I really enjoyed the book so looking forward to this. It's in 4 parts with Emily Watson playing the main character and Ben Chaplin as her lover. BBC1 9pm

Good article about it here.

rollon - she said animal behaviour wasn't her field so she didn't know about it. The lawyer lied about the outcome of the experiment, presumably as others have suggested above to show her that people will sacrifice those they care about for self-preservation i.e. Mark will drop her in it.

FromDistantOphir · 05/02/2017 23:19

I thought the 'consultant' was brilliantly smug.....just the sort of prat who you want to biff, but you just about hold yourself back because he does have one or two things worth listening to....

wowfudge · 05/02/2017 23:20

Just read an interview with Louise Doughty in the Telegraph - apparently the monkey experiment is about a female making a rational choice for the survival of her genes. A rational choice. However women aren't expected to make rational choices.

QueenoftheAndals · 05/02/2017 23:31

I think I fancy Mark Bonnar even more after that kitchen scene with the smarmy consultant!

bringbacksideburns · 05/02/2017 23:32

Really glad I read this thread because I thought that was it! Didn't realise it finishes tomorrow.
Emily Watson is a fantastic natural actress without being a big 'presence', very believable.

Deux · 05/02/2017 23:47

I wonder what Yvonne's instinct is though. Is she overriding her instinct for self preservation? Maybe she'll change her mind now that she knows Mark is not a spook.

storynanny · 06/02/2017 00:09

Ive reread the book but i still cant work out what the twist is. Anyone want to pm me? i thinkmim missing something obvious

Formerpigwrestler9 · 06/02/2017 00:41

she does seem implausibly naive, if it was real life she'd have posted threads on here asking if she was BU

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/02/2017 00:47

Fab episode and seems mn was right that he wasn't a spook

So worked in security. Poss a secuity guard at hoc

Both stick to the story and all will be fine or will he berry her

She seems very cool and calm

We all know phones are easily accessible in prison 😂😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/02/2017 00:48

Ps who is the 2nd unforgotten actor?

Pasithea · 06/02/2017 00:52

Loving your comments everyone but can't comment. It is one of my favourite books and I will be very upset if it all doesn't come out in the programme. The book did have a few twists.

Tartyflette · 06/02/2017 01:58

Yvonne's solicitor (he of the monkey experiment tale) is also in The Unforgotten, albeit heavily bearded, as the teacher/former sex worker's husband.

Tartyflette · 06/02/2017 02:03

Someone earlier said they thought Mark/Ben Chaplin should have been taller -- I looked him up on IMDB and it said he is 5'11 - not exactly a shortarse; Emily Watson is 5'8 and also wearing high heels so they look a similar height.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/02/2017 06:22

Phones are easily accessible in prison and a whole host of other things.

I was lying in bed last night thinking about where this is going and I have a theory but will keep it to myself and see if I'm right tonight !

theclick · 06/02/2017 06:33

She's getting right on my nerves. STOP LOOKING AT HIM AND WHY DID YOU REPLY TO THE TEXT AND ALSO TELL YOUR HUSBAND WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.

She's not the most likeable character but I think it's deliberate

Timetogetup0630 · 06/02/2017 06:36

I am also watching this on catch up ( Long time Homeland fan here).
But it's so nerve wracking I can only watch it in 10 minute bursts !

SmileAndNod · 06/02/2017 06:51

I've not read the book but watched the first three episodes yesterday. I love it. But what has Ben Chaplin been in before? He looks really familiar and it's bugging me. Was he an army officer? Doctor? I hate it when this happensSmile

southeastdweller · 06/02/2017 06:55

He's been in loads - Game On, The Truth about Cats and Dogs, the recent Cinderella film...

FabulouslyGlamourousFerret · 06/02/2017 06:57

No she's not likeable is she .... can't empathise with her really, her voice on the thought sequences irritates me 'I'm fucking a spook' ODFOD

SmileAndNod · 06/02/2017 07:23

Thank you but I've not seen any of those either. Maybe he just has one of those faces!

Lottapianos · 06/02/2017 07:39

Loved her husband defending her in front of the smarmy consultant. He was extra dishy this week.

I'm so extremely unsurprised that Mark is not a spy after all (like many of us on here). Intrigued to find out what the big twist is. It's been an odd series - pretty unbelievable in many ways but I appreciated they way they showed how utterly distraught she was after the rape

QueenoftheAndals · 06/02/2017 07:39

Ps who is the 2nd unforgotten actor?

Adeel Akhtar, who plays her lawyer Jas. Possibly not as recognisable without his beard. He's only 36 - I assumed he was at least a decade older than that!

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/02/2017 08:03

Amazing a diff a beard makes

Thank you :)

Entrigued what the twist is

minisausage · 06/02/2017 08:13

I think she's going to realise that he's a arse and drop mark in it

80sMum · 06/02/2017 08:14

I have been impressed so far with the TV adaptation of Appletree Yard. I read the book a couple of years ago and was gripped by it from the first page. I was wondering how it would translate to TV. I think the script writer has done an excellent job, managing to retain the unnerving sense of Yvonne's obsession making her so reckless and of her not being in possession of all the facts.
