Anyone else watching tonight?

(Ireland apparently gets Wednesday episodes instead.
No spoilers, please!).

oh just up my street! never seen this advertised but will def be watching! thanks

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 25/05/2017 20:39

We'll compare notes later, ilove!

I'm surprised by the lack of BBC publicity, too. Entirely by chance that I came across it.

(Maybe they learnt their lesson about not overhyping, after "The Replacement"?
Must admit I read "Paula" and "dark suspense", "chilling" etc., and suddenly thought MNers' complaints about unanswered plot holes with that show, and our plea for a far better ending, had been taken on board!).

Psychological dramas are so popular.

Ooh thanks for this, haven't seen it advertised at all so would have missed it.

Smellbellina · 25/05/2017 21:21

Just watching, loving it so far. Hooked!

liquidrevolution · 25/05/2017 21:31

That girls face made me shriek!

Its good. Plus lots of good irish actors in it.

DustyMaiden · 25/05/2017 21:33

Thanks for the tip, I shall watch

Smellbellina · 25/05/2017 21:55

Had to miss the end for a crying, would like to say baby but truth is toddler. Grrr

DereksGotATail · 25/05/2017 22:25

Quite liked this but I've got no idea what's happening with the white van man (forgotten his name Blush). Looking forward to nexr week.

cushioncovers · 25/05/2017 22:46

Am watching it now but completely confused with the white van man and his two women

Clawdy · 25/05/2017 22:50

Yes, the family situation is really puzzling. It was a gripping first episode though.

SirVixofVixHall · 25/05/2017 22:53

All v confusing, and then got to the bit about ten minutes before the end, and I just couldn't watch any more.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 25/05/2017 23:05

Well, that was...er...different!

Thoughts:

  • Denise Gough's really good. Very real. Excellent eye-rolling skills.
She reminds me of Elizabeth Moss (sidenote: Top Of The Lake returns in July...yay.). Perhaps with some Ann-Marie Duff combined?
  • Intrigued to know what James's back story is: 2 mothers of his DC unhappily living together.

He's obviously violent.

My money's on the younger woman (Morgan, I think?), with the youngest child, being of central relevance based on nothing as yet but I'll cobble together a theory soon

  • WTF, oh scary horror film girl with your sewn-up mouth? Shock

cushioncovers · 25/05/2017 23:13

Well that was weird!

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 25/05/2017 23:14

^ ahem, EliSabeth Moss.

Smellbellina · 25/05/2017 23:15

I found it interesting how the mother of the younger child appeared to be girlfriend number 1

Smellbellina · 25/05/2017 23:17

WTF, oh scary horror film girl with your sewn-up mouth? shock
Whaaaat?? I missed that bit!

Clawdy · 25/05/2017 23:26

Intriguing that he wanted the old photo. And there's obviously some childhood trauma in his past......that spooky child...

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 25/05/2017 23:27

Wish I had!

Was in James's van drive home, after he'd slept with Paula. Caused him to hit a parked car.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 25/05/2017 23:31

I'm assuming it's his mother he's visiting in the nursing home, but was that made clear?

OP posts:
cushioncovers · 25/05/2017 23:34

Yes he referred to her as mum

youngestisapsycho · 26/05/2017 09:54

I loved it! Very strange set up with James though....

HalfShellHero · 26/05/2017 10:17

Just watching this now im assuming brother is an alchoholic.

SoupDragon · 26/05/2017 11:25

It'll be interesting how this pans out.

The hallucination of the girl in the van made me jump too!

I'm finding it hard to work out the set up in James's family. Did he beat one of them up at one point?

SirVixofVixHall · 26/05/2017 11:47

Uggh, it was so violent. I may try and finish the episode tonight, but the bludgeoning was too horrible, i gave up at that point. It is really frightening.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 26/05/2017 15:22

SoupDragon,

Yes, after Landlord visit, we heard (not saw) him beat up the DMof2kids, kicking a hole in the door behind which DMof1kid was cowering with her DD.

Very distressing scene.
(TBH, I was worrying about how they film those type of scenes without traumatising the child actors). Sad

I, too, am completely confused about the family set-up there!
Initially suspected some sort of abduction scenario: that the younger woman had been enslaved/ abused by James (& elder woman?), and her baby the result.

But, as Smellbellina rightly pointed out, it seems like DCs no1 & no3 are elder woman's, and only DC no2 (the toddler) is hers.

She left at one point, didn't she, until James 'white vanned' her and brought her back. (Think she was off to her Mother's?).

So perhaps she was a fling who got pregnant, then for some bizarre reason allowed by elder woman to live with them (unpaid au pair/ household skivvy as 'punishment'?.
Think the 2 youngest kids are too close in age to make a surrogacy situation feasible?)

DC no3, the baby boy, must be either a genuine attempt by James at repairing the relationship with DW/DG

or

the twist is that younger woman is mother of DC no 1 as well as no 2? Oh, I'm lost.

Maybe they're all just into a ménage à trois.

Maybe handsome, Scouser, white van drivers are the new face of Mormonism.
(Though very probable that murder, violence, DA, extortion, adultery are frowned upon).
