I really enjoyed the book so looking forward to this. It's in 4 parts with Emily Watson playing the main character and Ben Chaplin as her lover. BBC1 9pm

Good article about it here.

Where does the mop bucket fit in? Does that too have a satanic symbolism? Grin.

squoosh · 24/01/2017 12:24

The mop bucket signifies the once solid ground of marriage and career becoming unstable beneath her feet.

It also signifies that she'd be better employed channelling her energies into extra housework rather than extra marital jiggerypokery.

MrsBotox · 24/01/2017 13:04

Destiny..you guessed!

MrsBotox · 24/01/2017 13:13

I like that squoosh. Yeah, bucket clanking around while jiggerypoking going on is symbolic toll bell of doom for her life, reputation and future.

wizzywig · 24/01/2017 13:15

Bucket? Where was that? I missed the flashing too

NancyDonahue · 24/01/2017 13:18

What was the significance of the knee trembler in the place where Emily Davison hid? (I'm too thick to think of something myself Confused)

BakeOffBiscuits · 24/01/2017 17:46

I found it all a bit sleezy too, and didn't enjoy it very much.

I just thought, what the heck are you doing? if your life is that unsatisfying that you'd start shagging a stranger, minutes after meeting him, leave your H and get a life.

But, I am intrigued as to how she ends up in court so will keep watching to find out.

BakeOffBiscuits · 24/01/2017 17:51

I didn't like the shagging in Emily Dickinson's cupboard.

Rather disrespectful IMO.

Cagliostro · 25/01/2017 01:06

Just watched first episode. Not read the book so no idea what'll happen.

Trills · 25/01/2017 07:46

Don't you think Emily Davison would think it rather funny? She was not against doing things that were "not allowed"

ProfessorBranestawm · 25/01/2017 09:10

I like all the analysis going on. Analysing films is fun but I tend to get distracted by the shagging Hmm :o

Also rather distracted by how beautiful Emily Watson is

wakemewhenitssummer · 25/01/2017 09:22

I'm not sure that I really enjoyed it, found it a bit slow really.
I kept thinking 'no, she really wouldn't do that'; the no name shagging, the obvious texting, leaving her phone switched on all the time.

Loving your analysis though.

YakiUdonYumYum · 25/01/2017 09:56

I enjoyed the first episode, but found the rape scene horrific (as it's meant to be), so much so that I'm put off watching any more - should I brace myself and continue with the series?

I'm just surprised that a woman in her position would risk everything for such an affair - even if it's exciting, he's good looking etc. She knows nothing about him, she's making things up about him (spook). But then I'm incredibly risk averse...

Ipitythescale · 25/01/2017 14:29

Just finished watching episode 1. Haven't read the book so I'm curious about how she ends up in court. Did not see her colleague raping her coming at all and I'm not sure if I actually enjoyed it or not if that makes sense. Should I persevere or forget the BBC drama and get the book?

absolutelynotfabulous · 25/01/2017 18:41

ipity do bothGrin.

absolutelynotfabulous · 25/01/2017 18:43

I'm intrigued by how she walks in those heels.

And I wish she'd tidy her bloody kitchen. It's a tipWink. Nice, though Envy.

Trills · 26/01/2017 07:41

Maybe the husband should tidy - it's his kitchen too.

NormaSmuff · 26/01/2017 08:13

I was surprised at the huge pot of chilli she was making for 2, didnt notice whether it was untidy.
I like realistic untidy kitchens

GinIsIn · 26/01/2017 08:15

Batch cooking, maybe?

Bumbleclat · 26/01/2017 08:37

trills I agree- husband should clean kitchen.
I like messy kitchen it represents a stand off between them around making their home nice. Neither seem to spend much time together in their home so why make it nice?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/01/2017 08:40

I don't even notice it was messy so it can't have been that badConfused

Ciutadella · 26/01/2017 08:48

Anyone else wondering what role 'Adam' is going to play? He is obviously 'an issue'. Those who have read the book won't be wondering, obviously - don't tell us though!

absolutelynotfabulous · 26/01/2017 09:32

I've just realised that I'm probably a bit neurotic about tidyness. Blush. And yes, husband should also be responsible for tidying.

Does anyone know where the "book" link is?

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/01/2017 14:27

Just started to watch

So she doesn't know this man and within few mins decided to kiss and shag Him in the broom Cupboard

Nothing quite like romance 😂
