Genuine question actually. I only lasted about 15 minutes until the endless sex, ugly men and confusing "plot" got too much. This programme has been made by a French channel in English for goodness knows what kind of audience, and the BBC was dumb enough to buy it.

It's so entertaining. I've loved this period since reading all the Jean Plaidy books as a teenager - in fact, I wouldn't mind revisiting them now 🙂

It's drivel but Athelstan is so so SO gorgeous, I'll put up with it just to ogle him

I really like it. The costumes, the comic bits (rarely) , the choreography.

Anyone know if there's going to be a series 2? For a start, the Palace isn't even finished yet and Louis only seems to be getting into his stride as potential King of the World.

DD now refers to Louis as Louis the Phwoarteenth, or 'fitty-boy', I'm preferring Phillipe as a character - more depth. But I'm definitely with you Fabien lust-afterers - especially after seeing that pic of him upthread - Gosh!

There is a second series set 4 years later.... I'm not sure if already made, or being made now? I'll have a google.....

Visited Versailles a couple of weeks ago, so must have just missed them .

We stayed on for the outdoor show in the evening and the theme was 'The Fire King'. Now I thought it was a bit strange as he was 'The Sun King' surely. It was as though they changed his name to fit around the show which featured lots of fireworks, spectacular flamey things going off all along the roof of the palace and people dressed in costumes like the Cybermen off of Dr Who, who wore headdresses of spinning fireworks. Amazingly spectacular (but a bit weird) (maybe I didn't get it cos I'm an oik as I lost something in translation?)

I almost know who everyone is now too. I don't love it but it's definitely grown on me.

It's pretty fluff with some sex and murder thrown in and sometimes that's exactly what you need.

I really like character of Phillipe. Couldn't stand him at first but I've grown fond of him and vampire-ish look.

Those asking, series 2 has just wrapped. If you look or like the 'Versailles' canal page on FB they posted a series two wrap pic of the cast yesterday. I'm already trying to decipher who is still there! Based on real life facts, quite a few key people will pop their clogs if it's set over the next 4/5 years.....

Giving Versailles a little bump. just to say that I prefer Philippe (or Alexander Vlahos) to Louis. The treatment of Phillipe by his king brother is historically correct.

I'm a Phillipe fan too.

I think Phillipe would make a most excellent Doctor Who.
