WARNING: HERE BE DRAGONS (probably) AND SPOILERS

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 5 "EASTWATCH"

Come and discuss the fifth episode in the penultimate series, airing August 14th at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid finding out what happens in Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6. Only three more episodes to go this season!!

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episodes and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones. There is a spoiler thread running here if you want to talk about production leaks and insider information as well

Someone posted a leak about tormund and brienne. This is a leak free thread please. I didn't notice any more but if there were - please don't

AdalindSchade · 15/08/2017 08:11

Is it a definite that Jon and Daenerys won't get together? Or, who will Jon get with? Who is he supposed to be with

This shouldn't be answered on this thread. There is a leaks and spoilers thread

AryaUnderfoot · 15/08/2017 08:13

The leak about Tormund and Brienne was not a leak. It was a cast/production interview in mainstream media prior to season launch.

ImListening · 15/08/2017 08:19

I want Jaime & Brienne to end up together but I don't think I'll get my wish. However it seemed that maybe Jaime is getting a bit fed up with Cersei in this last episode.

Middleoftheroad · 15/08/2017 08:24

While Cersei's preggers she still has a hold over him, but I would like to see Jaimbrie as a couple. Some of my favourite scenes are of those two in s3? and her unrequited love for Renly.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 15/08/2017 08:36

I think Quyburn definitely has something to do with this pregnancy- but it might just be that he is the Keeper of the Royal Peesticks and has confirmed it.

Mustang27 · 15/08/2017 08:39

Oh man but Brienne and Tormund are hot!!!

It broke my heart to see Jaime's joy when Cersie said she would be honest of who the father is. She is totally playing him. She knows she could lose him to Tyrion. I love when the brothers are together it reminds you that Jaime has humanity.

Mustang27 · 15/08/2017 08:40

Haha keeper of the royal peesticks

BeyondQueenOfLists · 15/08/2017 09:20

Re Tyrion and "I mean, it's not like there's any space in the schedule for some romantic liaison that will bolster his self image."
I'm still putting money on him and Sansa ending up together.

SenatorBunghole · 15/08/2017 09:31

I think that's more likely HereBe! I feel like this season all of the 'clever' characters who were one step ahead and made the GOT world politically exciting are being dropped to make way for the young and sexy ones/cool CGI.

Mmm sort of. I don't really agree about Olenna, that was the best death ever and completely fitting for her character, she went out in the exact same, glorious way she lived. I'd say the jury's still out on Varys, there's time for him to redeem himself, but they've mangled Littlefinger. It's soooo obvious he's hanging around at Winterfell as a device to give Arya time to have a pop at him. Though saying that, it was even more annoying when they pointlessly and without explanation had him leave Winterfell for a while to give Sansa time to be abused by Ramsay.

Agree Cersei's pregnancy could well be normal and legit. I'm not sure how old she's meant to be but can't be any more than early 40s. It's totally plausible she might conceive at that age having had at least four term pregnancies already.

Also does anyone else have a feeling Tyrion's not going to make it? I reckon right at the end.

christmasunicorn · 15/08/2017 10:38

Spoilers don't really bother me in the sense that I had read all the books before I watched the shows so already knew what would happen (well until they went separate ways)
I definitely agree that the characters are missing something now they've over taken the books. LF, Varys and Tyrion and no longer the wise characters they were in series 1-5. They all seems a bit lost.

Do not like what they have done to the citendel and the maesters. Them saying they didn't believe Bran - surely they have come across wargs and the NK and WW before in all those books and they believe what the maesters before them wrote.

The more I think about how the scriptwriters are just dumbing everyone down they more annoyed I get. It's still a great show and I still love it but they don't have the talent that GRRM does. They make a pretty productions, he makes a great story. He really need to write quicker and get the winds of winter published

BeyondQueenOfLists · 15/08/2017 10:56

Shh, don't moan that he isn't writing fast enough - he'll find us!! Grin

Re: bastards. The sovereign can legitimise bastards. Ramsay was legitimised by Joffrey and Jon was legitimised by Robb. Jon can legitimise little Sam and Gendry.
However in times of upheaval it has no consequences. E.g. during the conquest Aemon's best and only friend and fiercest commander was Orys. Who was almost certainly a bastard Targ and Aemon's half-brother. After the war he married the heir to Storm's End and took the name Orys Baratheon.

Re: annulment. It was properly cocked up on the show. Only the High Septon can annul the marriage. It means the children are disinherited. Rhaegar could not do it Dorne for 2 political reasons:

  1. Aerys needed the 10,000 Dornish spears led by Lewyn Martell. Their loyalty was ensured by keeping Elia and her kids hostage in Kings Landing.
  2. Rhaegar was hoping to depose Aerys. There is no way he could do it without Dorne. Rhaegar's best friend, Arthur Dwayne, was Dornish.

Similarly Sansa is still married to Tyrion in the books, because no-one bothered to annul it.
Again in times of upheaval, people may make exceptions. But there is no such thing as we did not do the deed, so we are not married.

Mustang27 · 15/08/2017 11:28

Maybe I missed it but nobody said really wether they think Arya knows LF was watching her. I think she did and it's a way to catch him out if he thinks his plan is working. What does everyone else think?

OlennasWimple · 15/08/2017 11:45

Elena - but in the books Sansa is twiddling her thumbs in the Eyrie, so has had no need for anyone to petition for an annulment. I think the show has really glossed over the logistics of it all, though (would the High Sparrow really grant Tyrion and Sansa an annulment while the two of them were on the run for regicide, and without using it for political gain with the Lannisters?). And, as you say, Dorne has such military importance that it couldn't be put aside as easily as a frail wife

OP posts:
ElenaGreco123 · 15/08/2017 11:55

You are right Olenna until Harry the Heir or whatshisname marries her, it does not matter if Sansa is divorced or not.

DesertIslandPenguin · 15/08/2017 11:55

I thoroughly enjoyed last night. We were away for the last two episodes so had a GoT marathon on Friday night when we got back, which has meant we've had a very Westeros style couple of days. Fab!

I had completely forgotten that Davos knew Gendry, but as soon as I saw smiths and hammers I knew that's who he'd gone to find. I guess if you're a King's bastard living in fear of your life, you'd keep a bug-out bag handy...

3EyedRaven · 15/08/2017 12:24

I just had a though.
The prince who was promised is a Valyrian prophecy, isn't it?
So therefore, would Daenerys 'Valyrian is my mother tongue' Targaryen be aware of it?
Or even if she didn't know of the prophecy, as she was exiled and got her only information from Viserys, surely she knows enough of the language, her mother tongue to know what nouns are genderless, making that whole scene either Missandei even odder. She does not need Missandei to translate Valyrian to her FFS.
Very odd.
And as a PP said, 'holy annulment batman'
The logistics of the annulment don't bother me to be honest, I'm sure it will be more thoroughly thought out in the book. All that matters is we know Jon is legitimate, the rightful heir to the throne, and Dany can STFU and 'bend the fucking knee' to him.
Even if she tries her 'Dracarys' bullshit, blatantly Drogon won't do it as he knows who Jon is.

ElenaGreco123 · 15/08/2017 12:40

So Dickon is now gone? The Tarlys will have more significant role in the book. I mean Sam is second cousin to Shireen Baratheon and Edric Storm, first cousin to Mace Tyrell's wife - so all the Tyrell children are related to him. The Tarlys will obviously take over the Reach after the Long Night.

christmasunicorn · 15/08/2017 12:40

think she did and it's a way to catch him out if he thinks his plan is working. What does everyone else think?

In the books I would agree. Whilst she was in Braavos, I would agree. Now in the dumbed-down version of westeros where everyone seems to have forgotten who they are, I'm not so sure. Surely she would have taken all those faces on her journey home and been more subtle. I know I was watching and wondering why she was picking the lock and not going through the window or something.

HaveToBeSure · 15/08/2017 13:07

I totally misread that as Ed Shireen!

SheStoodInTheStorm · 15/08/2017 13:09

you are all so knowledgeable!!

What is a Valanqour? (I don't think I've spelt that right!)
Why is David talking about rowing significant/fan service?

I enjoy the show but feel I miss a lot!!

3EyedRaven · 15/08/2017 13:17

SheStood The Valanqar was part of the prophecy that Maggy the Frog gave Cersei in the books, but I believe was left off the show.
The old woman was not done with her, however. "Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds," she said. "And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you

Valonqar means 'little brother' in high Valyrian.
Some have theorised that, as the 'prince that was promised' can actually be translated as prince or princess, and that noun has no gender in high Valyrian, perhaps the same is true for this word, or ind Ed the whole language, so it could mean little brother or little sister.
(I don't buy into this theory though, as it's clearly stated 'the valonqar shall wrap his hands', and his is definitely not gender neutral. Who knows though)

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 15/08/2017 13:18

Gendry was sent off by Davos in a rowing boat to rescue him from religious sacrifice 4 series ago on the show and not seen since. It was a longstanding Internet fan joke that he was still rowing, has circumnavigated the entire globe and has arms the size of whales. It was funny, but not a remotely realistic thing for Davos to say in character (unlike less/fewer, which was both hilarious and believable).
