Thread one here

So, Sophie Giroux returned pretending to be Alice Webster. DNA results on the body in the shed confirm she is related to Sam.

Baptiste has found out about Henry Reed and the Brigadier being involved with a 9 year old girl in Iraq in 1991. Henry Reed was paying this girls brother.

There are 3 girls in the rollercoaster photo, Sophie, Alice and possibly the girl from Iraq? She has that colouring.

Henry Reed apparently committed suicide although Julien told Daniel he didn't. Whatever Daniel found out about him made him sick.

Nadia has been badly beaten and her husband is still in prison after being identified by Sophie/Alice. Matthew was made to promise to say sorry to the butcher.

Sophie is now in Switzerland. As is the newly spray painted yellow campervan that abducted Alice. Gemma and Baptiste doubt the DNA results as they are still looking for answers 2 years after she returned.

Birds keep being mentioned. Sophie and Alice both had the Web tattoo on their wrists.

The question wasn't "do you want a family on your own" - it was "have you ever thought about having kids".

Allthebestnamesareused · 03/11/2016 09:55

Also I think questioning her about wanting a family of her own may be to see how serious about Sam she is and nothing more sinister than that.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 03/11/2016 09:56

Oh sorry, I thought they were just talking families.

Bestthingever · 03/11/2016 09:58

I wondered about the body having been dug up as well. I thought it looked like it had already been burned.

Vistaverde · 03/11/2016 10:05

When Gemma and Sam were in the hospital arguing and Gemma basically said that Sam hadn't bee around when Alice was a baby I had assumed that it was because he was serving overseas somewhere. But could they have been estranged for a while and during this time he fathered a second child?

GrumbleBumble · 03/11/2016 10:10

timeIhad towards the end of ep 4 (last night) Gemma phoned Eve and said there was a third girl. Another look at the roller coaster photo showed returned girl (Sophie?) next to the girl Gemma says is her daughter (Alice) and behind them alone in the seat is another girl/woman wearing the bird necklace.

Kr1stina · 03/11/2016 10:11

We know that SophieAlice had a baby and I wonder if that child was buried in the same grave and that's why she left flowers .

Or is the child still alive but held captive and that's why she is doing what her captors want ?

FoxesOnSocks · 03/11/2016 10:31

The DNA match might mean any of the following:

The brig is Sam's father and the body in the shed is Girl 3 who is related to the brig, but shares DNA with Sam. All seems a bit of a stretch though.

The body is actually Alice (already dead) and put there by Sophie or Girl 3 (depending on which one was pretending to be Alice - it seems likely this was Sophie because of the finger thing). The question is why: if Alice died why not just return her body, or bother at all?

The body is Girl 3 who Sam fathered in this mysterious period of not being there. Placed there by Alice and Sophie so that they could have Alice officially dead and she wouldn't be looked for anymore, be able to take on a new ID and travel (again why?)

What year was the fairground picture from?

Sam fathered another girl - Girl 3

FoxesOnSocks · 03/11/2016 10:34

^ random placement of last sentence!! I started writing the options, got distracted then came back and evidently started writing again above that!!

Elendon · 03/11/2016 10:40

Why would Eve have so many scans and why did Sam say he couldn't go through that all again?

I think 2010 is significant in the timeline. Alice was born in 1992, the first Iraq invasion.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 03/11/2016 10:46

So Sam wasn't around when Alice was a baby because he was in Iraq.

MargotLovedTom · 03/11/2016 10:57

It could be that there's a cover up going on re the DNA - Eve simply accepted and relayed the information after being given it in a phone call: no paper evidence was seen. The Army want the family to believe the body in the shed is Alice so nobody (namely Gemma and Baptiste) will go poking around any further. I think Gettrick (the press officer played by a Scottish actor I really like but whose name escapes me) will have a big part to play in the coming episodes.

Also thought it was weird about Gemma's comment to Eve re having children.

MargotLovedTom · 03/11/2016 10:59

But I also agree that the body could have been Sam's daughter and not Gemma's. Don't know what to think.

ppandj · 03/11/2016 11:02

Just caught up with episode 4 and I'm more confused than ever!

hollyisalovelyname · 03/11/2016 11:03

Shoot - episode 4 did not record for me. Unable to use/ watch BBC player in Ireland.
Grrrrrrr Sad

FoxesOnSocks · 03/11/2016 11:15

Yes another option could be the DNA result was false. Well glad that's narrowed down the options 🤔

FoxesOnSocks · 03/11/2016 11:25

Found this theory on Den of Geek

Third Girl in the shed was the secret daughter of Sam Webster and Nadia Hertz, conceived on duty in Iraq in 1991. Alice is alive and reunited with her lover Sophie in Switzerland. Sophie killed Henry Reed. The skinhead twins attacked Nadia. And Hilda the parrot masterminded it all.

Finewineandcake · 03/11/2016 11:33

So Matthew is racked with guilt because he locked fake Alice in the shed. How did she then get out to place the body in the shed. I'm thinking 3rd girl must have helped her by unlocking the shed to release her, plus carrying a dead body would surely require 2 people? Also there was snow on the ground the night of the fire, what about footprints to the shed. Plus it was a massive risk to take creeping around with a dead body outside of the house with it's massive picture windows. Definitely fake Alice had to have had an accomplice.

TalkingSheds · 03/11/2016 11:46

Where has Sophie/Alice been keeping the dead body? Who's been helping her?

LarkDescending · 03/11/2016 11:48

If a body was placed in the shed, it is likely to have been in the 3 hours FakeAlice was missing during the day on 22 December, not after FakeAlice had been locked in that night.

However I agree that with a massive police search going on for her that afternoon, it would be extraordinary if she (with or without help) had managed to convey a corpse through her own snowy back garden without being noticed.

HarryPottersMagicWand · 03/11/2016 12:04

I had a thought randomly in the middle of the night, what if Alice died when she was captive but wasn't supposed to so Sophie came back as Alice to try and bring some closure to the family but as Gemma and Baptiste suspected something, it didn't go as planned?

Someone is definitely using SophieAlice as a pawn, whether she is now willing to go along with it I don't know. She seems to be. She seems to know exactly what she was doing. I was suspicious when she was in the hospital telling a room full of total strangers all about her rape. It seemed off to me and slightly rehearsed.

HarryPottersMagicWand · 03/11/2016 12:05

The body could have been put in when whoever is behind it let fake Alice out? Wouldn't Matthew have seen it when he locked Alice in?

LarkDescending · 03/11/2016 12:12

Hmmm yes. Any nighttime swap must have been done very subtly as Sam and Gemma were awake talking in bed - then went to the window when Gemma noticed a strange light (the fire).

But I suppose if Matthew locked FakeAlice in, and she is alive and well in 2016, a swap must have been executed somehow.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/11/2016 12:19

have seen 4, with subtitles so dont miss anything vito

honestly, i havent a clue Grin

so henry paid money to that man for his guilt over his sister, could she have been raped and 3rd girl her daughter?

i thought if henry died 14th dec that the grave was done very quickly, (think was a good 3weeks death to funeral when dh died and not over xmas period)) plus how would alice known where he was buried and brought flowers (title of 4th episode)

tho its good tv and threads like these help me lots :)

LarkDescending · 03/11/2016 12:19

I just reminded myself of Baptiste's musings (in 2016 Iraq) at the end of Ep 1:

"When Alice Webster returned, I remember, people, they said - finally, she is free. Free as a bird, you know. I never understood that saying. People think birds are these free creatures, flying around without a care in the world - and yet they build their nests high up in the trees to protect themselves from predators. Nobody is free in this world.

That girl who came back, after all those years kept in a basement - she wasn't free when she left that place. She was still a prisoner. But, most importantly I believe, that girl was not Alice Webster."
