I loved Gail's coat. I'd happily wear that. Had to laugh when Bet said Betty would have to go topless to pull in the punters!

thewooster · 01/12/2017 12:58

The Mavis/Derek situation with the stationery order is making me laugh. Mavis getting herself into a tizz and Derek is worried Angela will find out about his other woman. I love watching them.

Like the pp said, so many great characters especially the women. Bet and Hilda are fab.

CoolCarrie · 01/12/2017 15:04

The drunk guy singing Ave Maria and Bet's face!

CoolCarrie · 01/12/2017 15:08

Abide with me, I don't even know you! Says Bet!

southeastdweller · 01/12/2017 23:08

I watched today's double bill from late 1986 and agree with everyone who's said it's like watching another show compared to the crap that's on now.

Maybe the writers now think viewers don't have the attention spans for long scenes, which there were plenty of in the old days. I think long scenes often work well in soaps because you get to know the characters more, their motives, their backstories etc, and that's where the Corrie of old excelled - characters. Characters you recognised, who entertained you, angered you, characters you always had an opinion of. No or very few sensationalist stories were on then, every episode was a celebration of the 'ordinary'.

Tony Warren must be turning in his grave Sad

scrabbler3 · 04/12/2017 17:52

That pub singer was the ultimate 1980s woman 😂 the hair, the outfit, the warbling, the sax.

Is Sue Jenkins due to go on maternity leave, hence the brother/Canada storyline? Her son Richard Fleishman who played Craig would be about 30 now I think?

EdithWeston · 04/12/2017 18:41

Sally has only been married a few weeks, and already she's pushing Kevin into acquiring a share of the garage!

Couple of years before that becomes possible, isn't it?

southeastdweller · 04/12/2017 19:48

Yes she went on maternity autumn 1986 because of her eldest child, not Richard.

MrsSteveMcDonald · 04/12/2017 20:26

My 5 year old has been watching it and says it is good but the new one is rubbish.

scrabbler3 · 04/12/2017 23:15

MrsSteve - I like the sound of your 5 year old!

scrabbler3 · 05/12/2017 22:06

Did Curly go out with Shirley from the factory, or am I misremembering that?

southeastdweller · 05/12/2017 22:14

He definitely did.

BringMeTea · 06/12/2017 14:55

Just watching this today. So good. Anyway, will Susan’s demise be shown in the near future? We can all look out for teenage Billy in the car. Grin

Grunkalunka · 06/12/2017 16:37

Teenage Billy (as if?) Grin
I think Susan's demise wasn't until about 2001and by then she had dark hair and was played by a different actress (briefly) IIRC.

Gatekeeper · 06/12/2017 16:45

I'm looking forward to the Des Barnes, Raquel and Tanya the minxy barmaid story. Was a belter that one

scrabbler3 · 06/12/2017 19:26

Ooh that was a brill storyline. I liked Des and I loved Raquel. I used to enjoy Raquel's comic scenes behind the bar with Bet and Alec.

The Mcdonalds must be due to arrive soon.

cloudyweewee · 06/12/2017 20:23

According to Google, Steve arrived in Corrie in 1989.

Mrscaindingle · 06/12/2017 20:51

I liked the bit where Hilda commiserated with Rita about it being the 3rd anniversary of Lens death. Very moving and the sort of real low key conversations between characters that soaps don't seem to do anymore. Jean Alexander was a very good actress wasn't she.

scrabbler3 · 06/12/2017 20:54

Jean Alexander was great.

I also loved the conversation in the Rovers between Sally's Uncle Tom and Hilda. It is powerful because it is everyday, well-observed dialogue.

EdithWeston · 07/12/2017 07:38

Yes, MrsCainDingle I noticed that too.

Together with references to being in touch with people by letter, little bits of news about wider family etc.

ImInABubble · 07/12/2017 10:57

I am quite liking some of the clothes, I think the 80s are in again, but maybe not for me, who was there the first time! Grin

ImInABubble · 07/12/2017 11:12

and who thought Phyllis' s hair colour would be in fashion, I kinda like it!

Iwantacampervan · 07/12/2017 15:41

I'm enjoying watching these when I can - especially when you know what happens to the characters/actors. Martin mentioning 'maggoty cheese' today made me smile - I hope he doesn't sell it now!
Cringing at the fashions as they've given me flashbacks.

scrabbler3 · 07/12/2017 21:51

Did Tracy end up training as a florist with Maggie? It's ringing a bell.

Has Wendy Crozier been and gone, or did she come into it later?

I'm remembering loads, but failing with the timelines!

Grunkalunka · 08/12/2017 11:14

I think Wendy Crozier is a bit later - but given that we are getting over a month's worth of classic corrie each week it might not be too long.

Tracy did train to be a florist with Maggie at Maggie's flowers IIRC. I get confused about the timelines too.

Laughed at Percy Sugden telling Mavis she lacked tact! How fantastic is Bet (and strange)? Rita wrecking Jenny's first kiss with Martin - so much better and realistic than current Corrie - Faye with a baby at 12/13 and HIV boyfriend.
