I think Lynne Perrie was a very lonely lady and her don’t think it was at all spiteful to say that Betty Driver and Eileen Derbyshire were deadwood, because they were, compared to how much mileage Ivy had with stories.

CourtneyLovely · 18/06/2018 22:04

Been off work ill and just discovered this - have now set to record! What year are we actually in? About 89?

southeastdweller · 18/06/2018 22:24

Yep, May 1989.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 19/06/2018 11:21

I’m a bit puzzled about the layout of Alf’s flat. When Shirley’s sister stayed she was shown sleeping on the sofa, but Bet once platonically lived there with Alf, presumably sleeping in separate rooms. Were Bet and Alf actually secretly shacked up, was one of them using the main room as a bedroom, has Alf had building work done which has reduced the size of the flat, or is it one of those magic soap opera properties which expands and contracts depending on the number of inhabitants?

kikashi · 19/06/2018 12:30

I think it has always been a 2 bed. I suppose Shirley didn't have spare mattress for the room - although Curly could have studied in the spare room.Kevin and Sally also mentioned it was a 2 bed. Shirley and Curly seem to have left all their furniture and they bought a bed which would not have been cheap back then.

It’s Thelma ( Mavis ) Barlow’s Birthday today, she is 89! She was brilliant in Corrie and DinnerLadies, a real memorable character actress, unlike the crowd in Corrie now

BluthsFrozenBananas · 19/06/2018 15:10

I guess they left their furniture behind as they had no where to put it.

Who's going to be the next resident of the flat once Bet is returned back to her rightful place as queen of the Rovers?

kikashi · 19/06/2018 17:39

I think it might be Reg Holdsworth but I also seem to remember Ken living there for a bit (maybe during/in the aftermath of the Wendy Crozier affair?) around the start of the 90's.

drearydeardre · 19/06/2018 17:48

coolcarrie
thank you for reminding me about Thelma Barlow - I caught an episode of dinnerladies and thought how surreal and funny it was with good actors and script. They don't make them like that anymore.
She is so effective as the dithery Mavis facing up to and trying to control Derek - I wish current corrie had such good actors (and script)
She has written books too - on organic gardening - good for her and I did not know she was brought up in a single parent family during a very tough pre-war Britain.

On another note - has Jack Duckworth been at the grecian 2000 - his hair looked very odd. Grin

CoolCarrie · 19/06/2018 18:36

It’s funny to watch Dinner Ladies and spot the cast members who have appeared in Corrie, either before or after, From Val Barlow to Eileen Phelan, I am sure it was deliberate on the part of Victoria Wood.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 19/06/2018 20:34

There was a recent short documentary series on Gold about dinnerladies. In it they said Victoria Wood was a Corrie fan, when she heard Thelma Barlow was leaving she swooped in straight away and asked her to be in dinnerladies.

On a completely different note, at this point does Tracy know Ken isn’t her biological father?

CoolCarrie · 19/06/2018 21:00

Yes, Tracey does know, she has always known about Ray being her real dad.

Redglitter · 19/06/2018 22:18

Ken officially adopted Tracey a few months ago (episode wise) & there was quite a thing made about it.

CoolCarrie · 20/06/2018 15:48

Oh that was brilliant , Audrey’s face when she saw Alf dancing with someone else!

ChevalierTialys · 20/06/2018 16:51

I often think Audrey could do with getting a bit jealous over Alf. Just to remind her to be a bit more considerate of him.

WolfMcWolferson · 20/06/2018 17:05

Alf is a great character I think. Just lovely. When Audrey used to talk about him in present day Corrie I didn't really pay attention but now I "know" him it's nice.

cloudyweewee · 20/06/2018 18:26

One of my earliest Corrie memories was when Alf was married to Renee. She gave him a kiss on the lips and I remember saying "Yuk!". My Aunty Florrie said that when I grew up I would realise that Alf was a very lovely man. Aunty Florrie, I still wouldn't want to kiss him, but you were right!

kikashi · 20/06/2018 19:15

Didn't Alf wear a bowler hat way back? Also, when I was young I got the impression that Renee thought Alf had married her so he could give up his job and take over "her" shop or perhaps it was my gran who kept saying he only married her for the money. She never liked Alf and thought he was a skinflint and was annoyed at the easier life he gave Audrey compared to Renee. I quite like Alf - he is a good character actor.

Lizzy1980 · 22/06/2018 04:30

I'm really enjoying the old Corrie episodes. I vaguely remember most of the storylines but I've now seen a lot of the characters in a different light.
I hadn't realised what a self righteous bully Ken Barlow was and what a whinge bag Gail was.
Percy is hilarious.
Thoroughly enjoying it, if the soaps were a bit more like that these days I'd probably start watching them again. There isn't a murder/explosion/kidnapping every other episode. Just normal people leading normal lives, love it

Delamereroad · 22/06/2018 13:31

Been enjoying these classic episodes whilst recovering from minor op.
I wish they would show classic Brookside
That show actually influenced my decision to go to university in Liverpool!!
Then went on to Manchester to work so maybe corrie had a subtle influence too.
Agree characters miles better than modern soaps - haven't regularly watched a soap since 1990s

cloudyweewee · 22/06/2018 18:16

Tina looked bloody horrible in that cycling shorts combo.

SuperSuperSuper · 23/06/2018 10:31

I can't see Mark being imterrsted in Tina - I remember that boys like him went for the gorgeous girls. And her manipulation of Curly wasn't particularly endearing.

Wendy Crozier has arrived! It confused me that she was the mole, I was convinced that she worked for Ken at the paper. Must have misremembered. His affair storyline with her was very good iirc, I am really looking forward to the next few months. I'm sure it'll be well written and acted.

southeastdweller · 23/06/2018 12:10

Super You're not misremembering - Wendy works with Ken at the paper after she leaves her current job at the council.

SuperSuperSuper · 23/06/2018 12:44

Ah thanks south. I thought I was going mad!
