Thinking aloud... Looking at the HOTU visions, I'm not concinced by the explanations for the third fire to light (to love), third mount to ride (to love) and third treason (for love). Each that I am reading shoehorns in something that has already happened in the books, but now knowing that the third mount to ride seems to be jon, it makes me wonder about the other two being something to do with him too. This also potentially mishmashes in the ptwp/nn prophecy.

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 31/08/2017 14:09

And reading General dreams and prophecies... jaime's second dream makes it look very much like him and Cersei are not Tywin's ("Will you forget your own lord father too? I wonder if you ever knew him, truly" and "We all dream of things we cannot have. Tywin dreamed that his son would be a great knight, that his daughter would be a queen" ... "“I am a knight,’ he told her, “and Cersei is a queen.” A tear rolled down her cheek.")

Also first dream makes me wonder if he is dying courtesy of a greyjoy ("Beware the water, he told himself. There may be creatures living in it, hidden deeps...")

Another thought - AA "born again amidst salt and smoke" - no one seems to think that these could be people who are there: salt = a greyjoy

BeyondLimits Jaime's dreams - particularly the one with Brienne under CR - are very intriguing. I always thought the tear rolling down Joanna's cheek was more to do with her knowledge of the incest between Jaime and Cersei though. However, just the fact that Jaime has green dreams could indicate some Targ connection - like Baelor, John the Fiddler and Bloodraven.

The significance of the Greyjoys and their connection with the Drowned God, the Others and magic is really fascinating and I'm sure it's going to feature heavily in Winds. Of all the 'visionaries' in the books the one that's least clear is probably Patchface.

Sorry what does HOTU and CR stand for? I'm new to reading online about the books and show? Other than awoiaf and grrm.com where do people read about theories/discussions?

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 31/08/2017 15:48

House of the undying and Casterly rock :)
Reddit is overflowing with theories, plus general googling!

AryaUnderfoot · 31/08/2017 16:13

Poppy

Westeros.org is seriously addictive to read. The book forums have some real book experts but don't post ANYTHING show related. Show forums and reviews are interesting.

asoiaf.westeros.org

To 'quick reference' stuff from the books I use this link - it's great! Even GRRM has confessed to using it.

Hope the link works. Best thing about the Wight hunt was the Brotherhood without Banjos!

Sorry, just catching up.

Which one was the "Forsaken" chapter in Winds? Oh, the Damphair. I can't retain anything to do with him in my memory...

Has anyone else had a feeling that Sandor will give the gift to his brother? He seemed very sad about him. More sad than angry after seeing the state of him...

AryaUnderfoot · 04/09/2017 19:49

Elena I hope that any Cleganebowl is shown more as a mercy killing than anything else. It would fit with his storyline of redemption.

Unfortunately, the Arya and the Freys storyline (not to mention Sansa/Ramsey) seems to be glorifying vengeance. It's the opposite in the books. I don't have much hope in D&D at the moment to do the storyline properly, but I would love to be proved wrong.

Juliecloud · 14/09/2017 19:55

Has anyone read this theory on digital spy?

www.digitalspy.com/tv/game-of-thrones/feature/a838062/game-of-thrones-jon-snow-daenerys-targaryen-relationship/

What do people who have read the books think?

AryaUnderfoot · 16/09/2017 19:55

@JulieCloud, this has been a popular theory kicking around the book community for years. In particular, Preston Jacobs has done lots of theory videos on it on YouTube. The main 'inconsistencies' in Dany's memory are:

  • She supposedly grew up in Braavos in a house with a red door and a lemon tree. There are multiple references in the books to the fact that Braavos is too far north for lemons to grow and that they have to be imported.
  • Her memories of Willem Darry (who protected her following their flight from Westeros) are not consistent with his supposed wasting sickness nor his being a master-at-arms.
  • Ned Stark seems 'unusually' interested in her welfare.

To me, none of this is really compelling evidence for R+L=D. However, I do buy into the idea that bloodlines and birthright inheritance to the throne are a distraction from the entire purpose of the story which is to show that the entire feudal system is unfair and destined to be overthrown. Personally, I think neither Jon nor Dany will 'sit' the Iron Throne at the end of the series - if such an object even exists any more.

Does anyone want to talk about sightings and spoilers for s8?
