I really enjoyed the book so looking forward to this. It's in 4 parts with Emily Watson playing the main character and Ben Chaplin as her lover. BBC1 9pm

Good article about it here.

Just finished it and reread the book; I still don't understand how the police caught Mark. Did Yvonne turn him in when she was arrested? I know there was CCTV footage of him but without anything to link him to George or her it seems far-fetched that they would be able to identify and arrest him on the same day.

NormaSmuff · 10/02/2017 06:37

Although he changed his blood soaked clothes , he didn't change his shoes, and left blood in yvonne's car

Destinysdaughter · 10/02/2017 08:52

Can only assume it was the CCTV that caught him?

Was the relevance of Yvonnes husband having an affair just showing that their life wasn't perfect? And how their lives were turned upside down by her thinking he was cheating when really he was loyal apart from the fling with Rosa?

SapphireStrange · 10/02/2017 14:05

her thinking he was cheating when really he was loyal apart from the fling with Rosa?

I'm not sure what your definition of loyal is. Confused By that token, was Yvonne faithful apart from the fling with Mark?

But anyway, I think the significance was that their lives were a little settled, dull; they'd been together a long time and sometimes people have a 'grass is greener' moment. And that life/marriage/morality is complex –Yvonne couldn't really take him to task about Rosa because she was also guilty of an affair, and vice versa with Mark.

One thing that left a slight bad taste in my mouth was that Mark 'got away' with his fling with not much in the way of consequences, whereas Yvonne's was 'punished' by a rape, stalking and ending up on trial for murder.

pineappleeyes · 10/02/2017 14:24

I know he cheated but he was supportive when he found out apart the rape & murder That was my point.

SapphireStrange · 10/02/2017 14:36

Well, she didn't 'think' he was cheating; he WAS. That was my point.

But anyway, the main thrust of my post was to answer your question about the relevance of Mark's affair.

Formerpigwrestler9 · 10/02/2017 15:37

Mark 'got away' with his fling with not much in the way of consequences
plenty of unfinished business for a sequel imo
you could argue that he was manipulated into killing the rapist, yvonne had revenge, the man who attacked her was brutally murdered

Davros · 10/02/2017 15:47

BC lovers should check him out as Cary Grant in last night's Urban Myths on Sky Arts. I started a thread but there's tumbleweed blowing through

SapphireStrange · 10/02/2017 16:29

Former, oops, I don't mean Mark, I mean her husband! Gary.

Davros, that sounds great but I don't have SKY.

Formerpigwrestler9 · 10/02/2017 16:46

ah comprende SapphWink

sherazade · 10/02/2017 22:08

I didn't think Gary was anywhere near supportive enough about the rape

RainbowJack · 10/02/2017 23:24

What a crock of shite.

Not a single character had a redeeming quality. They were all selfish twats.

Woe is me, my life is sad and dull. My wife doesn't need me, my son doesn't love me. Let's all just fuck about.

4 hours or crying face with a quickie break every so often so it's not too monotonous.

Haven't read the book. Hope it's better than this.

Cagliostro · 10/02/2017 23:47

Damn I don't have sky either!

thisonehasalittlecar · 11/02/2017 00:12

Ok, not to keep harping on about this... but I'm going to harp on about it. I get that the CCTV and the blood incriminate Mark once he's been caught, but how did they catch him? They are arrested the same day as he kills George, so the police question the neighbours, someone mentions her car, they get the car on CCTV and track her down. But all they have on him is random dark-haired guy in sweatpants getting out of her car. They see where he gets on the train, and then possibly where he gets off, but this would be hours later. How do they identify who he is?
