I wonder how Jamie felt when Claire insisted that he couldn't kill BJR (otherwise Frank wouldn't exist as his descendant in the future) then they discovered that BJR was not the father of Frank's great great great etc grandfather, merely the uncle who happened to be married to the child's mother!

Lessstressedhemum · 27/10/2017 19:58

That hasn't been explored yet. It might come up as Dennis Randalstown Isaacs comes more into play. It's an interesting question.

Seneca, Tobias was brilliant in the way he played both roles. There are so many things the show does better.

OP posts:
LonelyOversharer · 27/10/2017 20:10

I found the way Tobias did that awful breathing in noisily thing as Frank utterly repulsive. Did anyone else notice him doing this? It has to be deliberate as the sound guys would have noticed it. Made me dislike him so much. If I'd have been Claire I'd have left him for that alone! He doesn't do it for Jack I don't think. Must go and watch some of season 1to check...

Although I found both characters repulsive, Tobias is just excellent (I loved his cameo in Catastrophe too, so unexpected). If Frank did look so much like BJR how on earth could she have even touched him? Was this her "eyes closed, blind with need" thing? As we think she let Frank shag other people because she loved Jamie so much, maybe it was also because he was too much like BJR?

GreatWhites · 27/10/2017 20:17

I've never noticed Confused

It's a good point... not only wrt to Jamie's rape but also the abuse of Fergus.
