Anyone else watching tonight?

(Ireland apparently gets Wednesday episodes instead.
No spoilers, please!).

It better be a good ending wrapping up lots of questions or I'll be writing a strong letter to the bbc Grin

ButterflyOfFreedom · 02/06/2017 23:14

I'm a bit confused too!?!
Maybe Mac is dead?? I definitely thought he had a knife put through his eye but then in the next scene no evidence of that???
Don't know the link with the photo James took or the weird set up he has with the 2 women.
I just hope episode 3 brings it all together satisfactorily and it isn't always just a dream / something supernatural etc .

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 02/06/2017 23:42

I have admittedly been drinking many Gin & Ts.
Gin Oh, gin, why do you make me think such twaddle?

But how's this for crazy plot twist:

  • Small kid James was brought up in Liverpool by his Dad, who split from his Mother after she became pregnant as a result of an affair.
  • With man who is Paula's Dad!
  • The resulting baby was GarageCallum!
(so only Paula's half brother, biologically, though neither are aware).
  • Paula's Mother reluctantly agreed to bring up GarageCallum as their own, after his own Mum was rendered incapable by something (Severe, ongoing illness? Serious brain injury after vicious attack by jealous Paula's Mum, who was then consumed by guilt/ pressganged into it by her husband).
  • James's DM has needed intensive nursing care ever since.
  • Small James was kept unaware of it all. Since the divorce, he has only ever known and visited his Mum in medical settings, so that is their norm.
  • Traumatically, adult James uncovered/ was informed of the lies, which has induced violent rage/ jealousy/ desire to seek revenge etc:
That he'd been deprived of a DM (who had chosen cheating on his DF, and thus James's best interests, above loyalty to them both).

That, conversely, his (hitherto-unknown about) baby half-brother GarageCallum (now perceived as partly responsible for the fracturing of James's family) was brought up by 2 'loving' parents, one of whom had ruined James's parents' marriage.
And had the luxury of a sibling.

  • We know different: Paula's/ Callum's Dad apparently temperamental and not to be upset at all costs, Paula's/ Callum's Mum (secretly actually his StepMum) appears cold and not exactly brimming with compassion. Difficult dynamics all round, from both.

She definitely shot Paula a 'here we go again'-type expression re
"Bad dreams: can I stay here tonight?"
"OK. Just don't upset your Father"
WTF, why wouldn't you sit down with your DD and find out more/ comfort her?
Bad blood between them.

Callum off the rails. Perhaps resented all his life for being a reminder of OW? Blamed for childhood camping knot strangling incident, even though Paula instigated it?
Suspect he'll regain consciousness to share some vital detail about probable arsonist murderer James.
(Or do we really believe it was a suicide attempt/ accident with his Primus stove?). Hmm

Doesn't explain how ScarySewn-UpMouthGirl fits in, though.
Or Crystal/ Morgan?
(Am sticking with my theory that Morgan was abducted).

Sidenote:
Paula, for the love of God, buy some water and stop knocking back your tablets dry.
(Why do tv characters always do it? How do they do it? Have you ever tried it?...it's horrendous).

I promise never to post again on MN, whilst under the influence.
Sorry all.
Was nice Gin though Grin

It looked like he cut his eyelid, not the actual eye.

millifiori · 03/06/2017 09:43

Thalia - hah - yes there's been a sudden surge in dry tablet swallowing in crime dramas. DH and I spotted that. Also someone has to throw up in the first episode. Telly crime bingo.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 03/06/2017 10:04

^ 10 hrs later. Have reread my previous post ramble

So sorry, everyone. Blush

Thalia, you're right, there is!

MintToBee · 03/06/2017 16:07

Just watched episode two. How did the police know where to find the cop and James?
I never knew Irish cop's carried guns.
Why did nobody notice the gun shots?
WTF is going on!
Can't wait for episode 3.

LorLorr2 · 03/06/2017 16:26

What pills is she actually taking?

Livedandlearned · 03/06/2017 19:55

Maybe they are pills for schizophrenia

SoupDragon · 03/06/2017 21:40

I've finally watched the last 10 minutes. Policeman can't be dead as others interacted with him.

Why did James hang about?
How did they find them?

DS1 takes his antihistamine dry because as a small child he often had to take them in the car before school because I forgot to remind him to take one at home! They are very small though.

SamoanSamosa · 03/06/2017 21:48

I can and do take pills dry. Caplets are easier than tablets and capsules tend to get stuck!!

It's all about getting a good wad of spit in your mouth first then swallow normally.

Sorry to add nothing else of interest to the discussion. Although I find it very hard to believe that the big boss man wouldn't think it strange to take out £250 cash and then end up dead. That is suspicious, very suspicious even if you suspect a random mugging gone wrong.

JenTeale · 03/06/2017 23:31

I'm finding this refreshingly weird.

I think the policeman is dead. Paula sees dead people.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 03/06/2017 23:52

^ Could be, Jen,
(Bruce Willis guest cameo next week?)

Anything's possible...based on the past 2 episodes, I think we can safely abandon the usual limitations of whether our theories sound far-fetched/ unlikely etc.!

What about: Mac's her imaginary 'protector guardian angel'-type, to compensate for being let down by too many other adults.

So has never even existed in RL at all?

OP posts:
LorLorr2 · 03/06/2017 23:57

I'm starting to not have the best hopes for the last episode.. there's a lot to sort out in one go!

CamberGirl · 04/06/2017 01:34

In the best tradition of Dallas, she wakes up and it was all a dream!

OkPedro · 04/06/2017 01:52

Unfortunately it's looking like Paula is either mentally unwell or a psychopath. When the detective was lying injured on the ground, James didn't move, even as the gard (policeman) was calling for help. This made me think James doesn't exist.

I just can't see how they'll wrap it all up the next episode.
Ep 1 was really good though

SoupDragon · 04/06/2017 08:13

How can James not exist?

Christmastree43 · 04/06/2017 09:01

I like the theories around Paula seeing dead people or some kind of mental illness (forgot about the pills), and also the idea about James' parentage - given that his family emigrated to Liverpool etc. Very interesting!!

onesilencetoofar · 04/06/2017 09:04

I have just downloaded the first two episodes and will be watching later. My mum is called PaulaGrin

SoupDragon · 04/06/2017 09:07

Didn't Paula say in his episode that she feels nothing? When she was told about Phillips earth she definitely showed feeling.

There's have been more questions than answers!!

LocalEditorMerton · 04/06/2017 13:56

DH reckons that the little girl with blood smeared across her face is Paula (in parallel life)?

Livedandlearned · 04/06/2017 15:50

The policeman can't be dead as he has conversations with his colleague and Paula's dad. Or is he dead now, wasn't before?
My dh is fed up of me trying to figure it all out but I like the weirdness of this programme, it's different from the usual dramas that have been on lately.

SoupDragon · 04/06/2017 16:45

He shook off a paramedic (?) in the aftermath attack so I think it's unlikely he is dead at all.
