WARNING: HERE BE DRAGONS (probably) AND SPOILERS

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 5 "EASTWATCH"

Come and discuss the fifth episode in the penultimate series, airing August 14th at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid finding out what happens in Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6. Only three more episodes to go this season!!

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episodes and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones. There is a spoiler thread running here if you want to talk about production leaks and insider information as well

Annulment definitely means "like it never happened" cos that's how Tyrion described the annulment of his first marriage when he was 13 (in the books, in the show they raised it to 16 and then promptly forgot all about it).

Annulled when the marriage hasn't been consummated is very different to annulled when the marriage has produced two children, though

Yeah but anyone could say "we never bumped uglies! I want an annulment!" and apparently it's just a rubber stamp job. So if it's all terribly relaxed, I can see Rhaegar getting one despite the two kids. He could just say he'd been tricked into marriage or that the wife was promised to someone else or some old shite.

PetyrBaelish · 14/08/2017 23:24

Or "I will have you burnt alive if you don't annul my marriage"?

ElspethFlashman · 14/08/2017 23:25

Btw anyone find Tyrions outburst about his father and being a dwarf a really discordant note in the episode?

He hasn't raged about being a dwarf in years. I know the show has kind of neglected him a bit since he went East but considering there's no time left to resolve that distress, it seemed pointless to remind us of it. I mean, it's not like there's any space in the schedule for some romantic liaison that will bolster his self image.

Mustang27 · 14/08/2017 23:26

Is Cersie playing Jaime

Middleoftheroad · 14/08/2017 23:30

Thanks for all the bastard explanations Smile

I'm worried for Jorah now. Tyrion gave him the coin and Dany welcomed him warmly. Shit!

On rewatch of Eastwatch I loved Tormund's line when asking Jon about his posse
'what about the big woman?'

HereBeFuckery · 14/08/2017 23:33

Arya thank you! I remember both now... sorry!

Petyr yes, agreed - while I'm not averse to more sexy time action, I do want an intelligent plot too. Bit of a shame, but I guess inevitable.

EllaHen · 14/08/2017 23:37

I really didn't see BBQ Tarly coming. Especially as I had shouted: "Bend the knee Dickon, bend the fucking knee!"

And dreams do come true - the Hound was back in his concise, no nonsense splendour. What was it he said? "Shut the fuck up and get on with it". I think that was the sum total of his lines. Was enough for me.

Agree, the grab-a-wight is a shit storyline. Really shit. So, let's say they get one and somehow get it to Cersei. She's to extrapolate from seeing one that there's tens of thousands of the buggers is she? Not fucking lightly. Plus, she's nuts and may well prefer to have everyone die rather than just she.

Troutfin · 14/08/2017 23:45

Apologies if someone has already suggested this but I reckon if Cersei really is pregnant, then it is through Qyburn's dodgy magic. It won't be a bonny baby but some weird thing which willl crawl out and kill her. Remember the Red Witch's shadow baby?

OlennasWimple · 14/08/2017 23:51

AryaU - Rhaegar could have legitimised his children by Elia at the same time as annulling the marriage - given that his concern was to get three heirs, I think we should assume that he did.

IIRC polygamous marriage had been given up some time ago, even by the Targs, as part of their deal for support from the High Septon, so that wasn't an option for Rhaegar at that time, even if Lyanna would have consented to it

It's the bloody Ateam talk about a 'rag tag crew'
I was thinking why doesn't Jon catch a wight to prove their existence last week then thought Nah that's stupid.

Holyshmoly I hope it is Gilly that reveals all - Sam was dismissing her like she was reading heat magazine gossip to him.

HaveToBeSure · 15/08/2017 00:16

My main quibble is why the fuck did Kevin Eldon have a second part? He was one of the acting troupe in the last series (the one who played Ned - quite brilliantly imho) and he was one of the Lannister soldiers Gendry brained. I was wildly theorising about whether he was a Lannister soldier who ran off to be an actor, got disenchanted and came back, or if the soldier was supposed to be the brother of the actor (who were very flattering towards the Lannisters iirc), thus showing a connection between KL and the actors. It was around this time that dh gave me one of those looks...

OlennasWimple · 15/08/2017 00:17

Just did some googling - Qyburn was stripped of his maester's chain because he is a seriously creepy dude

OP posts:
yumyumpoppycat · 15/08/2017 00:17

Havetobe - yes I recognised him too (but didn't know who the actor was) he is quite distinctive looking too so it is a strange thing to do.

yumyumpoppycat · 15/08/2017 00:21

I don't think Qyburn has made Cersei pregnant (ahem) but I think it could be like in series 1 where Khal Drogo gets ill and Dany used black magic to cure him, so cersei will have complications and either cerise or Jamie will get Qyburn to do some fucked up medicine.

AryaUnderfoot · 15/08/2017 06:41

Qyburn was with the Brave Companions at one stage wasn't he?

They were a nasty bunch. Vargo Hoat deserved his bad end.

EsmesBees · 15/08/2017 07:03

I enjoyed that episode but it felt a bit rushed to me. The reunion of the Lannister brothers felt particularly brief. Plus, characters aren't half able to move around quickly these days. Seems you just have to wish yourself somewhere and it happens.

That bit when Tyrion came down the path and bumped in to the two guards stretched credulity for me. Surely they'd have thought about the possibility of him being easily recognised, he's notorious.

Doobigetta · 15/08/2017 07:16

Would everyone stop posting fucking leaks? They're still spoilers, however cleverly you think you're disguising them, and they still fucking ruin it for those of us who actually want to enjoy watching it.

BrawneLamia · 15/08/2017 07:16

Singing in for this thread. I enjoyed the episode although there were lots of unbelievable bits.

Dany has properly gone bad, hasn't she?

Jon snow has gets hotter every week

Oblomov17 · 15/08/2017 07:50

Glad I read this thread because I missed what LF scroll said about Sansa.

Is it a definite that Jon and Daenerys won't get together? Or, who will Jon get with? Who is he supposed to be with.

He can't die, on a mission to get just one, to prove to Cersei(which won't work - this plot is ridiculous, like a pp said) without producing a child? Or more importantly having sex with someone. Only because he's so damn sexy, particularly in this last episode?

ImListening · 15/08/2017 07:54

This episode wasn't my favourite but I think the last two were so good that there was bound to be a lull.

Getting really fed up with Dany now. Shame about Dickon.

Cersei 'never betray me again' scary!

Trills · 15/08/2017 07:54

Can we please stop talking about what the leaks do or do not say?

There's a separate thread for that.

"X does not happen" counts.

gincamelbak · 15/08/2017 07:55

That felt like a slightly nothing episode. But will probably be one where important things are started.

I loved Tormund asking for Brienne though.

Trills · 15/08/2017 07:58

We were discussing Cersei's age last week or the week before and it's perfectly plausible that she's pregnant naturally.

It just seems unlikely within the plot that there's nothing dodgier going on.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2017 08:01

I agree about the leaks. Please keep them off this thread.

Re Arya and the faces - she doesn't have a source at Winterfell at the moment. They had a huge repository of faces in the House of Black and White and at the Twins she took Walder Frey's face after she killed him. I suppose she could have been squirrelling a few away on her travels. That's presumably what Jaqen did.

christmasunicorn · 15/08/2017 08:06

Sam can become Lord Tarly. Once the NK and WW are defeated there'll be no need for a wall and the nights guard. After all Jon took the black too and look at him
