Just saw we were dangerously close to filling the last thread so have taken the liberty as starting this one.

Ah yes, Christopher Plummer as the Captain does things to me too.

Ida - Those pictures are amazing! He looks better out of his dog collar!

mogloveseggs your DS is about a week younger than my dd2 then. She was about 10 days old when I watched the first ep while feeding her.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 05/03/2016 18:30

The only thing putting me off the box sets is having to watch all the episodes with Jenny in.

OldCrowMedicineShow · 05/03/2016 18:32

We were in hysterics at the background music during Barbara and Tom's seduction scene. "Tiger wah wah wah"

BikeRunSki · 05/03/2016 18:33

The first 3 series are on Netflix.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 05/03/2016 18:34

Christ, wasn't Jenny awful?

Her not being in it now highlights how bad she was.

Credit to the writers and other cast/characters for making it watchable. Can't have been easy.

NeedACleverNN · 05/03/2016 18:34

Oh god me too. It was so cheesy it was almost embarrassing. It was that bloody song that did it

AnneEyhtMeyer · 05/03/2016 18:46

I know, she was dreadful. Absolutely awful. Wooden and horrible personality.

It shouldn't be Trixie who dies unless they are going really off the books. I know the real Trixie and she is most certainly not dead....or an alcoholic although does enjoy a glass or two of something over a staff Xmas lunch.

She has actually only just properly retired in her late 70s. She has worked ver so many decades and seen so many changes....it was amazing to work and talk with her. Worked with her before the Call the Midwife show came out. She saw I was reading the Call the Midwife book one day just after it had been published and we had a chat about changes but she didn't tell me for ages that she was Trixie (not her real name obv).

StitchesInTime · 05/03/2016 19:18

Oh, I'd forgotten about Jenny's bloke who fell off a ladder. I must have been getting him mixed up with Jenny's other bloke who got another girl pregnant and had a shotgun marriage.

TooAswellAlso · 05/03/2016 19:21

Hello! I found you all!

Getting ready to blub tomorrow. Or cheer if it's sister Winifred.

Sainsburys has box set 1-4 for £18. Friend at work has them and is lending them. Hopefully. I've seen series 1 but that's it until this series.

ShelaghTurner · 05/03/2016 19:21

How lovely that you know her Alfie. It's been disputed so much who is real and who is invented, it's nice to see that at least one of them is real. I won't quiz you on her but did life work out for her? Cynthia (if she was real) seemed to take years to settle

ShelaghTurner · 05/03/2016 19:22

You've only seen series 1 and 5 Too? Oh you've got such a treat ahead of you. Im so jealous!

MarthasHarbour · 05/03/2016 19:38

Alfie i am so envious of you knowing Trixie! My nana was a nurse in the 60s-80s and has a little bit of Trixie about her, i always imagine my nana now when i watch the show and it gives me a smile Smile

rivierliedje · 05/03/2016 20:03

It must be fascinating to talk to someone who has seen the changes first hand over such a long time!

Does anyone else wonder how they decide which births need one midwife and which need two? Obviously new midwives go along with more experienced ones for a while and twins get two midwives, but the rest seems rather random.
Also somtimes they do the delivery just wearing uniform and sometimes they get all dressed up in those white scrub things.

TooAswellAlso · 05/03/2016 20:05

Yes sherlagh! I watched the first episode of this series and was hooked. Downloaded series one from a sky channel and watched them back to back (apart from the finale which didn't record!) so just waiting now. It's my little guilty pleasure - I love history and this has grabbed me (five years late granted!)

Alfieisnoisy · 05/03/2016 20:11

Trixie has had a lovely life, husband, children and grandchildren, She was real....or at least was the person Trixie was based upon.

I don't know about Chummy as I never asked my friend but I get the impression that Chummy was an amalgamation of several people...as was Sr Monica Joan.

Sr Julienne was real as Jennifer Worth talks about visiting her when she was very ill before she died. And I think Cynthia was godmother to one of Jennifer Worth's daughters. She left the sisterhood behind, married a clergyman but suffered with lifelong depression which is sad.

Social history is so fascinating though and "Trixie" says the East End was such an insular place with families so close to each other. Everyone was related to someone nearby and then the slums were pulled down which is great but they lost the close support which was there before.

MrsJayy · 05/03/2016 20:15

Finally caught up oooeer tom and barbara getting steamy must have been the brylcream or something lovely to see Sister Evangeline back her exchange with SMJ was very sweet.

MrsJayy · 05/03/2016 20:17

Does trixie like her TV self ?

seasidesally · 05/03/2016 20:18

missed series 1 & 2 so my son downloaded them for free, watch about 2 a night, really enjoying them

i dont see the problem with Jenny but not keen on Sheila as a nun

AnneEyhtMeyer · 05/03/2016 20:20

If I were the real life Trixie I'd be bloody annoyed at the direction they've taken the character.

I don't think they are paying any attention to the books now, so it could easily be Trixie who dies. We need to look at other jobs the actresses have now. Who has "moved on" to something more lucrative?

OP posts:
bonnie1981 · 05/03/2016 20:27

Its got to be trixie who dies, even if the real one is still alive.

Trixie is getting on my nerves and I really feel all this sadness over the alcoholism and losing tom is leading up to something.

I also suspect the actress has had enough too.

TooAswellAlso · 05/03/2016 20:28

Alfie that's all really interesting. Are there many books as well and interviews?

Does anyone have links?
