SPOILERS ALERT

THIS THREAD IS FOR DISCUSSION OF SEASON 7, EPISODE 1 "DRAGONSTONE"

Come and discuss the eagerly awaited Season 7 opening episode airing July 17th at 2am UK time! Don't read the thread if you want to avoid spoilers from Season 7 but also Seasons 1-6

HBO description of the episode: Jon (Kit Harington) organizes the defense of the North. Cersei (Lena Headey) tries to even the odds. Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) comes home

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8 but speculate away on what we have learnt from the new episode and what it might mean for the rest of the Season and the ultimate winner(s) of the Game of Thrones Smile

I collect GoT memes :)

HaveToBeSure Priceless!

A few people mentioned that Jon and Sansa have some chemistry going on. Apparently they're a couple IRL and have just bought a Tudor mansion together.

The Ed Sheeran scene was terrible. It felt like they'd let him write it, the dialogue was that bad!

Communication and transport continue to baffle me. Ravens seem to be zooming around Westeros as quickly as Varys can get to Dorne and back.

And I would be unsurprised if Jaime ended up killing Cersi and retiring to Casterly Rock with Brienne. Fingers crossed that those two meet up again, she was very good for him. I want to see that even more than the (long-hoped for) Clegane Bowl!!

HaveToBeSure · 20/07/2017 18:50

Nah, Jon and Ygritte are the irl couple

AryaUnderfoot · 20/07/2017 18:52

I thought Kit Harrington was 'with' Rose Leslie (who played Ygritte).

Still not seeing any chemistry between him and Sansa/Sophie.

DesertIslandPenguin · 20/07/2017 18:57

Whoops, got my actors mixed up!

I'm afraid I was too busy being annoyed by Sansa to spot any chemistry.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 20/07/2017 18:57

Sophiw Turner is with a Jonas brother I think?

ElenaGreco123 · 20/07/2017 20:02

If the HBO photos and trailers released are true, there won't be anything left of Casterly Rock to retire to after the battle. Which makes sense, as Tyrion always planned to go for his inheritance.

AryaUnderfoot · 20/07/2017 20:06

The clip in the trailer seems to suggest that the Unsullied will get into Castery Rock via a cave. The theory for years has been that Tyrion will lead some kind of raid of Casterly Rock based on knowledge gained during his time as steward of the sewers.

AryaUnderfoot · 20/07/2017 20:08

Love this!

You are right.

OrangeFluff · 20/07/2017 23:52

Theory of why Dragonstone was empty:

Cersei and Jamie were talking about how they have no money and are in debt, and don't have much food (no more alliance with the Tyrells) so I doubt they have the resources to send an army there.

Stannis said he felt like Robert had banished him to Dragonstone. It's just baron rocks and nothing much grows there. Did anybody actually want to take the castle over and defend it?

WeDoNotSow · 21/07/2017 07:34

Reading this, and I was almost certain that my bus announced it was a service to dragonstone. 😂 (It obviously isn't, it's going to Leytonstone).

ElenaGreco123 · 21/07/2017 08:23
Grin

It was easier like this in the show, to have Dragonstone empty. In the books Stannis has left Dragonstone defended. Loras lays siege to it (Cersei would only let the Redwyne fleet defend the Reach from.the marauding Ironborn after Dragonstone has fallen) and is currently dying of his wounds there. Or some people think Loras is in fact fine seeking alliance with a Targaryen. Based on the show it would be Dany.
Aurane Waters also seem to be missing after taking Cersei's fleet with him. Aurane would be the perfect husband for Dany, he is much more Valyrian than anyone else apart from Dany and (f)Aegon.

AryaUnderfoot · 21/07/2017 08:36

To me, Dragonstone being empty is not that much of a 'stretch' of the imagination. There has long been a theory in the book forums that Loras Tyrell arrived at an empty Dragonstone and that his being horribly burned by its defenders is some sort of Tyrell ruse. Not sure I buy into this but it's plausible.

Two things bothered me:

How could Dany's fleet not bump into any of Euron's fleet on the way to Shipbreaker Bay. For Euron to have brought his entire fleet all the way into King's Landing would make no sense whatsoever.

Westeros climate change bothers me. Arya met the red cloaks in the Riverslands (somewhere between the Twins and Lannisport). Weather looked decidedly autumnal. There are rabbits to catch etc.

The Hound and the BWB went to the farmer's cottage which is near Fairmarket - in the Riverlands. It looked like it had been arctic weather for long enough that the farmer and his daughter staved to death.

The show makers will probably argue (like Varys' teleportation) that they occurred in different time periods but it still makes little sense.

I suppose the average casual viewer only interested in tits and dragons wouldn't notice. It's only book geeks like me who get bothered by these inconsistencies.

AryaUnderfoot · 21/07/2017 08:56

Cross-posted with Elena!

I've always wondered what part Aurane Waters would play in the next book. He gets very little mention in most book discussions.

rollonthesummer · 21/07/2017 10:22

Did Loras not die in the sept in the book then?

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 21/07/2017 10:31

Nobody has yet died in the Sept in the books. All those characters are still alive with one exception.

AWendyAteMyFitbit · 21/07/2017 20:26

I think I must be easily pleased or not discerning at all because I just rewatched and I bloody love all of it.

It's been a while since I read the books tbf.

ElenaGreco123 · 21/07/2017 22:32

rollon Not only is Loras alive in the books, he has long been in the Kingsguard. That is why he led the attack in Dragonstone. Still mourning Renly. The show has long forgotten it all.

ElenaGreco123 · 21/07/2017 22:34

New trailer for Comic Con

I can't believe Jaime and Cersei are still together. So disappointing.

ElspethFlashman · 22/07/2017 07:25

Definitely looks like Euron fucks up Dorne.

AryaUnderfoot · 22/07/2017 08:03

Show Dorne has been pretty much beyond redemption since season 5 and serves no narrative purpose for the story whatsoever (other than the odd gratuitous nude scene). Euron will do for the remaining Sands what Ellaria did for Doran Bashir.

I can't believe Jaime is still with Cersei either. It is truly turning into the Larry and Cheryl parody.

Now we just need Tyrion to tell that joke about the jackass and the honeycomb and the Hound to talk about chicken and the journey will be complete.

AryaUnderfoot · 22/07/2017 08:08

What amuses me is that several pages of script were leaked on Reddit earlier this year. They were universally dismissed by the vast majority because the dialogue was considered so bad.

Turns out it was genuine - one of the pages was the whole 'leave one wolf alive and the sheep are never safe' speech. If all the pages are genuine and not some 'strategic release' by HBO to fool everybody, then some of the dialogue between Dany and Jon is going to sound really cringeworthy.

SafetyBird · 22/07/2017 09:00

Please avoid discussing leaks and production details for Seasons 7 and 8

Sorry AryaUnderfoot but your previous post has really annoyed me. I am not interested in leaked spoilers AT ALL and now you've basically let it be known that Jon and Dany meet up this series, which I didn't know and didn't want to know until I saw it on the show.

I'll be hiding the thread now which is a shame.
