I really tried to love the books books. Really, really tried. The same way I really, really tried to love the Lord of Rings books.

But too much detail in both turned off. Need to move it along.

Also his sentence construction at times is just so convoluted. Really irritating.

WeDoNotSow · 17/06/2016 23:27

Aww, how could you not like LoTR?

The one I found I really had to plod to get through was the Northern Lights series with Lyra and her daemon? It felt really clunky to me,

EverySongbirdSays · 17/06/2016 23:28

I lost it with Dark Tower during Wizard and Glass as so much of it were things we didn't really need to know.

The Gunslinger (Book 1) is a genuinely great book Book 2 and 3 are poorly written so I gave up with Wizard mainly for reasons that are spoilers but because of it being a prequel in the middle of a series IYSWIM

His Dark Materials!

EverySongbirdSays · 17/06/2016 23:30

I need to read His Dark before the big BBC version

OP posts:
WeDoNotSow · 17/06/2016 23:35

I concede, it wasn't a huge disappointment he didn't make the cut when it came to the film version!

Ooh, I didn't even know HDM was getting a BBC version! I'll definitely watch that!

boilingkettle · 17/06/2016 23:54

When is the BBC version out???? I LOVED HDM and nearly called DD1 Lyra.

Mansplaining is when a man thinks that his opinions have more weight or his knowledge is superior because he is a man.

He may not explicitly think this or be aware of thinking it, but his experience as a man has led him to believe that he is worth listening to.

If someone thinks that they are worth listening to because they are the author, I'd say they have a point.

Therefore I disagree.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 18/06/2016 09:28

I'm reading HDM right now! Just started Book 2. Yay that they're making a series!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/06/2016 09:38

I love LOTR, gave up on the Dark Tower after Wolves of the Calla, and also found His Dark Materials clunky. I just didn't find Lyra that appealing. But I will watch the BBC adaptation anyway!

With the Dark Tower, I found The Gunslinger a bit meh and teenagery, loved books 2 and 3 and bits of Wizard and Glass, but didn't like Susan, and then just got bored by book 5. Then my sister read the rest and I got her to tell me how it ends and I was infuriated by the crapness.

MaterofDragons · 18/06/2016 09:39

Why do people think Howland Reed might be the High Sparrow? Is there something in the books alluding to that?

I loved HDM! Couldn't bring myself to watch The Golden Compass as I can't stand Nicole Kidman. Can't STAND her.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 18/06/2016 09:45

I think that GRRM has no clue how it is all going to work out, and spends his days cobbling together the best bits of fan theories while telling his publisher 'I'm DOING it - now leave me alone'. The last line will be 'and then Bran woke up. Catelyn was calling him for breakfast. It had all been a dream!'

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/06/2016 09:47

YES! I also cannot stand Nicole Kidman!

MaterofDragons · 18/06/2016 09:55

On the few unfortunate occasions I have been forced to watch her I end up shouting at the screen "stop simpering and speak up!"

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 18/06/2016 09:56

The golden compass film was a huge disappointment. While there were some good elements, it was style over substance and Nicole Kidman was horrendous.

I don't think arya is the waif in disguise. The face was ragged and dripping blood - we don't know what happens to faceless men but I'm pretty sure they still keep their original face. I can't imagine the waif carving off her own face to replace it with arya's. If she had killed arya she would have the use of her face for sure but that wouldn't explain the mangled waif face on the wall.

AliceInHinterland · 18/06/2016 10:06

HS = HR here for example

AliceInHinterland · 18/06/2016 10:12

I don't even like the theory that much - feel a bit silly now.
I am gutted (no pun intended, or really achieved) that the Arya storyline might be as simple as it seems. I hate that she miraculously recovers from her stomach sounds in the care of the comically 'tough' lady Crane who is forever stabbing people and patching them up. I hate that the waif did not wait to see her coming out of the river but was still tracking her down for some reason. I hate that Arya really was all weird and jaunty on the day she got stabbed (similar to PP saying they felt like the building of the sept scene was LOTR, it felt like a different show).
It had better get very clever, very soon.

MaterofDragons · 18/06/2016 10:17

Thanks for the link Alice. Interesting theory but I'm not buying it.
But blimey, Arthur Dayne is gorgeous! How did I miss that?

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 18/06/2016 10:34

Indeed. I'm desperately hoping there is a clever twist to the arya waif story because if not - it's shit and not worthy of grrm's storytelling tbh. As close as fan fiction to the real thing. I don't believe arya is dead, but I hope there is more to it than we have seen so far.

Middleoftheroad · 18/06/2016 10:35

Mater I agree re Howland Reed.

Surely Cersei and Jaime met him back in the day? Surely he ventured into KL with his BFF Ned at some point and residents of KL would have recognised him when he shows up barefoot in Nana's piss stained gown 20 years on?

AliceInHinterland · 18/06/2016 11:07

Mater he is rather! More flashbacks please.
Middle yes it does have lots of holes in the logic, I'm sure the Lannisters would recognise him.

MissMoo22 · 18/06/2016 11:26

Maybe GRRM didn't want to tell the show producers what exactly he was doing with the Arya storyline because he's fucked off that they are ruining the reveals that he wants for the books so the show had to just wrap up her storyline and send her home. I'd be a bit pissed if I was GRRM, the first few seasons of GoT were some of the best TV I have ever watched but this past season has honestly been a bit shit and I don't think I'll feel the same about having to wait a year to see a new episode like I did last year if they don't pull some fucking amazing cliffhangers out of the bag.

I don't give a shit about Bran at this point, I never liked Meera anyway but Uncle Benjen might be an interesting addition.
Jon's storyline is a little.....off? He seems even more dour this season and like he couldn't be bothered to do things. He needs a rocket up his arse and a personality transplant at the minute. And I am really afraid for the outcome of BotB.

Sansa's storyline is ok at the minute but I have a feeling she's going to cross the line between being cold to protect herself and being cold to be a bitch in the next few episodes/seasons. And that her feeling that Jon is 'just' her bastard brother is still very strong with her.
Littlefinger.....fuck off, your games are old now and I wish someone would find out that you are the cause of EVERY FUCKING THING. You little wormy shit.
Dany, ruining it all with her fucking about in Mereen. Get on with it Dany, get to Westeros and play the game properly.
Iron Islands, don't really mind it at the minute. Just hoping it doesn't take over too much of the main show and hope Yara and Theon do some good.
Dorne...Who gives a shit?
King's Landing, always one of my favourite places to see in the show, a lot is usually happening round there. Would actually like to see Queen Margaery win this thing with Cersei.
The White Walkers, I am probably one of the only people who wish they weren't in the show at all. I'd quite happily just watch the show for the fight for the Throne (or Thrones, if we include the Iron Islands own throne and the North etc) and house politics etc, I just find the whole Idea of the White Walkers a little annoying.

So (after all my rambling up there) what I mean is, the show has gone from having me hooked to nearly every storyline and caring about who does what/goes where to one where things just seem to be thrown in to make an hour of TV and not trying to move on. Like Arya training for how long just for that?? Fuck off. Dany wanting to go to Westeros for years yet keeps traipsing round conquering cities and never getting close to actually leaving. She had a massive unsullied army and the other one (Darrio's army) yet some masked twats managed to wipe out the majority of them or worse still....those massive armies just weren't good enough to beat the Sons of the Harpy even though they don't seem to have any sort of army only a few masked men popping up randomly.

Come oooooon GoT, not many episodes left (and worse that next season is only 7 episodes) and you're still fucking about with characters and storylines that no-one gives a shit about!

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 18/06/2016 11:51

I remain optimistic that the last two episodes were filler in order to big up the mindblown factor of BOTB.
