I really enjoyed the book so looking forward to this. It's in 4 parts with Emily Watson playing the main character and Ben Chaplin as her lover. BBC1 9pm

Good article about it here.

I think it's safe to say she kept the Spanx in her bag and let him think she'd just removed some tiny lacy knickers!

ImperialBlether · 23/01/2017 14:28

You'll carry out the experiment, Nancy? You are so selfless!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 14:30

I had a ONS in my yoof,I had the biggest pair of Bridget Jones knickers on imaginable,he didn't seem to mindGrin I've only my just remembered that,I've been married 27 years so it was YEARS ago!

GrumpyOldBag · 23/01/2017 14:30

Also, there is going to be a thing about the phone charger isn't there? Because her husband took the charger on the trip with him.

What's going to be the significance of that, I wonder?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 14:31

Perhaps husband will realise the charger won't fit his phone and her normal one does?

GrumpyOldBag · 23/01/2017 14:34

Ah yes, good thinking Diazepam.

ImperialBlether · 23/01/2017 14:39

I wouldn't see the point of having a spare phone, tbh. A password on the phone should be easier to sort out than having him spot a new phone.

FinallyHere · 23/01/2017 14:40

I came on here to ask about the point that puzzled me, and, as always, MN has got there ahead of me.

So far, I've only read the book (recording is waiting for me as soon as I get home) where it is explicitly stated that she doesn't come in the first encounter. It puzzled me, that she was so swept away by ... what exactly? Being treated as a wank sock in the crypt of the House of Commons appears to be the answer here. That doesn't seem plausible to me, but what do I know?

Maybe, as a PP (i think) suggests, she is swept up in the fantasy and hopes it will get better? That the sex is really 'all in her mind'. Plausibility stretched a bit thin, even if she had been married to the same man since early 20s with no other partners. Did she really never read Cosmo to find out how it all really works? Enquiring readers (and viewers) would like to know.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 14:42

Depends how free and easy they are with each others phones normally I suppose,we have locks on ours but I know friends who share their phones with their partners/kids.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 14:43

I really want to see that crypt now!

NancyDonahue · 23/01/2017 14:48

I wonder, was it filmed in the real hiding place of Emily Davison or was it a mock up? I'm pretty clueless when it comes to laws about filming in such buildings

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 14:50

I can find out,I have 'connections' Grin

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/01/2017 15:10

Are you a spook, Dame?

llangennith · 23/01/2017 15:11

I kept waiting for something to actually...happenConfused

ImperialBlether · 23/01/2017 15:16

And then it did!

BlueOnMondayNight · 23/01/2017 15:16

illicit broom-cupboard sex and rape not enough action in your book llangennith??! Shock

MuchasSmoochas · 23/01/2017 15:22

The only think I remember about the book is that I didn't like it. I thought it was really badly written and unbelievable. But I think the tv show is really good and trots along nicely. Maybe I find drama more engaging in a tv/film than book. The rape scene was just awful, I thought the black screen bits were very effective.

PollyPerky · 23/01/2017 15:24

Some people are talking about the female lead as if she were a real person. It's fiction! The author can make her into who she wants!

Not sure how some posters are working out how old she was when she had her daughter. Sure, the daughter said her mum was '5 years younger when she had her' but we don't know how old the daughter is (do we?) Daughter could be 22, and mum had her at 28....

(unless I've missed something...)

I don't agree with all the lack of body confidence some of you are picking up on. Sure, she said she was a 'jelly baby' but many women say they have wobbly bits, as a fact, not necessarily showing they have low self esteem. (I;ve got wobbly bits, but overall am fairly happy with my body.)

I didn't think the last scene of the rape was terrifying or horrific. Surprising maybe , but not even that if you'd watched the body language of the guy when she was texting.

It wasn't nice but you see worse enacted on Crime Watch. In fact I think they took care to blur out a lot of it and leave it to our imagination.

I think the irony was she was letting herself go into an office alone, drunk, with a colleague who then raped her, whereas earlier she'd gone into a broom cupboard with a complete stranger and had 'hot 'sex.

FinallyHere · 23/01/2017 15:28

Well, she had 'hot sex' with an orgasm for one, which is pretty much my point.

PollyPerky · 23/01/2017 15:30

she made faces and noises as if she had an orgasm but maybe she was faking it? (well she was anyway we assume, for the cameras.)

ImperialBlether · 23/01/2017 15:35

I think the irony was she was letting herself go into an office alone, drunk, with a colleague who then raped her, whereas earlier she'd gone into a broom cupboard with a complete stranger and had 'hot 'sex.

I'm failing to see the irony there.

squoosh · 23/01/2017 15:35

'Not sure how some posters are working out how old she was when she had her daughter. Sure, the daughter said her mum was '5 years younger when she had her' but we don't know how old the daughter is (do we?) Daughter could be 22, and mum had her at 28....'

Just guessing that's all! I'm assuming her character is around 50 and the daughter looked about 28.

squoosh · 23/01/2017 15:36

I think the irony was she was letting herself go into an office alone, drunk, with a colleague who then raped her, whereas earlier she'd gone into a broom cupboard with a complete stranger and had 'hot 'sex.

Really?

ImperialBlether · 23/01/2017 15:37

But that doesn't make sense: "Daughter could be 22, and mum had her at 28."

The daughter said, "You were five years younger than I am when you got pregnant with me." So the ages above would be the other way around.

squoosh · 23/01/2017 15:40

Exactly Imperial.
