2 years ago a thread on Our Girl was started with these words ^Anyone watching this drivel?
although slightly enjoyed the family dynamics going on last night, unfortunately DD's favourite programme and in fact Guardian seems to recommend it^

40,000 posts, fireside wrestling contests, fan-fiction, autograph requests, carol concerts, CJ Grand Tours later we are about to watch the last episode of series 2. And that first post is a distant memory.

sorry my computer is being erratic and tetchy like me. Just wanted to say that TG and the BBC have the makings of a soap opera or a serious drama series in the people he created for Series 1, And it's true that the series only exists because of the phenomenal success of the original film, which was Molly's story.
No matter how good MK was in this second rate second series, Molly IS Our Girl, as far as I'm concerned.

Rhubarb01 · 06/10/2016 13:12

I assume series three will probably air next Autumn or that might be the plan. It will be interesting to see how all the new fans of OG for this series who started watching because of MK will react to another series particularly if they don't get LP back for it and whether they'll be as critical as we have been at times.

I think I've decided to simply think of the series 1 and 2 as completely different shows and enjoy them individually for what they are as they have quite different 'feels'. This is tough to say but I'd drop CJ and Two Section for series 3 and just go all out for a story about GL. However, there's room for Elvis Grin and possibly Dr Jamie but I don't think seriously his character could really forgive her for what she did. I think he'd better go to London and find Judy where she can console him with a finger buffet.

However, should TG want to write another show about CJ and Two Section separately, I'd happily watch that (as if he is possessed of infinite time to do both!). I think that could be quite entertaining - makes me think of 'Soldier Soldier' a bit.

Rhubarb01 · 06/10/2016 13:21

I think we're sort of saying the same thing Kuia. I wouldn't let the series one characters cross over any more than they already have. I know it was necessary this time but I think TG could go all out with quite an exciting story for GL with some strong messages about humanitarian relief, the politics and dangers etc now that he doesn't need the other characters involved.

However, I'd like there to be more about Two Section and by association CJ. Go on TG you know you want to write a new series for the lovely lads and call it "Our Boys".

kazzaD66 · 06/10/2016 13:39

Have just watched Ep 5 and am a bit underwhelmed but that's probably because I'm more of a CJ fan than OG in general. Some thoughts......
The Lane family not half as funny/interesting/well written as the Dawes clan.
No explanation as to the absence of Fingers.
Wedding dinner scene was a bit weird - CJ said 2 Section followed him (which is weird in itself....didn't know they stalked their captain!) but why was he invited anyway, if it was just for family? Didn't see an empty chair where he may have been sitting.
Good to see CJ wearing his wedding ring with his suit.
Shame no Molly appearance but wasn't expecting it anyway.
Loved the look on CJ's face when he was watching GL & EH on parade ground and loved him in the following scene with EH.
Glad GL chose neither bloke, didn't like either of them.
Would still have liked some explanation somewhere in S2 re why CJ changed his mind about resigning his commission.
I know the focus was all about GL/EH/Dr Dull this series but would have loved to have seen more of CJ and 2 Section. Some great banter at times, especially Fingers and CJ, but not enough. Just felt they were shoe horned in a lot of the time to give a bit of continuity and to keep certain ladies happy Blush , not that I was complaining whenever CJ showed up, even when it seemed completely incongruous that he should be there Grin
I can't believe CJ will turn up in S3. His presence was a bit gratuitous at times in S2 and I would assume he must be knocking on the door to promotion to Major, so even less of a plausible reason for him to be hanging around.

KeziaOAP · 06/10/2016 13:45

From something LT said think she would have been up for another series if the Beeb had made a decision in a short timeframe of series 1 finishing.

Thinking about last night's episode the conclusion was fairly obvious in that TG had stated he would like MK in another series so meant she would remain in the army.

Would love to see a series with Our Girls....... maybe waiting a long time [hmm ].

Reckon we were spoilt by s1 with the chemistry, not forgetting low slung combats didn't feel that with s2.

ourmutualfriend · 06/10/2016 14:20

I agree PollyPerky!

I understand that realism has to be compromised for a drama but like you, I didn't engage with the main characters and the plot felt weak. It was easy to suspend disbelief for the odd bit of Series 1 when the fab story was so gripping and you were really rooting for the characters.

'Feeling very indifferent to the prompt announcement of another series with GL. I don't admire her character enough and to string that hapless boyfriend along to the very last moment was not an enjoyable watch. I didn't care about either points in her love triangle, EH was selfish and quite cringeworthy at times. I wonder if a stronger story could make me care or if I just don't get the fuss with MK?

There were many excellent things about the first series: Molly's story, the music, the humour, the supporting characters etc, but above all- the seemingly effortless chemistry between MD/CJ. It's been painful at times to see him a mere shadow of the character we've known. Yes, I get that he's not the focus, but that doesn't mean I have to like it and I'm very sad that we may not see MD again.

Thank goodness for ff!

I think you're both right polly and friend about not engaging very much with the character of Georgie. We talk a great deal on here about the characters and why they do things in the story but I don't think the emotional involvement with the characters was so strong with this series if at all for some of us. I think the big difference for most of us with Series 1 was that a little piece (or in some cases a large piece) of us identified with Molly and how it would feel to be young, uncertain, trying to make your mark on life and unexpectedly falling in love with someone you didn't think you were good enough for and realising your feelings are returned. I've said it before but you just rooted for her from the start. Georgie's a different kettle of fish. I'm sure some people identified with her but I personally found it more difficult. I should have cared about her jilting Dr Dull or passionately wanted her to end up with Elvis but I didn't care as much as probably I should have done - even though I was willing to forgive him and wish him well. I'd like to see both of them again in series 3 but with no love triangles and a bit more depth to their relationship and characters so I care a bit more.

Firegirl · 06/10/2016 16:42

Wow, maddie and Nickel, I crashed out early last night and have only just logged back on and seen the pictures you posted. That's exactly the shot I meant, thanks! I think BAs next role should be one where he's constantly suited and booted, almost as good as the shaggy helmet.

Nickel45 · 06/10/2016 16:59

You've definitely hit the nail on the head there rhu - I didn't care about the characters or what happened. There was a tense two minutes when Abu had Georgie, but that was about it. When CJ was shot it was a horrible week, googling everything and wanting to know he was OK, counting the minutes days to the next ep. What was going to happen, how was Molly going to cope, etc. - I really wanted to know what was going to happen. Not had that this series at all. Hey ho - it's been nice to see BA on the screen, but can't really see what he, or 2 Section, was in it for, and if I'd only ever seen this series, I would not be bothered to watch him in anything else particularly.

kuiakaituhi · 06/10/2016 18:02

No sayings, words, memorable moments that are immediately recognisable...ditto,Rosabaya, Dave's pants, low slung combats, twirly finger, black shorts, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" etc etc

KeziaOAP · 06/10/2016 18:02

Did others notice CJ, when looking rather gorgeous in that suit, fiddling with his ring finger the only bit I've watched back Smile

cjwoofwoof · 06/10/2016 18:48

Ditto to all the feelings of flatness. Decompression is kicking in extremely rapidly here. S2 was total tosh.

Sad Sad Sad Sad

Rhubarb01 · 06/10/2016 19:49

I'm wondering if a binge watch of all 5 episodes would help? Perhaps it's been too disjointed a watch so far?

I think the character I'm struggling most with is actually Georgie. I think I 'get' Elvis to some extent and, yes, you all know I feel sympathetic to him and his plight - so I was glad that there was a glimmer of hope for him in the future even if Georgie let's him wallow in hospital while she swans off on her non-honeymoon - clearly she's not desperately bothered. I'm wondering if the reason we felt so much for Molly was because of the original one-off drama. That really gave us insight into her character and what she'd dealt with to get to where she was. If we hadn't seen that would we have felt the same about series1? Is that the problem we've got with series 2? We just don't have that, for want of a better word, 'relationship' with Georgie. I wonder if we might feel differently about her in series 3 because we will know her better by then. It could be a really great story about her especially if it's gritty, more overseas and a bit less soapy. I'm holding out some hopes here that we'll like it better.

Just one more casual observation - how old is Dr Jamie supposed to be? He seems remarkably well off for a 'junior' doctor, if he is, who has to work 14 hours shifts! Nice flat, Audi (kelly sorry it wasn't CJ's) and thinking of buying Wayne Rooney's pad! Is he some sort of genius or miles older than he looks?

kazzaD66 · 06/10/2016 20:12

Rhu I didn't see the one off programme before S1 (and still haven't ) and only caught on to S1 perhaps at Ep 4, can't remember now. So watched the first eps on iplayer, then got the DVD. I didn't need to see the one off for OG to grab me because the characters were so great, including those on the periphary, CJ /BA was to die for and he had such fantastic chemistry with MD /LT. Everyone had a reason for being there, interacted well with each other and you really cared about them. That's the difference between series 1 and 2.

kazzaD66 · 06/10/2016 20:40

Also, in S1, the story seemed to flow better, plus the soundtrack was brilliant. With S2, don't know if the difference was down to the writing, the actors or the director Hmm

ourmutualfriend · 06/10/2016 21:42

Yup, kazza, I'm another who actually hasn't seen the pilot. I 'know' the story but I suppose for me personally, the relationship between MD/CJ was the magical main draw, with molly's personal journey and interaction with 2 section adding more and more to love.

So, I would have to say, following Molly's story all the way from the pilot is not the reason I love her. I also agree with Nickel in that, if I hadn't seen series 1, of course I'd be noticing that CJ was a mighty fine looking man, but I can't imagine I'd be obsessing going out of my way to watch out for him.

ourmutualfriend · 06/10/2016 21:50

Infact, if I hadn't seen series one, I don't think I would have made it to episode 5 this time. I think it was only my being invested in the CJ character and a forlorn hope of a Molly cameo that kept me hanging on right to the very end of the credits last night.

Nickel45 · 06/10/2016 22:07

Still, it was a good way to spend a Wednesday evening :) and we are still talking about it, so not all bad!! And we are getting some good screen shots of CJ. Be interesting to see if there is any fanfic coming from S2, there are a couple of Molly and CJ ones which are pretty fab (thank you, if it's anyone on here) which have appeared recently.

Ilovelblue · 06/10/2016 22:21

Evening everyone.

Just washed up after my friend had been for her tea. We discussed last night's episode more than I expected to do but we are really on different levels and I had to shut up before I got too involved in it!

ice you'll be pleased to know that I put my signed photograph in a frame and left it on a side table. When my friend saw it, she said "Well is it a real signature?" I did have to smile to myself but I noticed her keep glancing at it when she thought I wasn't looking.

I had a lovely OG experience at lunchtime when I went to fill up with petrol. The two assistants were talking about soap operas so I was able to launch in with "Well, I've been watching OG...." etc and the younger of the two (bet she was only in her early 20s) was in absolute raptures about it. Obviously I didn't reveal the true extent of my investment in the series but it was interesting to talk to a fellow human being about it. I've not even tried to engage folk this time whereas last year I kept asking if people had watched it.

Rhubarb01 · 06/10/2016 22:22

I'm glad that some of you felt there was enough in series 1 by itself to draw in your interest. I think because I remembered the first drama so well (it really caught my attention when it was first screened and I watched it several times) I was already sold on series 1 before it started - the trailers helped too especially the 'forehead' moment that's when I noticed CJ! I'm still hanging onto the hope that series 3 will be good perhaps because it will be unhindered by the shadow of CJ/MD (although I love them!)

Nickel I've an idea for a story BUT as I said, I'm struggling with Georgie, I just don't think I know her very well and I hate to say it but I'm still getting a bit mixed up in my mind with....Corrie! I reckon some M rated stuff will appear - but it won't be me!

Ilovelblue · 06/10/2016 22:28

Rhu I thought the same as you about that house Dr Dull was thinking of buying! I'm guessing it would be somewhere around the Alderley Edge area and as Rich will now verify, it's pretty damn expensive round there. I did have at the back of my mind that he was heading towards becoming a consultant but I've no idea where I got that from. I thought consultants were usually around the 40 age bracket.

I do hope that with the overall less than enthusiastic reception this series has had, we don't end up fizzling out on here!!!

danTDM · 06/10/2016 22:53

Utter crap.

Olliepops05 · 06/10/2016 23:10

Finally watched ep 5 this evening and it was a big disappointment, series 2 has been awful, never thought I would ever say that about OG. Agree with everyone just feeling sad that two series could be so different. Still can't work out why series 3 gets announced immediately and series 2 had to wait for months. The BBC had no faith in series 1 never gave it the support it deserved, unlike series 2 which was always having endless write ups on FB and Instagram, two screenings etc, quite a few viewers on FB had no idea there was a S1. As for CJ and 2 section their roles were weak did not add much to the storyline, unlike S1 where all the characters worked well together, felt like they were in the series just to keep the S1 viewers happy.
Would have loved to seen MD in ep 5, not convinced TG really wants LT back, however still an enormous amount of love and support for LT to return to her role as MD.

Going to say this quietly, I think BA should move on from OG too good an actor to have such a minor role in S2, really hope BA gets a another series of fleabag and bags himself a lead role in another drama soon. Maybe it's time for me to move on from the world of OG, well actually CJ/MD world.

Rhubarb01 · 06/10/2016 23:25

Well ollie we've managed to carry on chatting here for two years and after the first four or five months a lot of the conversation was not about OG so I reckon we'll probably still be here next year when series 3 appears because we pretty much like chatting about anything, including lots of other dramas on TV. Everyone is welcome to stay on board even if you didn't enjoy this series too much. It was the enjoyment of series 1 that brought us all here in the beginning but we've broadened our horizons over time and I expect it won't be long before we're discussing recipes for Christmas cakes! Smile
