Versailles - it was shit wasn't it?

Genuine question actually. I only lasted about 15 minutes until the endless sex, ugly men and confusing "plot" got too much. This programme has been made by a French channel in English for goodness knows what kind of audience, and the BBC was dumb enough to buy it. Confused

Ah right I see. Thanks.

CeciliaMiddleton · 08/06/2016 12:38

Genuinely terrible! But this review was hilarious - so kind of made it worth while www.culturewhisper.com/r/article/versailles_bbc2_review/7181

Woodhill · 08/06/2016 15:51

It was hard to follow and a bit grim. All the men seemed to have long straggly hair and thin moustaches. Didn't like the violence, prefer not to know or see it but like the history items.

BeJayKayven · 08/06/2016 21:06

I love the opening song though.

Here we go....

colouringinagain · 08/06/2016 21:23

Hmmm not much change this week!

BeJayKayven · 08/06/2016 21:58

Does that story have historical accuracy, did the Queen have a black baby by her dwarf fool?

BeJayKayven · 08/06/2016 22:38

Thank you! It answered all the questions in my head. 👍
I am greatly entertained by this programme 😀

Stripyhoglets · 09/06/2016 00:18

I loved it, just watched both episodes and loved it. The dreamy decadent feel to it - soundtrack music is wonderful too!

ProfYaffle · 09/06/2016 00:21

I found The Real Versailles far more interesting.

EnidButton · 09/06/2016 01:54

Just finished watching on iplayer. I still can't decide. I'll stick with it because of what Flipp and Wasting said about it getting better after the first couple of episodes.

I think my main issue is with the actor playing the King. His delivery seems so weak. Maybe it's intentional I don't know but somethings missing. That and the weedy little moustaches.

Who was the man cast from court? Why was he thrown out?

I usually find things very easy to follow but bits of this have lost me. Why is the guy who nearly drowned the baby so nasty? What's his motive?

EnidButton · 09/06/2016 01:54

I do like the opening credits.

CremeBrulee · 09/06/2016 02:15

Another one who thought it was awful here. I watched the first 15 minutes with DH and then we gave up - he hated it. I watched the rest of the episode a couple of days later when he was out.

It was very strange, and the final bit of the birth scene was really bizarre. Are we supposed to assume the dwarf jester is the father?

ArgyMargy · 09/06/2016 08:34

Thanks people - I caught the last 10 mins of last night's episode and I'm tempted to stick with it after what's been said here. Someone was on woman's hour talking about it and apparently the queen may well have had a black baby that was hushed up. I agree the actor playing the King is a bit rubbish, which really doesn't help. I also watched a bit of the "discussion" afterwards - delightfully bonkers stuff; this is why I love the BBC!!

Yes, it does have a dreamy, trippy quality, doesn't it? As if it's not quite real.

The sleazy looking bloke who got banished from court is called Montcourt - because he laughed at the king's brother for wearing a dress to a 'do.

The cross dressing bisexual brother (Monsieur) is accurate BTW and in fact they've probably toned it down a bit. He was notorious.

I know what you mean about the actor who plays the king Enid. I keep thinking Athelstan every time I see him Grin.

Magicpaintbrush · 09/06/2016 09:52

After the King's henchmen chopped that man's hand off that was it for me. Turned it off. Vom.

Why has the BBC picked up this 'Versailles' crap-fest but not 'Outlander', which is far far superior and has a British cast also?

PamBagnallsGotACollage · 09/06/2016 09:56

I watched a bit of this. All the blokes looked like undergrads in cheap fancy dress shop wigs at a freshers week costume party. With weird, creepy little moustaches.

And then we were supposed to believe all these women would want to have sex with them.

EnidButton · 09/06/2016 12:46

Flipp Oh of course! I recognise him now. It's the hair. They all have the same hair.

I was having to go off hair condition to try and tell some of them apart last night. Confused The King clearly use some fancy Aveda or Philip Kingsley stuff on his hair. His best friend/advisor uses fairy liquid by the look of it.

flippinada · 09/06/2016 13:17

Ha ha, yes they do Enid! I like the idea they're on a sliding scale from Aveda (poshos) to Fairy Liquid (normal folk) Grin.

Travelledtheworld · 11/06/2016 07:28

Yes Making Judy the bloody rags got me a bit baffled too. I thought the bloody menstrual rags belonged to various women around the court who the King (?) was shagging ? Don't understand why they hadn't been washed though. I assumed the tired woman was running the laundry, but also spying on all the women ?

I'm hanging on in with Versailles because it is so bizarre.

EnidButton · 11/06/2016 15:31

It's got one more chance with me and then I'm out. There doesn't seem to be any passion it in if that makes sense. No matter what Louis says he sounds like he's saying what he'd like for breakfast. So dull.

CremeBrulee · 11/06/2016 16:33

Hmm second episode definitely much better than the weird first one. Quite liking the Louis and Philippe actors and the relationship between this characters. Jury is still out here.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 11/06/2016 23:07

I like it - and the theme song is excellent.

Very dreamy quality to it and I think I will get more into it as the series continues and the characters are fleshed out more and more.

EnidButton · 11/06/2016 23:10

Yes I do like the theme music and the opening titles. I think that's what sucked me in initially actually. That and the drama sequence was good. Minus the tits. I think I was hoping for another Tudors. Trashy but with heaps of drama and passionate delivery. This is a bit wet so far.

And yet I keep harping on about on here. Blush

EnidButton · 11/06/2016 23:11

Drama sequence = dream sequence.
