I really enjoyed the book so looking forward to this. It's in 4 parts with Emily Watson playing the main character and Ben Chaplin as her lover. BBC1 9pm

Good article about it here.

The crypt was actually the restored chapel of the Middlesex Hospital.
The hospital was demolished, only leaving the chapel.

BelladiNotte · 23/01/2017 19:04

MR.Spook's deeply unattractive to me and probably nothing more than an Usher, so can get the key to the crypt easily as part of his job would be escorting the Great and the Good around. (And no, I don't know the book at all.) But what a creep! ""So here's a phone I can txt you on, it's payg but don't top up at the same places...meaning =I've done this loads of times with loads of girls and promise you,it's a system that works"- changes the subject away from telling her his name or his job. Just from the opening scenes I was thinking at the time that mumsnetteers would.have been hanging out a red flag line of buntingGrin

The80sweregreat · 23/01/2017 19:17

He is a player.
Heard a woman on five live with Adrian chiles the other week and she met a man who told her he was a spook. She fell for it ( conned her out of thousands) went to extra ordinary lengths and really fooled her, poor woman. Some people are very clever. (She was no fool, just duped) it does happen.

She is surrounded by creeps in this isnt she? Beautiful house. So jealous of that kitchen!

BelladiNotte · 23/01/2017 19:28

Player...yes, that's the word I was looking for. And her oh's still a sleazeball anorl.
Agree, nice kitchenSmile

The80sweregreat · 23/01/2017 19:34

That marble worktop, the size of it!
So funny when stranger player kicked that bucket though, only time i smiled.

hollyisalovelyname · 23/01/2017 19:35

Did any of you notice the other colleagues looking over at Yvonne and her rapist colleague as they shared the bottle.
Potential witnesses ? They were having fun will probably be inferred by said colleagues.
How did he know she was having an affair?
I just thought it was all a bit seedy.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 19:46

Holly yes, she inadvertently flashed at them.

bananaleaves · 23/01/2017 19:51

I missed the flashing bit!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 19:53

That's why they laughed. I wonder if they'll say she had no knickers on, she was pissed and flirty and 'what did she expect!'

Kennington · 23/01/2017 20:07

If she is so smart why does she think he is a spook?
Their conversation was chemistry dead which I think was the point. He had nought to say so I have no idea why she was so keen.

GrumpyOldBag · 23/01/2017 20:13

i missed the flashing too.

You lot are all so clever.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 20:15

Didn't mean she's smart/ got common sense just because she's academic.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 20:16

** doesn't

Stupid phone!

MuchasSmoochas · 23/01/2017 20:31

I missed the flashing too. But then I would have put my knicks back on in case I caught a chill.

southeastdweller · 23/01/2017 20:38

Think she calls him a 'spook' because it adds to the fun and mystery of the affair.

Trills · 23/01/2017 20:46

It's rather terrifying how quickly the coworker goes from she's having an affair to nobody would believe her to raping her.

Notjustuser1458393875 · 24/01/2017 00:32

FWIW nothing really gets permission to film in parliament. The film Suffragette did recently but that was a huge exception. The plaque looks identical though. It was put in the cupboard by Tony Benn - he screwed it in himself without asking permission.

NormaSmuff · 24/01/2017 06:22

Saw this last night. Enjoyed it. Really well played from Emily Watson.
Love the interactions with her and her husband, the interactions and the dullness and unfulfilness for her

hollyisalovelyname · 24/01/2017 07:33

How does the rapist know she is having an affair?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/01/2017 07:34

Does he?

NormaSmuff · 24/01/2017 07:49

She brushed him off after he bought her a coffee, said I have things to do.
she was giggling and texting while drunk like a school girl, and he leant over to get the champagne and probably read her text

MrsBotox · 24/01/2017 08:02

The scenes where sleazy Spook man was leading her deeper and deeper into the crypt, down steps and round labyrinthine corridoors seemed to represent her going further down into the dark, unacknowledged recesses of her subconscious towards an unexplored, dangerous but thrilling place.
This story is about what happens to women who dare to behave outiside the sexual norm ie they get punished. Not sure how it will end but I'll bet she is the loser.

absolutelynotfabulous · 24/01/2017 08:45

botox that's spot on!

NormaSmuff · 24/01/2017 08:52

The cufflinks and court scenes were also a give away Wink

MrsBotox · 24/01/2017 09:53

Thanks absoluteyfab. Warming to theme..crypt is a place where dead things are kept - not really buried, just walled up. Crypt here is a metaphor for buried but not dead longings and dark secrets. Spookman is a dark, mysterious, satanic presence with (so far) no name. He even looks demonic, a devil leading her down to a personal hell.
