Unbelievable that Tracy is in hospital alone ! Just an occasional visit from her mum and a phone call

Kikashi · 12/02/2018 16:16

I'm surprised they are allowed to visit so much. I remember visiting my young brother in hospital around that era and visiting was 10 -12 in the morning and then 3 -5 in the evening - a bell was rung and you had to leave. I remember how sad he looked clutching his cuddly monkey when we left.

CoolCarrie · 12/02/2018 16:25

For the benefit of Kannet, Rita saw Martin in his car, and goes around to his house, but his dad said he was out at a disco, and knows nothing about Jenny. Martin turns up and says he doesn’t know where Jenny is, Alan comes back from France, and comes the hard man with Martin, who tells him that Jenny went off with a French guy.
Jack attempts to clean the chimney , gets the soot all over the his face, and then uses Vera’s new coat to clean his eyes. Bet calls Jack The little chimney sweep, and calls him Sooty, “ I knew there was something about you, you’re had a wash” says Bet.
Gas man turns up( played by the actor who was Joe the neighbour in The Royle Family) , and says the gas fire is fine after all.
Ivy says Tracey is a nice little girl, which is interesting due to her behaviour in the present.

cloudyweewee · 12/02/2018 18:44

I definitely remember Jack and Bet snogging in the dim and distant past.

Kikashi · 12/02/2018 19:16

Fancy Susan in a mini metro with a sunroof. I want to kick Ken - glad Deirdre is standing up for herself! No wonder she had an affair with Mike.

zukiecat · 12/02/2018 23:46

Hilda was such a great character, I still miss her, has Jean Alexander's death ever been mentioned on screen or is she still living happily with Dr Lowther?

I like Ivy this time round too, maybe it was after Brian died that she changed.

Tracy is so sweet, how and why did she become so hateful

cloudyweewee · 13/02/2018 06:17

All those hours listening to her tapes in her bedroom must have had a detrimental effect.

CoolCarrie · 13/02/2018 07:27

I think you are right zukiecat, it was after Brian was killed that ivy changed.

CoolCarrie · 13/02/2018 07:33

Ivy wasn’t happy when Gail married Martin either, and then Martin wanted to adopt Nicky & Sarah as it would change their names to Platt.

scrabbler3 · 13/02/2018 10:06

I vaguely remember the scene where Martin and Gail told Ivy that he was going to adopt Nicky and Sarah. Martin wasn't sensitive, I recall he said something like, "we're chuffed to mintballs". I remember Ivy being unpleasant to them, but maybe she had cause....don't know.....Looking forward to re-watching.

Was Sally Ann Matthews taking a break for some reason? I'm wondering about the Frenchman storyline.

Jean Alexander's death has not been referenced. It's a shame that Hilda has not been mentioned in the current series by any character who would recall her (Rita/Sally/Kevin/Audrey/Gail/Ken/Tracy/Jenny/Peter - there are plenty of them) given everything JA contributed to the show.

carringtonm · 13/02/2018 15:39

Ken Barlow is an unpleasant man-child. How did Deirdre put up with him?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/02/2018 15:42

Ken is vile, little woman at home

CoolCarrie · 13/02/2018 16:06

Kannet,
Jack and Vera’s kitchen needs new wallpaper, so Vera gets a book of samples, pays a tenner for the book and Jack has now torn the pieces out and put them on the wall! Vera wouldn’t get her tenner back now! She calls Jack a wally bonce! He then says we could get another sample book and have patchwork wallpaper.
Jack also thinks Percy phoned the gas board, and Percy said it wasn’t him. Then Jack thinks it was Our Brian, and Ivy says it was her who called the gas in, as she worried about an explosion.

Alan is still worried about Jenny, he wants to go back to France. Martin
tells Rita that Jenny’s boyfriend is not a beach bum type, but comes
from money. Jenny turns up and tells them that she wants to marry Patrice, and live in France.

Alec is sick with flu, so Bet calls Betty to come in and asks her to come back to work, without mentioning it to Alec.
Ken doesn’t want Deidre to go to a conference, in Bournemouth for a week, he is such an arse, Deidre is sticking to her guns, and she is going.
Brian looks like he is growing a beard at the moment

AuntTrotwood · 13/02/2018 16:28

Is it just me or did Sally echo Hilda turning Tom down in her chat with Tim in last night's episode? Talking about "everything important that's ever happened to me has happened on this street."

AuntTrotwood · 13/02/2018 16:29

Sorry i should say i'm a little bit behind in the classic episodes!

AuntTrotwood · 13/02/2018 16:31

@zukiecat i googled this and was surprised to find that Jean Alexander's death was not marked with Hilda's in the show, so I suppose Hilda is still alive as far the show goes. I think it's a shame that she didn't even get an off screen funeral.

Norfolklassie · 13/02/2018 16:58

Disappointed to come on here and see no mention of Bet and Alec’s pink boudoir! Grin

Kikashi · 13/02/2018 17:29

It was very feminine - more tasteful than expected although the pink cane headboard was a bit garish! Alec looked like a little round pudding lost in the beds mass. Alec wears quite a lot of pastels. I detested him first time round but he seems not half as bad this time - I can appreciate the actors skill.

Loved Deirdre standing up for herself with the vile Ken.

scrabbler3 · 13/02/2018 20:43

I don't recall Ken being that chauvinistic. I always thought he was liberal.

Loved the pink bedroom! It's very Bet.

And Tracy's cassettes were mentioned!

CoolCarrie · 14/02/2018 15:50

Jenny’s handsome French boyfriend has turned up, he can’t marry her until he finishes his studies and does his national service, so Jenny is very upset. Patric is going to stay at the Rovers and Alec is charging £20 for B&B.
Betty forces Bet to tell Alec that she is back, he isn’t happy and says Bet is taking advantage of a sick man, , despite the takings being up because of Betty’s hot pot
Alf tells Audrey that Deidre asked to go to the conference, she wasn’t chosen, and Audrey says Ken he should take up golf to get his own back.

CoolCarrie · 14/02/2018 16:26

Very funny exchange between Bet & Alec re “ a monstrous regiment of women taking over the pub”
Alec says “ are you all meeting at midnight, in your nighties, dancing around a caldron Of Betty’s hotpot?” Bet says Alec has yellow fever and hallucinations, and his hair will never curl, and Alec says he doesn’t want Betty back, Bet says she is staying, and will she draw him a diagram as to why, like she did on their wedding night!

Percy says “ I bet I knew Patric’s mother, I wonder if her name is Fifi”?

Iwantacampervan · 14/02/2018 17:17

I liked Percy's claim that he 'liberated Paris' - on his own?
Really like the conversations/exchanges between characters (e.g. Bet and Alec), it seems to be missing now or not as much - Eileen, Tim and Steve have had their moments.

ScarletPower · 14/02/2018 17:28

AuntTrotwood

YES!! When Sally was giving Tim the speech about how all of her memories were on the street, I was struck by how similar Hilda's speech had been.

ChevalierTialys · 14/02/2018 19:14

Ken is being an absolute DOUCHE about this councillor thing - it was his idea!

ChevalierTialys · 14/02/2018 20:28

Just read all your comments - I didbt realise Jean Alexander has died!!! Sad Sad Sad

Hilda will never come back Sad

I probably saw it in the news at the time bit it didn't mean anything to me - now it's actually devastating!
