Because we can't wait until next year for season 3. Highbrow discussion of Jamie's knees, hair and anything else Outlander

Yy to Black Sails. Some very tasty chaps in it. Good story and I love all the at sea stuff. Plus they'll be using the same sets and scenery for Outlander. Its a bit gory at the start, but it sets the characters up.

quirkychick · 09/10/2017 16:22

I've only watched 2 episodes of Black Sails so far, so far so good.

I assume they cut out all the stuff about Jamie breaking his nose from the books as it was supposed to happen as he sent Claire through the stones, and they had missed that out in the show already. I liked the way they made it Christmas in Boston and tied up all the getting ready for Claire, much neater. You couldn't possibly make exciting episodes if you included all the extra details of the books into the show. I think my heart was pounding for the whole of the end of that episode.

ToniMumsnet · 09/10/2017 19:06

Yes, they did such a lovely job in Episode 5. And i thought Episode 4 was an emotional rollercoaster.

At least I have Black Sails for the break. Just finished the first season. Exciting stuff.

GreatWhites · 09/10/2017 19:35

Found the middle a bit boring, but I'm not into Brianna/Roger. Loved the Bat(wo)man sequence. I'm a UofG girl and love those cloisters, even if it was masquerading as Harvard.

But aaaaaawwwww the END. I was like a teenager Grin CB is gorgeous (and such a good actress). Poor Jamie keeling over in fright Grin Can't wait for next week!

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 09/10/2017 19:52

It was better on a second viewing, after I knew what the ending was like.

I thought the bit where Roger told Claire he’d found Jamie was brilliantly done. You could see how scared Claire was, making excuses not to go back. Loved the Batman/sewing scene, and the puddle. I’m so glad they didn’t prolong Claire going through the stones out.

And sorry, but I think the Bree & Roger scenes are important. The characters are a massive part of book 4 and this is a chance to build them up before the action switches back to the 18th Century. Oh, and did I mention I love RR as Roger? Wink

Waytoogo · 09/10/2017 19:55

Loved the ending, but a 99% Jamie-less episode was hard going.

I'm really only gripped by the Claire / Jamie love story and I found a lot of the Roger/Bri conversations were unconvincing and just padding out before the reunion.

On the other hand, I thought the encounter with the OW was clever. I don't remember it in the book. It gave a glimpse of how much Frank had sacrificed for Claire and cast him in a much more sympathetic light. It brought home Claire's selfishness in allowing Frank to sacrifice his life and happiness for her and Bri.

gamerwidow · 09/10/2017 20:03

As much as I sympathise with Frank Claire never made him stay and Sandy knew he was married and chose to stay his bit on the side anyway so it’s a bit rich bitching about it now.

Room101isWhereIUsedtoLive · 09/10/2017 20:19

Is it two weeks if watching on Amazon prime as well?
please say no, please say no-

GreatWhites · 09/10/2017 20:22

Neither Claire nor Frank were perfect, but I think Frank was more selfish. Even when Claire first came back she assumed they were split up. We've seen Claire tell Frank to get a divorce (as long as he didn't cite adultery). He said no because she'd take Brianna away from him.

She couldn't love him again but she'd seen Jamie Fraser on a horse so.

SeveredPixieBits · 09/10/2017 20:25

Ermagaaaaaaadd!! That ending! My heart was going like the clappers. Even DH had a little cry Grin

LonelyOversharer · 09/10/2017 20:34

Well I really liked the way they portrayed the ow bit. We saw Claire asking to split when Bree was little, Frank said no and kept on shagging ow. He was a twat. If a long term mistress came up to me and told me I was selfish I'd have punched her lights out. Thought Claire was pretty restrained. Fact was, like most cheaters he told each woman what he thought he could get away with. To Claie: I'm being discreet, this was all your idea, to ow: she won't let me divorce, she will take my child so I have to stay with her.

And I'm glad Bree found out, she doesn't in the books (only read to book 6 mind) and has Frank as some sort of hero. At least we all know what he was like.

Sod it, I'm going to have to watch it again and again

DryWhiteagainW · 09/10/2017 20:43

Thought I was going to pass out too Grin

Bloody brilliant stuff.

I cheered when Roger stepped out of the taxi in Boston.

I like SS but am a bit obsessed with her hair.......is it a wig?

A week off is no bad thing, will prolong the series, I always feel bereft when it ends and have to wait a year for the next one.

Loved it! But Claire didn't pack the photos Sad

quirkychick · 10/10/2017 07:32

I've been rereading Voyager and in the book the bit with the OW is that there are several (6 I think). When Frank says he's going off to England with Brianna, Claire tells him that 6 OWs (presumably over 20yrs) had come to her asking her to give him up and she'd told them Frank had never asked her to. The show portrays him in a better light, in that he has one long-term affair than a series of less important ones. Still not great.

Perhaps we will see the photos next episode? Love RR as Roger Smile. I was really wondering how they would fill out a whole episode with trying to find Jamie, but they have filled out the Claire and Frank parts really well. A lot of that relationship is in small flashbacks over the course of the books, good to see how much Claire has lost in going through the stones.

PenguinDi · 10/10/2017 08:29

I L.O.V.E Roger (almost as much as Jamie) in that episode I was rooting for him the whole way through the episode, I thought the way he revealed that Jamie’s alive was so brilliant. Although Brianna is starting to grate a little.

I think a re-watch is in order

Room101isWhereIUsedtoLive · 10/10/2017 08:30

According to the Radio Times, Outlander will be showing on Amazon Prime next Monday, so yay! And will be 75 minutes long!!!

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/10/2017 08:52

What?! We’re getting it first?

LonelyOversharer · 10/10/2017 08:59

room 101 no way!! That is very good news. I rewatched last night, and tried to explain to dp how a 2ww was unacceptable, turns out he doesn't care. The man is a heathen. He kept trying to unmute sodding family guy right at the end of the episode (I was watching on my tablet). This is grounds for ltb right?

RR is just lovely, Roger is clearly besotted with Bree, while she holds more power. Wether SS was right for the part or not she is very beautiful. They'll have to do something about the hair colour if they're to pass as father/daughter though, as Jamie is a bit ginger-orange in the print shop. I was hoping for thick luxurious hair a la series 1, but he was wearing straggly Hellwater wig?hair.

FridgeCut · 10/10/2017 09:03

Not getting my hopes up, I am assuming it is a mistake. I will be beside myself if I am expecting it and then it isn't on.www.radiotimes.com/news/2017-10-09/outlander-season-3-episode-6/ this seems to be thinking the US are getting it this week too?

Room101isWhereIUsedtoLive · 10/10/2017 09:06

Hope they have their facts straight!!

hudyerwheesht · 10/10/2017 09:08

I don't often come back to this thread as I haven't read the books so don't want any spoilers(and the no spoilers thread never kept going) but there's something that's bugging me - what was all that about with the bone fragments? It felt like it was building to something significant but nothing came of it- or did I miss the point in my frustration at the lack of progress of the reunion storyline. (Saw the preview and they made it look like The Reunion Episode but to me it felt like loads of padding to put the reunion in as a cliffhanger ending)

But what's this I read about a two week wait??

Also on a side note, Claire's hair was annoying me - the very obvious wig (could see the lace at the hairline)was almost black, then actually black after she did a Cher in Moonstruck and took out the greys but when she got to Edinburgh she had gone wig free and it was brown and curly again. I don't know why they didn't just use her real hair for the Boston episodes. And on the subject of hair/make up, why haven't they aged them at all? It's been 20 years and neither one seems to have gained so much as a wrinkle or a crow's foot?!
Apologies if the above has been covered already, as I said I don't look at this thread much these days.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/10/2017 09:23

The bones come into play later on. More than that I can’t remember say.

As for her hair, I’ve seen a preview of the next episode where she let’s it down and it’s past her shoulders! I don’t know why they gave her that daft 60’s wig.

quirkychick · 10/10/2017 11:17

I wondered why she would have dyed her hair to go back to the 18th century, she will hardly be able to keep it up!

The radio times link was fun, only one nitpick, Claire wasn't heavily pregnant when she went through the stones, she was barely sure she was. Though, it appears she will bring the photos.

AKAmyself · 10/10/2017 11:58

Episode 6 now available on iTunes, I hope I'll find some time to watch tonight!!!

hudyerwheesht · 10/10/2017 12:30

Ooh interesting about the bones - especially as they are in America and the story is now going back to Scotland. ConfusedI guess the book readers here will know, don't tell me, I'd rather wait and find out.

I think she dyed her hair so that she wouldn't look that different/older when she first turns up and finds Jamie, seems like she was having a crisis of confidence, hence the "am I attractive?" conversation with the other doc.

Pipsqueaked · 10/10/2017 12:53

I love Outlander normally but I was just annoyed by that episode. Claire comes across as really selfish and uncaring. Who would leave their young daughter for a man who she hasn't seen in 20 years? Even if he is the utterly gorgeous Jamie. And why not once did anyone discuss the possibility of Bree going through the stones with her?
I'm a book behind the series so don' know how it's played in the books.
