I love old episodes. I bought some DVDs a couple of years ago, and wallow in them. Grin

zukiecat · 08/12/2017 18:42

The Christmas episode today was nice

Everyone in The Rovers having a good old singsong, That never happens any more

I'd forgotten how funny and brilliant Bet Lynch was

Grunkalunka · 08/12/2017 22:07

Yes,the Christmas episode was lovely - real sense of camaraderie and community.Even Vera was being lovely.
I liked Sally and the boys climbing on the booth seats in the pub - a bit of youthful exuberance. Surprised Bet didn't tell them off.

Martin doesn't seem that enthused by Jenny.

Christmascheerful · 08/12/2017 22:58

I'm loving these classic corries... seeing such a different side to the characters (just to say I wasn't even born when they first aired Grin)
That scene in the rovers where Sally runs along the booth she's like a little pony! So youthful! And Jenny shes always known how to wrap Rita round her little finger

MrsSteveMcDonald · 09/12/2017 17:49

It's quite funny seeing cheeky Sally, Mayor Sally definitely wouldn't approve of anyone acting like that these days

cocoboots · 09/12/2017 22:23

I've missed it all week :(
Oh that warbling female singer with the sax in the rovers was hilarious, she was even wearing a shell suit !

Rachel0Greep · 10/12/2017 15:14

I love the old episodes. So many absolutely classic moments, some hilarious, some so very very sad. Hilda crying over Stan's glasses, Vera when she discovered that Terry had sold the child... Viewers cared do deeply, because the portrayal of the characters was so real.

I was lucky enough to visit the Corrie set some years ago, and that is another reason I love the old episodes. It was such a fun experience, and getting to walk on the famous cobbles was something special for me.

Rachel0Greep · 10/12/2017 15:15

...so deeply...

ScarletPower · 10/12/2017 15:58

Just googled it. The Wendy Crozier and Ken Barlow storyline was in 1989. Her first appearance was in June 1989.

Alan Bradley also met his demise in 1989

I think we have just viewed the final week of 1986.

I can't remember when they started showing more episodes than 2 per week though.

A year's worth of episodes (104) at the rate of 2 per weekday will see us at the end of 1987 in 21 weeks if my maths is correct.

In 1987 we have the following to look forward to

  • Sarah Louise is born in February.
  • Ian Latimer (the Australian) returns briefly
  • Hilda Ogden leaves
  • Don Brennan appears
  • Susan Baldwin is written out (pregnant but tells everyone she has had a termination)
  • Eddie Yates returns for one episode (Hilda's last)
  • Alec and Bet get married
  • The Mavis & Derek storyline is ongoing throughout
  • Jenny and Martin run away together

So not actually many 'sensational' storylines, it was just about the characters and their interactions with the other characters.

Wiki (where I have got the above from) states in 1990+ the show switched to issue led storylines.

It seems nowadays they think of a story line and say "which character shall we give this to" rather than the storylines developing from the character.

10 weeks no? 104 episodes/10 a week = 10 weeks? or a week's worth of episodes in a day = 5 weeks of episodes a week = 52 weeks in 10 weeks

southeastdweller · 10/12/2017 16:35

It went to three episodes a week in October 1989.

Also in 1987, Alf and Deidre compete to be the local councillor and Alf has a major heart attack because of the stress of it. It’s a long time ago but I can still remember the story, and it was done so much better then than recently with Sally and Norris, which was very heavy-handed.

ScarletPower · 10/12/2017 16:48

Gawd sorry my maths is crap. No idea how I arrived at that calculation!!!! DUH

scrabbler3 · 10/12/2017 18:09

At 10 eps per week, it'll eventually catch up with the modern day.

Anyone care to calculate when? 😀

Christmas Eve on Classic Corrie:

Gail stares miserably into the distance
Brian stares miserably at Gail staring miserably into the distance
Ivy grins maniacally at the pair of them staring miserably Grin

Did make me laugh, that.

ChevalierTialys · 11/12/2017 13:45

Really felt the awkwardness of Rita walking in on Jenny and Martin kissing. With the lights dimmed and don't give up playing in the background. Very real-life cringe moment!

Kannet · 11/12/2017 15:01

I loved when Hilda said " something always goes wrong at Christmas and new year. So true if soaps

Even the theme tune is soothing Smile

Smarmydrippings · 11/12/2017 15:16

When this episode first aired I was 29 days away from my first child being born and was in hospital on bed rest with signs of pre eclampsia.
It's weird watching it again with that child being a 6'2" train driver about to buy his first house.

TealC · 11/12/2017 15:52

Kevin's jumper Grin

Grunkalunka · 11/12/2017 19:38

yes, kevin's jumper - what a pastel delight!
I want to go to a cosy pub and have a sing song round the piano and call people "cock", "chuck" and "our kid"

Kannet · 13/12/2017 15:23

Nicky was a terrible actor. Surely they could have found better

OP posts:
Iwantacampervan · 13/12/2017 20:27

Gail's comment today after getting the divorce papers 'what will become of me?' - well, where would you like us to start....
Martin looks so young - when did he and Gail get together ?

cloudyweewee · 13/12/2017 21:40

Nicky didn't get any better so they binned him off when got older and brought in that bloke with the pecs and floppy blond hair. In real life Nick would only be about 35 but the bloke who last played him easily looked mid 40s.

scrabbler3 · 14/12/2017 20:11

Pecs bloke who played teen Nicky later tried and failed to be a conservative MP I think.

At least Nicky is in it, albeit staring inanely into the middle distance. ....these days, kids are forgotten about if it suits the story whereas in '86/87 Nicky is in a lot of scenes with Gail apart from when she's at work.

cloudyweewee · 14/12/2017 20:33

Ah but you're forgetting about how a teen Tracy disappeared for about 5 years. She was always upstairs ' playing her tapes'.
