QUITE, QUITE SURE? YOU REALLY WANT TO DISCUSS SERIES 6, EPISODE 2?

OK. I think that should be enough.

Right. R B - greatest TV villain of all time? I didn't see that coming!

OP posts:

So, I've done a bit of googling and it seems that Ned's older brother Brandon also believed that Rhaegar had abducted Lyanna. That's why he stormed into King's Landing and demanded that Rhaegar come out and face him, leading to Brandon's arrest and nasty death.

So who knows what to believe? They say that history is written by the victors, and in this case they've certainly confused the issue!

NutellaLawson · 06/05/2016 23:28

Isn't it the case that the mad King was killed by Jaime because he was burning entire villages with wildfire.

Was he mad or was he just trying to 'flush out' a true targareon (who would be impervious to fire, like daenerys is). A clumsy way of finding rhaegar's son, perhaps.

CaptainWarbeck · 06/05/2016 23:38

I thought Robert definitely 'knew' Jon Snow was Ned's, because wasn't he going on a massive Targaryen killing rampage to ensure that there were none left who could challenge his new position on the Iron Throne? If he'd known that there was a child/children Jon would definitely not have been allowed to go off and live at Winterfell.

I wonder why Howland Reed is mentioned specifically as being the only man to leave the Tower of Joy alive with Ned. He must know about Jon's real parentage too, and have known all Jon's life. I can't see why he specifically would be mentioned there unless that was an important plot point ie he's either going to vouch for Jon's parentage somehow OR he took a child too and raised her as his own ie Meera Reid.

Back to Robert for a sec, I thought he was really in love with Lyanna and married Cersei after she died as a political move despite there not being much love in that match. If Robert knew that Lyanna Stark had broken her betrothal to him to run away with a Targaryen, maybe that would have put his relationship with the Starks under pressure? I can see Ned concealing the elopement and the child for political reasons.

I love Ned.

EverySongbirdSays · 06/05/2016 23:38

Timeline wise I think things happen in this order :

Thoughts of rebellion gather in Westeros due to King's behaviour
Lyanna is kidnapped (or elopes)
Brandon Stark dies
Ned marries Catelyn
Fight at the Tower Of Joy
Robert kills Rhaegar
Jamie kills the King
Ned finds Lyanna
"Jon is born"
Robert and Ned take the Iron Throne
Catelyn arrives at Winterfell with Robb a babe in arms to find Jon there with a wet nurse

So the "Mad King" wouldn't have a clue about Lyanna's son

EverySongbirdSays · 06/05/2016 23:44

Rhaegar was already married though wasnt he?

To Elia Martell

So they couldn't have been eloping in he sense of getting married, desperately in love and doing a runner maybe.

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/05/2016 00:22

I thought Jaime killed the Mad King because he roasted men (Ned's father and brother included) in their armour over wildfire. I don't think Jaime cares much for the general people of Westeros.

Room101isWhereIUsedToLive · 07/05/2016 00:23

Targs had a history of polyamaoury. So they might have been Legitimately married. Possibly.
Think that Theon is going to head back to Winterfell. There is a plot line in the books that his return could cover.

EverySongbirdSays · 07/05/2016 00:49

Did Jamie not just kill him because Daddy told him to and then later claim noble reasons?

WeDoNotSow · 07/05/2016 01:29

I think Jaime just did the lesser of two evils.
On one hand, you had Daddy leading the rebellion, raping plundering and pillaging through the city, and other, you had the Mad King wanting to put the city to the torch (a wildfire torch, at that!), proclaiming 'let him be King over charred bones and cooked meat, let him be the King of ashes)
Jaime was also under orders to kill Tywin.
Grim choice, kingslayer or kinslayer? Both are considered accursed, so I think he just went with it afterwards and played his role

CaptainWarbeck · 07/05/2016 04:31

Who gave Jaime orders to kill Tywin? Jaime's an interesting character. I really like him in the books, he's such a mix of good and bad and keeps getting better as we get to know him more.

I can't see Theon heading back to Winterfell. The torture Ramsay would inflict on him for escaping with Sansa would be horrific. I took 'home' to mean the Iron Islands. We know his sister at least tried to rescue him, she might not be too hostile to his return.

Cerseirys · 07/05/2016 06:51

I'd love to see Rhaegar. I always imagine him as a younger version of Jason Isaacs' Lucius Malfoy from the second Harry Potter film.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 07/05/2016 07:22

I agree with the suspicions that Lyanna wasn't actually abducted. I'd forgotten about all the speculation re Meera Reed too. May have to read the books again to refresh my memory!

QueenOfThorns · 07/05/2016 07:22

Ooh, yes please!

Trills · 07/05/2016 08:08

In the show at least Robert definitely thought that Jon belonged to Ned - on the way from Winterfelll to King's Landing they had a chat about women and Robert was asking Ned questions about Jon's mother.

gingercat12 · 07/05/2016 10:49

Cerseirys You make me feel less bad about fancying Jason Isaacs.

I forgot we would not see Rhaegar at the Tower of Joy. I always imagined him as Rhaegar or Young Griff.

The mad King Captain
When he realised the city was lost, he ordered the pyromancers to set the city alight, and ordered Jaime to kill Tywin.
Jaime killed the pyromancer, stopping the order from going out, and then killed Aerys.

WeDoNotSow · 07/05/2016 12:34

I love Jaimes 'redemption arc' also, And as plenty of PP have said, how there is no 'good' or 'evil' just lots of shades of grey.
Or how people have been condemned for doing, in actual fact, the 'least worst' option etc

gingercat12 · 07/05/2016 14:42

Wedonotsow I love it, too. But so far it is not really there in the show. Sad

Highsteaks · 08/05/2016 10:51

I have built Rhaegar up in my head to be an absolute hottie. Like a young Brad Pitt or something. And for Lyanna to be really beautiful as well.

EverySongbirdSays · 08/05/2016 11:06

I will almost definitely be staying up for the 2am showing of Episode 3. Anyone else doing same? Shall I start new thread?

Please don't be Rickon, Please don't be Rickon

JonSnowsBeardClippings · 08/05/2016 11:27

I liked the lyanna we saw in the flashback. I had imagined her as this fancy lady in a gown and perfect hair but in fact the action version is much cooler. Lyanna would have been dressed practically and fairly plainly I think, as much as she was allowed as a woman.
Rhaegar was clearly sex on a stick. Robert Baratheon was a big handsome man but without subtlety or intellect.

Cerseirys · 08/05/2016 12:05

Layman wasn't supposed to have been particularly beautiful. In fact it's said that Arya resembles her.

WeDoNotSow · 08/05/2016 12:34

Lyanna was very beautiful I thought, didn't they call her a 'wild beauty', whatever that means?
Ned always told Arya she looked like Lyanna, but she never believed him as Lyanna was beautiful and she wasn't.
Or maybe I'm making that up?!? Grin

QueenOfThorns · 08/05/2016 13:35

Rhaegar was clearly sex on a stick

It's not just me who's got a bit of a Rhaegar thing going on, then Grin

I don't remember hearing about him being cast for this series, though Sad

Highsteaks · 08/05/2016 13:52

Yeah I imagine Rhaegar and Lyanna to be a super hot couple (obviously here I'm assuming that they eloped and not that she was kidnapped and raped.by him!) I bet there must be some erotic fan fiction about them out there somewhere!

I was thinking about it the other day actually - there aren't that many couples in GOT who are together simply because they fancy each other and just want to get it on are there? Most of it is political couplings. I guess there is Jaime and Cersei, and there was tyrion and the prostitute girlfriend (oh God I can't even remember her name!). Dany and Drogo eventually got on pretty well, if you forget the rapey bit in the show and the fact she is 13 in the books! Oh and Jon and Ygritte. The only couple.I can think of who genuinely seemed.to love each other and whose love.wasn't 'forbidden' was Ned and Catelyn?
