Because we can't wait until next year for season 3. Highbrow discussion of Jamie's knees, hair and anything else Outlander

Think there might have been a petition for Karen Gillan to get the part around the end of S1. She would’ve been perfect, tbh.

I’m sure I read an interview that Roger and Sophie had already been cast by the time Series 1 ended though. Apparently it was an 18 month process.

Found it. Richard Rankin interview

ToniMumsnet · 07/10/2017 13:57

I love the idea of Karen Gillan.

What about Lily Cole? Although she's probably not tall enough.

quirkychick · 07/10/2017 13:59

Courtney glad I'm not alone in thinking that. We'll just have to see how Brianna pans out in Season 3 and 4,I suppose. The geek in me likes the Dr Who connection too Grin.

Lessstressedhemum · 07/10/2017 14:28

Think Sam is 6'3", so of RR is 6ft, that's about right. See, I like the idea of Bree being giant, perhaps because I am short. How will Laoghaire mistake her for j. If she is short?

AKAmyself · 07/10/2017 15:11

Brianna in the book is a (us) size 16. So literally a giant

Whatthefoxgoingon · 07/10/2017 16:43

I've caught up with you all series wise, hello! Wine

Speaking of casting, in my head Claire always looked like a young Madeline Stowe. I thought the actress who played Geneva would have made a very good Claire actually.

The actress who plays Brianna is far too short (she's shorter than Claire) and no striking features. Why on earth did they cast her? Terrible Boston accent too. Karen gillan would have been a much better choice.

SH and LJG, Jenny and Ian perfectly cast. I had Roger as more angular and taller in my head, but the actor is very sweet. I have high hopes for older Fergus, he'd better be handsome!

GreatWhites · 07/10/2017 16:47

I loved the white sow! Hope she appears.

And Adso and Clarence. I love all the sarcastic references to the demonic pig. Hope they translate well.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 07/10/2017 16:48

Brianna looks like Christina hendricks in my head... I've made up my own fantasy cast Grin

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 07/10/2017 16:55

A little teaser from next episode apparently...

Whatthefoxgoingon · 07/10/2017 16:57

He looks 2 years older, not 20 I'm not complaining

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 07/10/2017 17:19

Ah but look, what He has a pair of specs tucked into his waistcoat to indicate that he’s now an old duffer.

Actually I bet SH isn’t far off the age Jamie is supposed to be in that pic even though SH has been 36 for the last four years.

GreatWhites · 07/10/2017 17:20

What age are they supposed to be at the printshop?

Jamie was 25 (I think) at Culloden in 1746. He/ SH looked really young in the first two episodes then seemed to age overnight Grin Was Claire 30 at Culloden?

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 07/10/2017 17:28

I think they’re in their 40’s. Claire is slightly older than Jamie.

Just looked it up. Jamie is 46 and Claire is 50? That doesn’t seem right though. In one of the later books Claire says something about Jamie maybe wanting to have another child when she came back through the stones. She’d have been a medical marvel having a baby naturally in her 50’s, although maybe she was thinking of inventing IVF, along with sanitary towels and antibiotics Wink

GreatWhites · 07/10/2017 17:39

DG's own mental maths isn't great, doesn't help trying to work out their ages. Jamie's brother dies when he was 6, 7 and 8 depending on which book you read Confused

I always just assumed the baby part to be a bit of wishful thinking about the family she really desperately wanted with Jamie. He always wanted thousands of bairns running wild.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 07/10/2017 22:06

While it made sense that Jamie would send Claire back through the stones since he's bound to die at Culloden, really DG missed a trick by depriving her 2 main characters of 20 years of bonking during their sexual peak

gamerwidow · 08/10/2017 07:46

Greatwhites I love the characterisation of all the animals in the book but especially Gideon who is always doing his absolute best to make Jamie look stupid. Jamie prides himself on his horsemanship and Gideon doesn’t listen to a word he says Grin

quirkychick · 08/10/2017 08:42

There's a teaser for Episode 6 for the reunion on YouTube, sorry on tablet and can't link. It says it's an extended episode Grin. I have obviously watched quite a few Outlander vids on YouTube as I now get notifications as soon as they are released Blush.

AKAmyself · 08/10/2017 08:50

Initially I thought so too, but as I kept reading I actually started to love their middle-aged sex life. In many ways they have greater intimacy and fewer inhibitions. Not to mention the fact that if they'd been sexual partners during Claire's childbearing years, she would have been constantly pregnant and breastfeeding (in other words she'd have been Brianna, and we know how well that turned out!) so nowhere near as interesting.

I also found the reference to having children ridiculous given her age. In one of the later books, after a particularly harrowing ordeal, Jamie actively considers that possibility - I think by then Claire would be in her mid-fifties!

I found that the best way to address the age question is simply to more or less ignore it and not try to get too precise. They reunite when they're both in their mid-forties, more or less :)

I was watching my dance teacher yesterday, who is I think at least 50, has wild curly brown hair, beautiful blue eyes and an amazing body, and i thought - yep, totally believable!

AKAmyself · 08/10/2017 08:54

spoilery spoiler ahead

One thing that i've been wondering about is how they will deal with L. I so hated that part in the book, not so much the fact that L would reappear in the way she reappeared, but the whole way everyone from Jennie to Jamie behaved so out of character. I hated that DG made Jennie into a villain and I hated how OTT the whole thing played out.

Unfortunately, a lot of those shenanigans have to occur to justify future plot developments, but really really hope they fix it somehow, like they did with Geneva.

AKAmyself · 08/10/2017 09:03

thanks quirkychick!

that teaser isn't exactly subtle is it :) Looks like they have gone for a replay of the wedding night. I know it is literally seconds of screen time but my first reaction was OMG Claire is so formal and stiff, and they both look awfully solemn. Hope there will be nuances (humour, tears, etc) and they won't just play it out as the soft porn that we've all been waiting for

mateysmum · 08/10/2017 09:06

Claire was born in 1918 and Jamie I think in 1721 or thereabouts.

quirkychick · 08/10/2017 09:20

AKA I 'm just rereading Voyager and about to start the "Edinburgh" section. In the book the reunion is quite awkward, so I'm wondering what licence they will take on the show, perhaps more like the Wedding episode Grin.

I always think they have such a passionate love life after they've missed 20yrs, longing for each other, being lonely, so there's no chance of taking each other for granted and it conveniently by passes all the drudge and everyday of pregnancy, breastfeeding, crying babies etc.

snozzlemaid · 08/10/2017 10:18

Just seen the promo for 306 if that’s what you’re talking about.
Can’t contain my excitement if they’ve essentially redone the wedding episode. Will love to look out for the similarities.

ToniMumsnet · 08/10/2017 11:28

I'm going to have to rewatch the wedding episode now.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 08/10/2017 11:30

I may or may not have watched Episode 5 Wink

Not going to say anything til everyone else has seen it. All I will say is that I can’t believe they’re making us wait two week for episode 6!!
