WARNING: HERE BE DRAGONS (probably) AND SPOILERS

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 5 "EASTWATCH"

Come and discuss the fifth episode in the penultimate series, airing August 14th at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid finding out what happens in Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6. Only three more episodes to go this season!!

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episodes and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones. There is a spoiler thread running here if you want to talk about production leaks and insider information as well

Dragonstone to KL as a quick journey is plausible (wondering where Eurons fleet is atm though - I'd guess it would be there or did they go somewhere and I forgot?), it's only down the channel a little.

Maybe less so to get up to eastwatch - that's quite far (though at least on the right side of the continent - in comparison to casterlly rock!

BlueeSpottyTiger · 15/08/2017 20:09

Sorry to be dumb..What was actually said on the scroll that Arya found? I couldn't make it out!

AryaUnderfoot · 15/08/2017 20:21

"Robb, I write to you with a heavy heart. Our good king Robert is dead, killed from wounds he took in a boar hunt. Father has been charged with treason. He conspired with Robert’s brothers against my beloved Joffrey and tried to steal his throne. The Lannisters are treating me very well and provide me with every comfort. I beg you: come to King’s Landing, swear fealty to King Joffrey and prevent any strife between the great houses of Lannister and Stark."

Taken from Business Insider article.

AryaUnderfoot · 15/08/2017 20:23

I can't remember exactly how it played out in the show, but in the books Sansa was lead to believe that if she wrote these letters then Joffrey would be merciful and send Ned to the Wall.

RebeccaWrongDaily · 15/08/2017 20:57

here's my twopennorth.

I don't think Oleanna is dead - I don't know where she i, but nobody saw her die did they?

If JS is son of Raegar and Lyanna does that make him heir to both thrones?

Trills · 15/08/2017 21:00

Tormund and Brienne are not hot because Brienne is not interested in him.
One person being interested and the other not being into it is not hot.
It's nice that he appreciates her but she doesn't have immediately fall in love with him out of gratitude.

MargotLovedTom1 · 15/08/2017 21:15

Jorah Mormont is veering into obsessive stalker territory for me now, and I absolutely loved him at one time. I think because Iain Glen is looking much older more grizzled in these latter series, so the huge age difference between Jorah and Danaerys makes it a bit too creepy to even contemplate any sex shenanigans.

And Dany is pissing me off with her incinerating behaviour. Cersei is no better. Jon Snow all the way!

OlennasWimple · 15/08/2017 21:16

Rebecca - Olenna is definitely dead because

  1. Dickon found her dead body, and hadn't expected dead bodies to smell so bad (conversation with Bronn about Fancy Lad School in S7E4)

  2. Her story line is over, particularly with the deaths of the Tarlys.

  3. Dany needs to suffer some serious setbacks, otherwise it's just too straightforward for her to turn up and conquer Westeros

Margot - I found the book leching from Jorah awful - there's a scene in Qarth where Dany wears a traditional dress which leaves her left breast uncovered. Jorah ogles her. Dany is 14 or 15 at the time

Then there's the bit where Dany asks Jorah what his first wife looked like and he says 'a bit like you'.

Then there's the bit where Tyrion finds him in a brothel in Volantis with t a silver-haired whore....

Yeah....gone right off him Grin. I've not read the books, but in S1 he seemed gallant and protective, rather than lechy. Then Viserys said "I've seen how you look at her," and I thought Uh-oh, here we go. Obviously Tyrion's gone all googly-eyed over her as well.

Mustang27 · 15/08/2017 22:11

Sorry @trills I didn't mean they were hot for each other, I meant I fancy the pants off of both of them lol.

I know Brienne doesn't really subscribe.

Mustang27 · 15/08/2017 22:14

That's normally a wee short of her looking utterly disgusted at his leching. I also completely agree Jorah is tragic and it's gone from respect for Danys strengths to just a bit too love sick puppy for my liking

HolyShmoly · 15/08/2017 22:27

I've thought of a couple other things while reading this.
no matter how clear-headed and competent a person is, they seem to regress quite substantially when they're with their family - specifically siblings.
This is so true. We're all guilty of it and I think that's definitely where Tyrion was coming from. Tywin's hatred of him is still such a raw wound and more than anything he doesn't want his beloved big brother to feel that way about him. The Starks have the added complication of moving from being innocent children with all their petty gripes to being adults hardened well beyond their years with the fates of the kingdom and the world in their hands.

Her silver was trotting through the grass, to a darkling stream beneath a sea of stars. A corpse stood at the prow of a ship, eyes bright in his dead face, grey lips smiling sadly. A blue flower grew from a chink in a wall of ice, and filled the air with sweetness… mother of dragons, bride of fire

I thought the second man would be greyscaled Jorah? I know he has 'recovered' but the bright eyes in a dead (grey) face would fit. In which case it may not be her lovers, but significant roles at turning points in her life. I was going to suppose it was people who gave her power, but I forgot that it wasn't him that gave her the eggs.

Aren't we meant to be seeing Old Town as a bit of a fallacy? The Maester's are full of their own self importance. They may be clever but not wise.

The wheel must be broken, the Faith is corrupt and now crushed, the Maesters can't see the scrolls for the raven shit and the wall is about to come crumbling down. Winter is coming.

Puffpaw · 15/08/2017 22:35

Another thing occurred to me, Dany seemed very impressed when Jon was stroking drogon, but Tyrion actually released two of her dragons a couple of seasons ago, and they also let him stroke them. Does Dany realise this? We think Jon can stroke the dragons because he has targ blood; why did the dragons not just roast Tyrion when he went to their cave after Dany locked them up for eating too many goats or something?
Also what are the dragons eating now? They are huge, if they are just wiping out farmers cattle and Dany is in no position to compensate them it won't win her many supporters.

Puffpaw · 15/08/2017 22:37

I agree the second man is grayscale Norah.
I don't think the dragons are fire zombies though, they were born of fire, from eggs, not reanimated with fire.
It does beg the question could the skeletons in kings landing be reanimated in some way?

Puffpaw · 15/08/2017 22:37

Jorah not Norah

honeyroar · 15/08/2017 22:41

Can anyone remember who gave Danerys the dragon eggs?

I don't think Tiryon fancies Dany, I think he's going right off her at the moment.

yumyumpoppycat · 15/08/2017 22:42

Could the corpse on a boat be Theon - he looks practically like a corpse now anyway?

Maester Broadbent - maybe he is a charlatan Maester and really knows fuck all, but got the job through connections or something?

MargotLovedTom1 · 15/08/2017 22:45

I don't think (from what I've read on these threads) Jorah has greyscale in the books; that story belongs to someone called Jon Connington.

Yes, Tyrion's crush has probably abated somewhat right now!

MargotLovedTom1 · 15/08/2017 22:52

I've just rewatched the bit of first episode with the eggs and it was Magister (played by Roger Allam) who gives them to her.

yumyumpoppycat · 15/08/2017 22:53

I don't think Tyrion loves Dany either - at least on show version my memory is hazy of book version. Anyone else think Tyrion has become a bit too sober - I guess he just craved respect and now all his vices have disappeared?

MargotLovedTom1 · 15/08/2017 22:55

Sorry, Illyrio Merchant (she calls him Magister).

Middleoftheroad · 15/08/2017 22:57

could the skeletons in kings landing be reanimated in some way?

Puffpaw Now that's the stuff dreams are made of. Please let it happen Halo
