I really enjoyed the book so looking forward to this. It's in 4 parts with Emily Watson playing the main character and Ben Chaplin as her lover. BBC1 9pm

Good article about it here.

Despite his shagging ways I warmed to the husband more tonight.

It's so frustrating the way she continued to romanticise the situation when all the evidence was there that Mark was a lying nutter who she didn't know one little bit.

jujubeanz · 05/02/2017 22:17

She's getting right on my nerves. STOP LOOKING AT HIM AND WHY DID YOU REPLY TO THE TEXT AND ALSO TELL YOUR HUSBAND WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.

Frouby · 05/02/2017 22:18

Puh. British academy film awards bollocks on next sunday at 9pm. That's why it's on tomorrow.

Hope there is something good on the week after!

Delatron · 05/02/2017 22:21

Yes she really doesn't wanting be adding in perjury to the list of things she's being tried for.

She's so silly not to tell her husband. It will come out and when it does he won't believe a word she has said and she'll lose his support. No spoilers but I remember at this point in the book getting so annoyed with her. For an intelligent woman she is acting very stupidly.

Arcadia · 05/02/2017 22:30

She seemed more shocked by the fact that he wasn't a 'spook' - which he never actually said - than by the fact that he viciously murdered someone, involving her, and blew her bail.

rollonthesummer · 05/02/2017 22:30

I enjoyed tonight but I am still very confused!

Why didn't she tell her husband??

The shagging will surely come out!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/02/2017 22:31

You know I said Mark Bonnar wasn't dishy? I've changed my mind,I might've uttered a muffled squeal when he held that knife up to the consultant's throatBlush

Trills · 05/02/2017 22:32

Sounds like you like "dangerous men" too!

Clawdy · 05/02/2017 22:33

Funny to see two actors from the Unforgotten in it tonight! Can't see too much of Mark Bonnar though......

lottieandmia · 05/02/2017 22:35

Absolutely loving this. It's so hard to find anything decent to watch / read. I must read the book - I'll bet it's hugely better than The Girl on The Train.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/02/2017 22:37

No,I just liked the way he was so protective and commanding all of a sudden

Gwenhwyfar · 05/02/2017 22:44

I thought that when the husband said something about not expecting him (Mark) to look like he did that he suspected there was an affair.

Trills · 05/02/2017 22:44

I like a man who destroys victim-blaming myths :o

wowfudge · 05/02/2017 22:45

We are pondering why Yvonne's solicitor lied about the monkey experiment. What does anyone think?

Charley50 · 05/02/2017 22:46

She did look quite shocked at the injuries he inflicted. But maybe she was conflicted as also felt vindicated that her saviour did that to her rapist.

Delatron · 05/02/2017 22:49

I also think Gary clocked about the affair in the kitchen when the consultant was there.

Was her lawyer basically wanting her to think Mark will drop her in it therefore she stop protecting him and tell the truth?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/02/2017 22:49

Trills- too bloody right!

I was confused about the monkey experiment too.

TizzyDongue · 05/02/2017 22:49

To make her think Mark would sacrifice her I think wowfudge other than that I'm not sure!

Deux · 05/02/2017 22:51

Oh my. I'm not sure if I enjoyed tonight at all. I found myself thinking, crikey you're such a dumbass. She doesn't say much, does she. Doesn't really give much away. I want to give her a shake.

I don't see how the affair isn't going to come out. Is there even a niece who's interested in science? Perjury?

I wonder if Mark is going to throw her under the bus? And what's all the monkey experiment business?

Last episode better be good.

Delatron · 05/02/2017 22:51

I think her lawyer can see she is all doe eyed over him it's doing her no favours.

If she came clean about everything the case against him would be stronger?

Wondermoomin · 05/02/2017 22:52

Yes that's what her lawyer was getting at - everyone has a tipping point at which they'll throw someone else under the bus for self preservation. (Figuratively not literally obviously.)

However what puzzles me is that her husband then said that the monkey saves the baby - that wasn't the same as the book; there, we're left with the understanding as the lawyer gave it. So I'm not sure why the programme is portraying the lawyer to have lied, but perhaps we'll find out.

Wondermoomin · 05/02/2017 22:54

Sorry just to be clearer - her lawyer is reminding her that Mark will sacrifice her if he realises it might make him less likely to be convicted for murder.

hollyisalovelyname · 05/02/2017 22:58

So her family don't know she had an affair with Mark Costley ?

rollonthesummer · 05/02/2017 23:00

I didn't understand that about the monkey experiment. I presume this is a real experiment? Wouldn't the lawyer have presumed she'd have know about the experiment-being a scientist? Why did her husband say something wildly different about it?

Deux · 05/02/2017 23:04

I think the lawyer is telling the truth about the experiment and the husband is lying either deliberately to protect her or he is misremembering.

It's all so ambiguous. And Yvonne even when she has achieved success is still vulnerable from men. All these men are manipulating her - husband, lover, lawyer. She now appears so weak and dependent.
