This episode was eeeuuuurrggghhh wasn't it? Glad to see a load of my concerns addressed in the thread.

Why do they walk and walk and walk and walk and then Gendry can run it in a few hours? In unknown terrain? In the dark? In snow?

Did somebody find some unused dialogue from a school play, fuck it up a bit (literally) and give it to the lads to banter with? Haven't heard dialogue that cringeworthy and stilted since... since... the Peter Jackson bits in LOTR. Which fits, since the time and distance confusion is very Peter Jackson too - just get on your horse and go for a bit of a gallop and hey presto you're in Minas Tirith, like. Then gallop a bit and hey, Lone Mountain. Feck off with that nonsense. Fecking jet-ravens they must have.

The battle scene - thank you dead people for lumbering up one and one. Easier to survive then, thank you. That scene could only have been saved by the death of a few important characters. Like Thormund. We thought he'd die for sure because he's recording something else now (mr Bani says) but apparently he has an accomodating contract.

There is no way to survive immersion into freezing water and then a long ride in sub-zero temps. Also, no-one had hats and their ears weren't even red. I am very offended by this.

Mostly the lame dialogue pisses me off. If the actors in this series weren't so consistently good, mind, it would never have taken off. ;) The only thing that can redeem this is some serious underhand playing by Sansa and Arya or at least some good explanations - because THAT makes no sense either! I thought maybe Arya is losing herself because of the faceless training, but she seemed fine up until Ed Sheeran really so what's the deal. Did he steal her soul?

Hate to say it, but it's high time someone important dies. Kill your darlings. It feels like they're pandering to the audience now and keeping the faves. And no, the dragon didn't matter that much. It feels like in Harry Potter when they did the whole "you'll never GUESS who dies oh you'll cry so much" and I really thought they'd kill off Ron or Hermione but no. Not that poor Fred didn't deserve to not die, but lets face it, it was no RonorHermione death.

CeeBeeBee · 22/08/2017 15:50

I don't think Arya can die just yet, I just don't think it makes sense for her to go through the training of being No one in series 6, only for it to be wasted.

Arya did choose a lonely path but she returned to Winterfell and has Bran's approval to get on with her list, as shown by the gifting of the dagger.

I'm certain that Arya had meant for Sansa to find her faces and I really don't think she'll kill Sansa or vice versa. What will Sansa do with the dagger?

honeyroar · 22/08/2017 15:58

I actually think Sansa is more lone than Arya. She doesn't fully intergrate with anyone in the family, she never has. Arya would be right at home if Jon was there, and was better with Bran than Sansa was.

But there had better be a joint plot with the girls to kill Littlefinger next week, or I will be seriously sulking.

Oh - and while we're on annoying things - IF someone did manage to survive being submerged in icy water, a long horse ride back, you'd not put them to bed with no pyjamas on and no covers! You'd have them wrapped up to high heaven to get them warm!

SaucyJack · 22/08/2017 16:00

" you'd not put them to bed with no pyjamas on and no covers!"

I thought this was a plot device so that Dany could see Jon's scars and see what Davos had been talking about?

ElenaGreco123 · 22/08/2017 16:01

Puffpaw I would not dare to present any endgame for Sansa or anyone else. It is all up in the air.

A lot of book readers think that Arya dies in the last book or more precisely her body is found in the last book.

yumyumpoppycat · 22/08/2017 16:30

Isn't Jon basically dead and that's why he the water?

Elena could that theory mean she joins Nymeria's wolf pack in some form. I feel sad that all the Stark children seem to be having such unhappy endings, maybe joining a real wolf pack would be a good ending for her. We at least need Sansa to survive or that's it for the Starks? I suppose Jon is still just as much a Stark through his mother regardless of his father.

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 22/08/2017 16:31

Elena is that the theory about Jon telling her that her body would be found frozen in the spring with her needle in her fingers?

I always thought it was a bit ominous when she told Elmer (?) Frey in Harrenhal "I hope your princess dies" not realising it was herself.

About Craster.... I assumed he only gave his sons as an offering to the Others because he wanted to keep his daughters to be his wives. I don't remember any implication in the book that they were then turned into baby white walkers but I may have missed that.

banivani I get what you're saying. I sometimes feel like I'm the real downer on these threads and constantly moaning about how bad it has become. I really want to like the show as I have been invested in it for years and think some (but not all) of the actors are great. It just feels like a bad parody of itself now. It's lines like "it's gingers I hate" that just seem like a big 'up yours' to book fans.

yumyumpoppycat · 22/08/2017 16:32

sorry that's why he didn't die in the water

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 22/08/2017 16:32

We saw them turned into baby white walkers didn't we?

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 22/08/2017 16:33

They were turned into baby white walkers in the show.

yumyumpoppycat · 22/08/2017 16:35

Arya I agree about the babies - the girl babies could then go on to have more boy babies whereas if he gave both boy and girl babies the supply would run out Sad I wonder who is looking after all these baby WW's are they in some kind of crèche.

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 22/08/2017 16:40

The boy white walker babies are in Saruman style forges creating dragon-dragging chains. In their free time they are practising with their ice javelins and designing a new range of male clothing that's actually far sexier than all that stupid fur.

They are laughing at the humans who forgot hats.

yumyumpoppycat · 22/08/2017 16:43

Wow that's quite an efficient education Grin

Mner · 22/08/2017 16:57

Ignoring the many niggles in the show and being very behind with the books, it was very gripping. I was sat on the edge of the sofa, shouting at the tv and I liked how they were linking the histories of the characters (tormund and the hound, Jon and Beric). I think I'd like to watch it again to really soak in what they were saying.

DH had read re the dragon ending so we saw that coming. I was still hoping it wouldn't come true. Bloody NK!

I am amazed re the lack of a main character death. I thought jorah's time was up for sure and maybe
Tormund...

Arya is really grating on me. I think it would be poetic if Sansa killed her. Her list and subsequent anger is causing more problems than it has solved. A knitting 'needle' as a murder weapon would be perfect!

Aardfart · 22/08/2017 17:09

I love the Arya / Sansa storyline - it shows they're both flawed and untrusting and just plain don't like each other as has been the case since season one.

My criticism of this episode was the music - it just didn't seem as powerful as the other episodes and didn't add any drama to the battle scenes. And Jon bloody faffing around slaying wights when he needed to get on the damn dragon. Why didn't he just get on the dragon?! Jeez..

BlueKarou · 22/08/2017 17:33

I think I'd be a little bit devastated if Sansa killed Arya. That sort of a move would be pretty unforgivable and would pretty much recuse both of the Stark girls from any good ending - a kinslayer wouldn't be entitled to a happy ever after.

We need a Frozen moment.

notgivingin789 · 22/08/2017 17:40

AyraUnder... Craster sacrificed his baby boys to the WW because 1; He wanted his daughters to himself, if the daughters then had subsequent baby daughters... well he could easily just marry them, have babies and start over the sick process. 2; He was in fear that his sons may act against him, since his impregnating, raping their mothers !

CeeBeeBee · 22/08/2017 17:46

Given that Sansa hasn't killed anyone yet, it may be twist that were not expecting. I really hope that doesn't happen though!

McTufty · 22/08/2017 17:50

I don't think Arya can die just yet, I just don't think it makes sense for her to go through the training of being No one in series 6, only for it to be wasted

I agree. I assume we didn't sit through all that boring shit for her to die without using it.

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 22/08/2017 17:52

notgiving TBH Craster is one character that I try to erase from my mind. In a book/show series full of sickos, Craster and Ramsey are right up there competing for the prize of most horrible villain.

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 22/08/2017 17:58

I don't see Arya dying just yet, but I am not seeing a happy ending for her at he moment. She needs some serious rehab/therapy at he end of all this. Lots of fanboys on /freefolk want to see Hound/Arya road trip v2.0 in seasons 8, but I don't think that would be a good thing considering where both those characters are at the moment.

I am definitely starting to think that Sansa is likely to live. My biggest fear for her was always Cersei getting hold of her - "She'll be singing to the Stranger, begging for his kiss". That is looking less and less likely now.

badabing36 · 22/08/2017 18:06

I always thought Craster's boys were the lucky ones really.

I really hope we find out what the NK's plan is, and why he wants to kill everyone. Is it in any of the books?

Puffpaw · 22/08/2017 18:08

But there had better be a joint plot with the girls to kill Littlefinger next week, or I will be seriously sulking.
I would love nothing more than for this to happen, I hope you are right. Maybe Sansa kills LF with catspaw or whatever that dagger is called. Maybe he is the lone wolf, although not really a wolf. I do take the point about Aryas training but what I've loved about got is the fact that characters that seem important can just snuff it, although not so much in recent seasons!
I still think Arya is dead though... I'm most likely wrong!

AryaUnderfootNowPrefersSansa · 22/08/2017 18:11

Is it in any of the books?

Not really. There is a 'Night King' mentioned upthread who was the commander of the Night Fort and went off with a woman believed to be an 'Other'. There isn't really a White Walker Night King though.

The religion of R'hllor mentions a Great Other, which is the sort of great adversary to the Lord of Light and is thus the Lord of Night. In Bran's coma dream he looks deep into the Heart of Winter and what he sees there terrifies him. The reader doesn't really know what that is though.

McTufty · 22/08/2017 18:13

If either of the Stark girls die this season (and I don't think they will) it is more likely to be Sansa. I see Arya's skills as being potentially far more interesting for the storyline next season. Sansa doesn't really add a lotz

I also don't think Sansa is capable of murdering her own sister. I doubt arya is either but she is the notebook violent and ruthless of the two so more likely to be her.
