I really enjoyed the book so looking forward to this. It's in 4 parts with Emily Watson playing the main character and Ben Chaplin as her lover. BBC1 9pm

Good article about it here.

Are you a spook, Dame?
Sadly not, know someone who would know though.

I fail to see the irony too- how is consensual hot sex comparable to horrific violent rape?Confused

PollyPerky · 23/01/2017 15:47

The irony is that she had no inkling of risk when she went into the crypt with a total stranger. My thoughts as they went deeper and deeper into the bowels of the building, alone, with a man she didn't know was 'Uh oh, silly girl he might attack or rape her.'

But when she was relaxed and pissed at a work function and went into an isolated office with a well known colleague- guess what happened?

PollyPerky · 23/01/2017 15:49

I'm a bit surprised no one can see the dramatic irony of the settings - one alone with a stranger where consensual sex happens, the other rape, on home territory, with a trusted colleague. it's not exactly hard to see is it?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 15:50

In fact I think they took care to blur out a lot of it and leave it to our imagination well yes,it doesn't have to be graphic to still be horrific.

Jayfee · 23/01/2017 15:50

Just watched most of first episode...and deleted recording of next episodes. Just seemed like soft porn. Am I missing something??

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 15:51

Not unless you think the two sorts of sex are comparable ,no Polly I don't see it.

absolutelynotfabulous · 23/01/2017 16:00

I think it's good. The book is excellent and thoroughly gripping. Being a bit more..ahem...mature myself I can easily see how Yvonne got carried away.

She's had kids, she's worked for a Phd, she's risen to prominence in the scientific world, she's sustained a long term relationship with a faithless husband. She's done all the right things. And I guess she wants a break-to do something that's out of character, that's reckless and exciting. She may be only looking for self-affirmation that she still "has it", and X provides it, in spades. I think the "spook" thinking is simply part of the fantasy, as is not knowing X's name. I think it's rather poignant-a middle-aged woman who's achieved so much, has given so much, and maybe just wants something fun for herself for a change?

If twentysomethings get pissed, pee in gutters and indulge in casual sex no one bats an eyelid. Why should it be any different for a woman of a certain age?

Off-piste a bit, but wasn't "George" Mrs Tembe's love interest in Doctors? Wink.

Can't wait for next week.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 16:05

I'll start the book tonight!

PollyPerky · 23/01/2017 16:08

Dame If you can't see it, I can't help you. It has nothing to do with the type of sex; it's about perceived risk on behalf of the woman. I think I explained it pretty clearly! When she went into the crypt, the tension was paramount through the camera angles and music, as if she were perhaps going to be attacked. But she had consensual sex. When she went into the colleague's office, the mood and tone was relaxed, as if nothing could go wrong.

GrumpyOldBag · 23/01/2017 16:08

Someone asked upthread about the broom cupboard in real life. i read somewhere (Guardian i think) that they weren't allowed to film in the real Palace of westminster, because of the subject matter, so this one wold have been a mock up filmed somewhere else.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 16:10

If you can't see it, I can't help you

It's ok,I don't need your help Smile

Grumpy I'll have a look on imbd...

MuchasSmoochas · 23/01/2017 16:11

I'm also struggling to see the irony. Yes I'm looking forward to it too next week. Really like the lead character, I can scrub up well enough but do have jelly baby concerns.
I most certainly agree about her husband's hair. He looks so handsome in Catastrophe. Keep waiting for him to crack a joke.

MuchasSmoochas · 23/01/2017 16:12

So is that real about the plaque on the door?

squoosh · 23/01/2017 16:21

There's definitely a plaque on the door.

MuchasSmoochas · 23/01/2017 16:25

Can I ask my MP to show it to me? Maybe not, he's not my type. Are there any handsome MPs who could show me round? Just wondering.

Deux · 23/01/2017 16:26

I'm not sure if I enjoyed this or not but I'll probably watch it all.

I did find myself thinking, what on earth does she see in him? In yesterday's episode I don't think they captured any chemistry between them and I found myself thinking, eww what a sleaze-ball.

When she went to her colleague's office I was actually thinking that now she'd had this sexual freedom that she'd maybe shag her colleague too so the rape scene was a shocker for me.

I don't think 007 is a spook and I reckon he'll be something quite pedestrian like a driver.

Nothing is as it seems though, is that what this is all about?

BlueOnMondayNight · 23/01/2017 16:27

Jayfee in answer to your question "Yes, you're missing something"

GinIsIn · 23/01/2017 16:29

I didn't hate the book, but I didn't find it particularly great either, and for me the series is shaping up the same way.

The affair is so sad and pedestrian the way it's portrayed that it's very hard to buy into the idea of reckless chemistry and passion that I think it needs.

NancyDonahue · 23/01/2017 16:32

Remember, spook man's role in Westminster must be important enough for him to have access to the crypt.

bananaleaves · 23/01/2017 16:40

When she went to her colleague's office I was actually thinking that now she'd had this sexual freedom that she'd maybe shag her colleague too so the rape scene was a shocker for me.

Oh god really? There was no indication she fancied her colleague! Every interaction with him was so platonic! I don't think just cos she found someone she fancied the pants off in Ben that she'd suddenly start shagging everyone Confused

southeastdweller · 23/01/2017 16:41

I also fail to see the irony in the episode, dramatic or otherwise.

Deux · 23/01/2017 17:05

Banana, it was me who said that, and yes it did go through my mind, in a OMG she's not going to get it on with him is she? Especially given I couldn't see what she found so alluring about 007 and he was effectively just a random bloke. I wondered how much of her desire was driven by his desire for her.

buttonmoonb4tea · 23/01/2017 17:16

Got the book, gonna start it tonight Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 17:18

I think Mr Spook is hot!

Formerpigwrestler9 · 23/01/2017 17:20
