I thought I loved it but a recent re-read almost had me viewing as EA what happens to Clare, on so many levels.

I thought it romantic when young, now tweak it a bit and it's a psychological horror.

Do I have to read Time Traveller's Wife to understand Branception properly?

EverySongbirdSays · 24/05/2016 19:00

I'd watch Inception to understand Branception!!!

Read TTW

and watch an episode of LOST called 'Whatever Happened, Happened' and an episode of Doctor Who called 'The Girl Who Waited'

Do we think Bran could actually change things if it was Branception?

Harry Potter and the prisoner of azkaban changed the outcome of their story.

In the original buckbeak died and Sirius got kissed. Harry and hermionie go back, save buckbeak and save Sirius.

I actually haven't seen the TV series of Outlander. Gosh, psychological horror? That's a bit harsh... But it's not Jamie's fault - he just tries to protect Claire because they're going to variously imprison her or burn her as a witch or turn her over to not-Frank, whatshisname...Randall? No, that's their surname, isn't it? Do you mean that she develops Stockholm syndrome and imprints on Jamie? But what about the later books where she chooses to go back to him and is still deliriously happy all the time? I do love the scene where she walks into the printer's shop after 20 years apart and he thinks she's a ghost. The later books are pretty shite, though - what are the chances that 3 out of the 4 main characters get raped? And I hate Brianna with a passion. I forget what happens at the very end of the series because the last book was so dire.

TheNorth, I'm going to say yes, on the basis that Time Traveller's Wife is excellent and you should read it just because.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/05/2016 19:12

Need, they don't exactly change things in Prisoner of Azkaban. They assume Buckbeak is dead because they hear a thud of an axe. This is later revealed to be Macnair swinging it about in rage because Buckbeak has escaped...because Harry saved him, which he wouldn't have done if he hadn't gone back in time, but he had to, because he did. Grin And Sirius isn't kissed either - he is locked in a room waiting for the Dementors, but by the time they get there, the cupboard is bare. Then Harry's Patronus saves them all, because he hadn't seen his father, he had seen himself, so he knew he could do it because he'd already done it. Grin Grin

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/05/2016 19:15

The only examples I can think of where someone's actions actually change history are Back To The Future, Making History by Stephen Fry, and 1963 by Stephen King, both of which latter come to the conclusion that if you change history, you make everything much worse and so the actual course of events are the best possible course.

NeedACleverNN · 24/05/2016 19:19

Huh......I guess your right Smile

JeepersMcoy · 24/05/2016 19:37

I hated the time travellers wife. I think the whole relationship is aweful. She basically spends half her life being faithful to a guy who hasn't actuallymet her yet. The only time she sleeps with someone else she feels wretchedly guilty about it and apologises. The whole business of him grooming her from when she is a child is a bit creepy. I also just don't think it is a particularly good time travel story. You should watch Primer . It will make your brain implode and makes inception look simplistic. :o

Anyway, sorry for the slight diversion. Back to business!

TheNorthRemembers · 24/05/2016 19:42

I have seen Inception and liked it, but can't say it changed my life (or even remember other than some very vague impressions). Have bought TTW recently, just haven't got round to reading it. I will this weekend. Thank you. (Not overinvested in ASOIAF at all, haven't I just said I'll give up on it if it is all Branception?)

EverySongbirdSays · 24/05/2016 19:46

No, No, No, Cheddar

Psychological horror = Time travellers Wife

Groomed young, frequently abandoned, constantly alone, many miscarriages, constantly caring for him, feels guilty about any resentment/attraction to others. Forced to watch daughter have same ability/illness and live out many lonely years as a widow where he only visits their daughter and never her.

I've not read Outlander yet Cheddar that's why I was asking jeez spoilers Grin Grin

OK, I have checked. I have not seen Inception, but it really seems like a glitzy rip-off of the Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Murakami Haruki. Primer looks good, too.

EverySongbirdSays · 24/05/2016 19:51

Never saw/heard much use of "invested" pre-Mumsnet and now I loves it as a word.

In my humble opinion, one cannot be too invested in ASOIAF North Grin

I LOVE how you've put that surname first (Murakami) Grin

SerJorahsSecondChoice · 24/05/2016 20:20

Thanks for the explanations guys. I'm still a bit confused, but time travel stories fuck me right up.

I have to say I'm really not liking the Iron Island bits. I think Euron is awful - no where near as badass as in the books. Yara/ Asha annoys me too. Every line she has she says like she's a very important actress doing a classical, breathy Shakespeare recital and reading very important words rather than actually speaking like a normal human speaks. Too actressy, not real enough. In the books she's so utterly cool and quick witted(and witty) but in the show it feels so much like a 'very important reading of a classic work.' Winds me up and takes all the life out of the character.

EverySongbirdSays · 24/05/2016 20:52

The Yara actress is in the Shakespeare thing on BBC 2 - so that's inadvertant nail head hitting for you. Grin

It bothers me why I remember the very last scene from Inception, but nothing else.

EverySongbirdSays · 24/05/2016 22:21

It's been referenced in a lot of movie type shows, clip shows, award shows, I saw it on something only recently, I can't remember what. A YouTube video I think.

Just realised I am watching game of thrones, while wearing a GoT shirt and crocheting a GoT blanket. Too much geek or just right?

This episode has sent my crush on tormund out of control. He was barely in it, but my heart's aflutter. Blush

RJnomore1 · 24/05/2016 22:44

What's the last inception scene? Is it the coin? thought the whole thing was a load of tosh I'll be royally peed off if got turns out like that.

Now, tell me about this blanket that is being crocheted?

toriap2 · 24/05/2016 22:50

It is the major house sigils and mottos the GoT logo, the nights watch sigil and the wierwood tree. Finished the nights watch, on to the Lannisters. My aim is to try and finish before the series ends lol
