Is anyone watching?

OP posts:
qazxc · 07/12/2016 19:15

I find this riveting. It gives me the creeps. And was almost sick to my stomach when he left the baby with reg.
I haven't seen the film, or know about the case so it's all new to me iykwim.
I also have to have the subtitles on because of reg's very low voice but reading this thread I see there's a reason for it.
I assume that the wife didn't know what he was up to. She knew about the unfaithfulness and there was domestic violence but from that to my husband is a serial killer is quite a big leap.

Bahhhhhumbug · 07/12/2016 19:37

I find it really sad to watch to think it really happened , that poor poor man it really confirms capital punishment has no place in society because even with today's advanced forensics and DNA etc (when it is very unlikely he would get away with pinning it on someone else these days) there still are wrongful convictions. I think Christie's wife just got dragged into it all and was probably terrified of challenging him by the end and he had complete control over her so maybe that's why she covered for him/turned a blind eye. Easy to think she should've told the police her suspicions but it was very different times for a poor working class housewife then as PP have said and she was just as much a victim as the others.

seasidesally · 07/12/2016 19:44

just watching Corrie and Norris looks just like christie

southeastdweller · 07/12/2016 21:25

I've hesitated posting this because I don't wish to sound as if I'm diminishing Christie's vile crimes, but I felt the Evans story was more impactful in the film. I kept thinking in last night's episode about Tim's accent, how pretty the actor is who played him (in contrast to the real Tim), and about John Hurt, who was more believable and moving in the film.

CoolCarrie · 07/12/2016 21:42

John Hurt was superb as Timothy Evans. He is such a brilliant actor.

TheHiphopopotamus · 07/12/2016 22:16

how pretty the actor is who played him

Hmm, I think I agree. But I don't think any actor could portray that wartime/post-war impoverished 'look'. I think people today look too well nourished and healthy. I thought the same of the girl who played Beryl.

The film is a classic though. I think I'm trying to appreciate both for what they are, but it's hard not to compare.

MsGameandWatch · 07/12/2016 22:57

My ex husband is Welsh and he and his sisters switch between accents depending on who they're talking to - family etc. I always rather liked it.

Bejazzled · 07/12/2016 23:06

Did you see the comments in I think The Mirror? I had googled to find out more about the real story as I hadn't heard of it. The nephew of (I think) Timothy Evans gives this portrayal an absolute thumbs up for the accuracy and portrayal.

I won't post the link though as it contains spoilers.

Bedsheets4knickers · 08/12/2016 08:37

I need to watch the film , can't believe I've never heard about this

Lorelei76 · 08/12/2016 10:05

Just popped by to see what others thought
I can be very impatient - I watched the first one and thought it was okay but slow

then I watched 15 mins of the second one and couldn't be arsed. I know the story so I know that interesting things happen but I wonder if they will do that thing of stretching out all the boring stuff and putting the important parts into a 20 second scene.

was anyone else bored with ep 2 but persevered and found it worth it? Maybe the film is better.

NoahVale · 08/12/2016 18:09

yes Tim was acted so well i though

ShelaghTurner · 08/12/2016 18:35

I haven't seen the series but the film is very good.

Davros · 08/12/2016 21:20

As a pp said, Ethel certainly was also a victim! I think the film is better but this is still very good.

DrCoconut · 09/12/2016 19:01

Given up on it. It's too slow and lost my interest.

Xmaslover · 09/12/2016 23:59

Why did Christie get beat up when the neighbour knocked on for Ethel?
Had he been having a affair with someone?

This may be a silly question but why did he kill Geraldine?
I thought he was going to let Ethel look after her

NoahVale · 10/12/2016 07:21

I dont think Ethel was complicit in his murdering therefore he killed the baby, he was was going to kill her, he just lied to Tim Sad

morningtoncrescent62 · 10/12/2016 09:35

This may be a silly question but why did he kill Geraldine?

He was a serial killer and rapist - so there weren't any logical or defensible reasons for anything he did.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 10/12/2016 13:50

Jesus fucking christ. The baby. Sad

Superb acting all round, no?

NoahVale · 10/12/2016 16:06

i think so too

Xmaslover · 10/12/2016 23:57

Why do people think Ethel isn't complicit in the murders?
She covered up for Christie by saying that coat was hers when that guy saw it.
She must have known then that he had done something awful.
She would be charged as an accessory surely by covering up

Cocolepew · 11/12/2016 14:30

I agree Xmas, she knows whats going on.

NoahVale · 11/12/2016 19:22

i dont spose we will ever know.
i dont believe she knew

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 11/12/2016 19:38

I don't know about the real Ethel (holding off research until the series has finished) but in this dramatization the production has clearly taken a stand and it's obvious to me that she knows and covers for him, be it out of fear and/or denial and/or codependency and/or something else (more sinister).

Flumplet · 11/12/2016 19:43

I know poor Geraldine. When he carried her up the stairs I said 'oh no poor Geraldine!' And dh said - he's giving her to foster parents and I just looked at him like Hmm and said 'I dont think he is dh!'

I've really enjoyed it so far, only slightly distracted by tims swapping accents. never seen the film so can't compare to that. I think that the actor playing the murder is doing a great job - very creepy!

MarciaBlaine · 11/12/2016 20:00

Creepy as fuck and superbly well acted. And I have read the book and seen the original film so nothing is a surprise exactly.
