GBBO - opinions?

What are people's opinions on the new Bake Off so far? And yes, I know we're only a few minutes in. IMO the new presenters feel a bit like they're trying a little too hard to be Mel and Sue.

Opinions?

Sophie too much of an eager to please, perfect, head girl type. Deserving winner but totally forgettable.
Would love for Liam to win and happy for Stephen to take it. I think if Liam really wows them even once in the final he'll win.

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 13/10/2017 18:29

Oh, i’m so pleased to have found this thread. I expected to hate the ch4 bake off but I’ve been proved wrong. The main programme is good. Prue is fierce though, sometimes I think she’s a bit harsh but tbh it’s good to have that firmness on a show that would otherwise be cuddly nonsense.

I was sad to see Yan go, as a personality, I really enjoyed watching her. She was brilliantly sensible, funny and self deprecating. Charming. Unlike some of the hyper competitive ones and the whiners.

The change that i’m really loving though is the new hour long Extra Slice format. The later slot gives them a good chance to move away from the twee.

bonfireheart · 13/10/2017 18:58

The guests on extra slice have been brill too!

Wellysocksbox · 13/10/2017 19:10

Please can I draw your attention to an up and coming stand up comic who was in last week's Extra Slice, Phil Wang?

Phil Wang.

I saw him in the Cambridge Footlights show and he (plus his comedy group Daphne) are top.

No, I'm not his mum!!Grin

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 13/10/2017 19:20

I have an inappropriate crush on Phil wang

Twinkie1 · 13/10/2017 19:25

The Chinese woman kept running her hands through her hair this week then touching food and Noel drinks straight out of bottles of stuff that people then use. It’s fucking rank.

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 13/10/2017 19:27
Hmm
bonfireheart · 13/10/2017 19:45

Phil Wang is great, as is Henning Wehn.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 13/10/2017 20:14

I like Henning When but he is weird . . . he looks like a foetus.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 13/10/2017 20:17

Paul looks like someone left him in the oven too long

PurplePillowCase · 13/10/2017 21:58

I hate the golden sirup advert.
makes me gag just watching it.

yesbutnobut · 13/10/2017 23:19

Duck totally agree with you - Extra Slice is so much better on Channel 4! Hour long, 10pm slot, swearing, it’s great. Yan was great and looked fab. The hair and make up work wonders on the evictees!

TheweewitchRoz · 15/10/2017 19:20

Checking in again as for some reason this has disappeared off the threads im on!

I'm really enjoying this series & loving Prue in particular.

SpecialAgentDaleCooper · 15/10/2017 19:29

We've actually been pleasantly surprised and have enjoyed it a lot! I think we were prepared to be disappointed but the contestants have helped make it. DD and I love Liam! DS really dislikes Steven and his smugness and is just waiting for him to have a major flop.

Slight hi-jack for any avid GBBO fans - does anyone know of any baking days/experiences/courses with ex-GBBO contestants please? DD is coming up to her 18th birthday and a s Bake Off and baking fan I reckon she would love it! Only one I've found is a Macarons Day with Beca. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to hijack the thread. Thanks.

bonfireheart · 15/10/2017 20:19

DD had a baking lesson from Ugne (2015 contestant) she was absolutely lovely!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/10/2017 22:18

Yan was great and looked fab. The hair and make up work wonders on the evictees!

And so does not being run ragged and sweating like a horse in an over-heated tent over a red-hot stove! Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/10/2017 22:19

DS really dislikes Steven and his smugness and is just waiting for him to have a major flop

Have to admit that I feel the same . . .

bonfireheart · 15/10/2017 23:22

After all the drama over the programme moving to channel 4, it reallt would be the icing on the cake for someone as lovely as Liam to win.
Yes Sophie and Steven are good but Liam is what the programme is about.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/10/2017 11:34

I agree about the drama - I was NEVER going to watch it again etc - I'm so glad I did. Liam is such a joy - his mam must be so proud of him. -I wish my daughter brought lads like him home instead of the tossers she seems to attract

MinesaPinot · 16/10/2017 13:50

Lots of love for GBBO in our house. Me and DH are addicted. Think the new lineup is really working well.

Thought the gulf between the top 3 and bottom 3 was very evident last week. Sophie definitely thought she'd got Star Baker from the look on her face, and have to admit to a snigger when they announced Stephen.

Liam is great, though, such a joy. Loved it when he phoned his mum when he got Star Baker and then asked her why she was crying!

Kate and Stacey have been skating on thin ice for weeks so I was surprised it wasn't one of them who went, and sad it was Yan. I think she was a great personality.

Roll on this week!

ppeatfruit · 17/10/2017 08:42

I was going to give it a chance! But I was rude about Noel and I take it back , he comes across as very sweet and relates well to the contestants. Also he sometimes takes the pee out of Paul Hollywood!

ppeatfruit · 17/10/2017 08:43

Hooray it's on tonight!!!!!! Grin Cake Biscuit !!!!!!!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 17/10/2017 08:50

Another one here who thought they'll never replace St Mary of Berry, and couldn't imagine Noel and Sandy instead of Melandsue.
But I'm really enjoying it and there is no jarring with the new presenters.

Paul is a bit annoying with his "never done this before" like he's trying to say C4 GBBO is better than BBC GBBO. But he was annoying before!

ppeatfruit · 17/10/2017 11:09

I enjoyed a whole episode of Italian baking, it's a good idea. As someone said wrongly on Extra Slice? You don't cook the topping of a pizza, Hmm it's obvious that many people have no idea how to make even a basic one!

LemonRedwood · 17/10/2017 20:08

AAAARRRRGH! I've been banished upstairs to watch on ipad while DH has a play date movie night with some friends. Programme started on ipad through Virgin Media TV anywhere (the biggest lie of an app name ever) and about 3 mins in I get a message saying it's unavailable due to rights restrictions. FFS why??? I'm in the UK, have a valid subscription and am connected to internet. Bloody Virgin crap. Nothing but trouble since we switched from Sky.
