Versailles - it was shit wasn't it?

Genuine question actually. I only lasted about 15 minutes until the endless sex, ugly men and confusing "plot" got too much. This programme has been made by a French channel in English for goodness knows what kind of audience, and the BBC was dumb enough to buy it. Confused

Ssh. Don't ruin the theory. Grin Maybe it'll fall off and be revealed as a wig.

Ooh. Or maybe not. Hello Blush

Rohan was a bad'un in real life and came to a sticky end. Google 'Rohan du chevalier' if you want to know what happened.

Athenaise was the lady in waiting to henriette prior to being mistress -en-titre (I think) which would explain the sadness; they would have been close?

If you're all missing it and want a fix then the historically correct book, then 'Love and Louis xiv' by Antonia Fraser is a good read.

Just saw this posted on Digital spy......

Alexander Vlahos can next be seen on 'Barbarians Rising' as Roman Emperor Valentinian. It airs on The History Channel on 31st August.

EnidButton · 11/08/2016 22:29

Is that sky? We only have digital as I watch mainly iplayer and Netflix these days.

youngestisapsycho · 11/08/2016 22:46

It's on Sky, Virgin, Bt TV, or Talk talk....

lovelybangers · 11/08/2016 23:32

Just watched the final episode.

It was the most action packed episode yet!

Brilliant.

EnidButton · 12/08/2016 00:04

Youngest Thanks. Don't have any of those. Perhaps Netflix will pick it up eventually. Smile

troglodite · 12/08/2016 11:33

Wasn't that last episode just fabulous. Totally agree about the guards - FFS Louis or Fabien just call for the guards outside the door! My DP couldn't quite work out what was happening during the Montcourt/Louis/Marchal fight as he said all he could see was long hair bouncing around (I could tell though - Montcourt has the greasy hair!)

The second series is being picked up by the BBC- goodness knows how long we will have to wait to see it eben though filming has wrapped and the American Ovation channel is showing it from Ocober.

Antonia Fraser's book is on my reading wish list. I have read one about Marie Antoinette, very interesting! Also Alexander Dumas's book I 've read in childhood is devoted to this time - Vicomte de Bragelonne. It is very romanticised though, nobody is having sex but a lot of flirting. The main protagonist (Young Viscount, son of Athos) is in love with Loise de La Valiere, who was chosen to be a decoy to cover up Henriette's and Loius's affair.

BeJayKayven · 12/08/2016 23:31

I'm going to miss them... ☹️

EnidButton · 13/08/2016 15:10

Was the beautiful Alex Vlahos in Merlin? Perhaps I need to give that another try.

Badders123 · 13/08/2016 15:26

I would also recommend "the sun King" by Nancy Mitford.

Flumplet · 13/08/2016 19:34

On the back of this series I've been to Versailles today and it was absolutely stunning. Instead of wafting around elegantly like the women on the series, I flumped about sweatily in 30 degree scorching sunshine and it was ram packed with people, but it was fantastic.

Oh flump Envy Envy

EnidButton · 14/08/2016 01:26

Wow Flump That looks amazing!

lovelybangers · 14/08/2016 09:51

Lovely :)

youngestisapsycho · 15/08/2016 10:19

That does look amazing... I went to Peterhof palace in St Petersburg, that was built based on Versailles. It was beautiful, just about everything was gold.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 15/08/2016 10:24

I've read the Dumas book, it's about the Necklace Affair, wan't it?

Zhabr · 15/08/2016 22:03

The necklace (or some kind of jewellery) affair is in The Three Musketeers. Then Dumas wrote 20 years later and then 10 years later or Vicomte de Bragelonne.
BTW, anyone else is enjoying MonChevy videos on YouTube? Alexander Vlahos mentioned it in his interview.

AmazingDisgrace · 25/08/2016 17:08

I loved it too, I'm so excited that we're getting a second series. Am also a devoted Philippe lover swoon
