I really enjoyed the book so looking forward to this. It's in 4 parts with Emily Watson playing the main character and Ben Chaplin as her lover. BBC1 9pm

Good article about it here.

I assume she isn't going to tell the police? In the security van/court scenes she's clearly the accused, so has she bypassed the law and just bumped him off?

Elendon · 23/01/2017 13:09

Yes, I too think the 'she liked it rough' will be a defence. Also, I suspect that he knew she was having an affair, he said so, and was stalking her (so knows she has had sex in alleyways).

Gosh this is an expose on women's sexuality and the morals surrounding it, especially older women. I do expect much victim blaming to ensue.

ImperialBlether · 23/01/2017 13:14

Countess, yes, sorry, I realised as I pressed Send that I was wrong on that. I'm not sure "liking it rough" usually equates to "liking a punch in the face", though. And he clearly knows she's having outdoor sex with another man. I felt in the book there was more passion; I wasn't convinced by that in the drama.

bananaleaves · 23/01/2017 13:45

Enjoyed this but found the sense of impending doom really unsettling. Haven't read the book so no idea where it's going.

Housewife2010 · 23/01/2017 13:47

Am I the only one who watched the party scene and wondered whether she'd put her down back on?

Housewife2010 · 23/01/2017 13:48

Down? Weird autocorrect. I meant spanx.

ImperialBlether · 23/01/2017 13:58

Oh I think the Chaplin guy would've kept them, don't you? A trophy.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 14:03

In that situation my fear would be that he'd get away with it by saying she agreed to it - no way could anyone say that if she had a bruised face I'm thinking she won't report it seeing as she's had sex with Mr Spook earlier so she's have both lots of semen inside her.

I knew Mr Colleague was going to rape her right from when they were on the bench and accidentally flashed at the group. What was shocking was the way it was filmed and hats off to them as it's rare that rape scenes are filmed in a shocking manner imo.

Elendon · 23/01/2017 14:04

Why would she hand over her spanx to her lover? I mean really?

ImperialBlether · 23/01/2017 14:05

You're right - he wanted to know she was naked more than he wanted her knickers.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 14:05

Why not? She's in the throes of a passionate affair, she's doing all sorts she wouldn't normally

twinklefoot · 23/01/2017 14:08

Yes to PP about Benbeing a security guard

NancyDonahue · 23/01/2017 14:13

Honest question - does 'standing up' really do it for most women? That fast as well? I find that bit quite unbelievable, but maybe it's just me. The same happened in Night Manager and The Affair and in those there was a comfy bed just a few feet away.

NancyDonahue · 23/01/2017 14:15

Maybe it just looks better on TV!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 14:16

I think it looks better for telly!

ImperialBlether · 23/01/2017 14:16

I'm always amazed at the number of times I've read/watched a sex scene where without any notice, there's full intercourse. Then it's stops and it's all over. I just don't understand why any woman would find that a great situation.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 14:19

It depends,if you're really turned on before hand it can only take a few minutes, can't it?

Destinysdaughter · 23/01/2017 14:21

I know that happens a lot in films and tv, maybe it's more visual or is supposed to signify how uncontrollable the passion is? It also means the actors can mainly keep their clothes on...

Bloody uncomfortable IMO!

Lolling at the idea of her sexily handing him her Spanx.

I've never mastered standing up sex myself and they did make it look pretty easy, but a quickie can be good so I don't think that's unrealistic.

NancyDonahue · 23/01/2017 14:23

I would need to stand on a box and dh's knees just wouldn't cope Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 14:23

What was he meant to do with the Spanks? He couldn't have put them in his pocket, did he have a man bag?

I didn't think he was sleazy at all, I've always liked BC.

ImperialBlether · 23/01/2017 14:24

No, of course it can happen, but there's a lead up, isn't there? They don't just throw you into a doorway and get on with it, surely?! I think if the only time the guy was interested was when it lasted 30 seconds and only resulted in his orgasm, I'd lose interest pretty fast.

GrumpyOldBag · 23/01/2017 14:24

I think she won't report the rape because she's afraid the colleague rapist will shop her affair to her husband.

Also, I don't get why a 'spook' would have been in the room when she was giving evidence to the Select Committee at the start of the episode? Civil servant, yes.

I thought the standing-up sex looked very uncomfortable. OK for the first time. But not again and again.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/01/2017 14:25

She didn't look unsatisfiedWink

NancyDonahue · 23/01/2017 14:26

Even if it was Tom Hardy I'd still need a bit more than a lingering foot and a bit of foot play under the table. Although, I'd be willing to give it a try Wink
