GBBO - opinions?

What are people's opinions on the new Bake Off so far? And yes, I know we're only a few minutes in. IMO the new presenters feel a bit like they're trying a little too hard to be Mel and Sue.

Opinions?

The challenges are really hard this year. And a lot of stuff I can't imagine they've made before.
If you look at Stephen's Instagram page he makes the most amazing looking cakes which he hasn't really had a chance to show so far.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/10/2017 16:08

Stephen is annoying, but it's tempered for me by the fact that the inside of his head is clearly not a very happy place.

Hmm Confused

This confirms I've been watching a different programme from most of the rest of you.

TiramisuQueenoftheFaeries · 18/10/2017 16:11

This confirms I've been watching a different programme from most of the rest of you.

His comments in some of the "reactions to camera" bits strongly suggest to me he's massively self-critical and neurotic. The part where he was telling his mum he got star baker was painfully approval-seeking. Not unusual with that kind of perfectionist personality. So I do find him annoying, but also feel somewhat sorry for him.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 18/10/2017 16:28

I'm another who isn't sad to see Liam go, found him irritating. Although I'd much rather Stacey get the boot as at least Liam was good. Kate and Stacey are both a bit slapdash.

I'm rooting for Sophie for the win! But I don't mind Steven even if he is a little smug. I like his ideas.

bonfireheart · 18/10/2017 17:06

Wow the psychoanalysis of someone's character based on a few snippets of a edited tv programme.

5foot5 · 18/10/2017 21:23

Stephen is so funny, why doesn't anyone like him?

I like him. I don't think he is at all smug. He is quite funny and he often helps the others. I think he should win really.

TizzyDongue · 18/10/2017 21:56

Just caught up.

Not sure I can take it. Should have been kate

Liam went because he had a bad showstopper? Kate dropped her changer also had really bad one.

I demand a recount!!

BadenBadenBadenBaden · 18/10/2017 21:58

5foot5 yes I like Stephen too. He has been the most consistent so far and has produced some great showstoppers.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 18/10/2017 21:59

Whaaaaa? Just watched. I’m boycotting next week Angry Cannot bear smug Stacey. No way Kate should’ve stayed in.

Floellabumbags · 18/10/2017 23:14

There's no one left that I like now. I think they should bring back Flo as a wildcard.

AndroidsConundrum · 18/10/2017 23:53

YY on Stephen being the one to help other people. He even offered Staecy his oven! He's lovely!

Sophie is smug Grin

bibliomania · 19/10/2017 10:39

Yes, I like Stephen and I did think the drag queen joke was good (although it sounded rehearsed rather than entirely spontaneous).

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/10/2017 10:59

I don't dislike Stephen, I just haven't warmed to him for some reason. I think he was a bit smug early on but not so much now. I think all the charismatic characters have gone tbh.

I think I would change the format slightly and have a couple less bakers to start with but not start sending anyone out until week 3. That way it would give people more of a chance to show their strengths and for their personalities to emerge.

It's pot luck really if the first week is something that is your forte or your nemisis. Someone that went in week one could have been really great on everything except what was being done in week one.

ConcreteUnderpants · 19/10/2017 12:38

I too found Liam annoying and can't understand the huge love for him.
Don't think he should have gone though. It was definitely Kate's (long overdue) time to go.
My money's on Sophie to win, but not bothered as I don't particularly like anyone on this series.

gabsdot · 19/10/2017 15:17

I was shocked Kate didn't got last week. Based on this weeks show alone it was very close between Liam and Kate and him coming last in the technical probably swung it for him. However taking into account previous weeks he is better that Kate. IMO
Stacey was a pity star baker award. I don't think she' had it before.
Kate will go next week and the winner will be Sophie or Steven. I don't really care which.

gabsdot · 19/10/2017 15:18

And Liam should get a job as a kids TV presented, maybe Blue Peter (is that still on). He's lovely.

ppeatfruit · 19/10/2017 16:26

Sandi on R2 at the moment very interesting indeed about GBBO.

yawning801 · 19/10/2017 16:36

Wow - I hadn't realised how many posts my thread had got until I saw it on "Active!". I quite like Stacey actually, because she somehow survived the oven door scenario!

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 19/10/2017 17:07

There were other ovens for her, not hot though! Maybe she was given a 'sympathy' Star Baker. as you said gabshot her clangers were good. Her and Kate never have had SB.

ppeatfruit · 19/10/2017 17:09

Sorry gabsdot Got your name wrong! Halloween Blush

chipscheeseandcurrysauce · 19/10/2017 17:12

How the fuck is Stacey a semi-finalist?

She should have been out week 1-2.

ConcreteUnderpants · 19/10/2017 18:11

ppeatfrui Stacey has won SB before (I remember because she said that needless comment about Liam expecting it.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 19/10/2017 19:01

Bye bye Liam, but I am sure he will be back on our screens.
Really warm to Kate with every episode. I like Stephen and there's not much he has made in the competition I wouldn't think, yum.
Sophie's Savoy cake looked amazing.
Don't know why Stacey didn't tip a bag of H a r i b o s on hers and be done with it. She's a bit lucky to still be here, the dramas are wearisome.

InsomniacAnonymous · 19/10/2017 21:13

ppeatfruit "Sandi on R2 at the moment very interesting indeed about GBBO."

What did she say?

Floralnomad · 19/10/2017 21:18

Apparently in OK magazine it said Stacey is married to one of the founders of the firm Asos and he and his 3 coowners sold their shares in 2012 for 50million . Whether it's editing or not she has come across pretty badly some weeks , she is never seen offering to help , she stays seated whilst everybody else gets up at the end ( except when she wins) and even Noel made that comment about never knowing whether she was going to whack you with a pan . She gets absolutely slated on twitter/ social media each week after the show . So if she does win it seems a very hollow victory .
