Just saw we were dangerously close to filling the last thread so have taken the liberty as starting this one.

Ah yes, Christopher Plummer as the Captain does things to me too.

Ida - Those pictures are amazing! He looks better out of his dog collar!

Dafuq was Chummy!??

ShelaghTurner · 08/03/2016 10:54

Housewife the voice over mentioned Jenny getting married and having two daughters.

OhShutUpThomas · 08/03/2016 10:56

It's still like that these days Alis. Properly upper class/posh people are generally extremely well mannered, courteous and kind to their employees even if they're twats in other ways
It's the nouveau riche who are arseholes to staff because they think that's what 'posh' is. And it's not.

There are plenty of houses still running in a similar style to Downton Smile

MrsJayy · 08/03/2016 10:58

Both of my grandmothers were in service from 14 till they got married not as grand houses like Downton mind you but big enough for staff 1 was just a daily because her mother died and she looked after kids and her dad

Housewife2010 · 08/03/2016 11:00

Shelagh, Trixie and Tom were mentioned though weren't they?

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/03/2016 11:10

Ah, that's quite a nice thought to take away from the thread, if nothing else. Thanks for putting me right ppeat and "Ohshutup*.

Pebble21uk · 08/03/2016 12:04

Mornington in the cafe scene with Patsy & Delia, Delia was writing to her mother asking for her birth certificate... saying she'd never had a passport before as had had no need for one - her father being a Draper in Pembrokeshire!!

Housewife2010 · 08/03/2016 12:07

I love Patsy's voice. I've found Trixie's affectedness rather irritating this series but I love Patsy and Nurse Crane. Dimpled Tom and and the lovely Fred are favourites too.

NameChangeEr · 08/03/2016 12:51

Finally watched it, then came to find the thread.
I like the turners, don't understand all the haterz!
I don't think patsy was being over bearing, just showing her mum that she could look after delia, that delia could be her own person.

IdaJones · 08/03/2016 12:54

I'm watching more of it now. I'd only watched the beginning. Wasn't Sister E lovely with that baby. She'd be everyone's ideal midwife i should think.

mogloveseggs · 08/03/2016 14:37

I think sister e should be a studied requirement of midwifery lol.
Ctm makes me long for the community sense that we have all but lost now, but also makes me very glad for medical advances.

IdaJones · 08/03/2016 15:30

Yes, it's safer to give birth now, but we don't usually have the luxury that they had then of having someone deliver our baby who we got to know duting the pregnancy. I'd love to have had my community midwife deliver my baby, but instead had people I'd never met before like many people do.

MrsJayy · 08/03/2016 15:57

I had difficult pregnancies and had the same midwife both times she delivered dd2 but had to go off shift for dd1 but it was lovely seeing the same face on ante natal appointments then in delivery

thalidomide leprosy in Brazil - www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23418102 reprots of case of child born 2005...

"Where the disease is most common Thalidomide will continue to be prescribed and the risk of babies being born terribly injured will remain.
Artur Custodio from Morhan, the national leprosy campaign group, recognises that the medicine is dangerous, but says it's cars that cause most injuries and disabilities in Brazil.
"We don't talk about banning cars, we say we should teach people how to drive responsibly," he says.
"It's the same thing for Thalidomide."

Hulababy · 08/03/2016 17:49

There are many medications that are dangerous if taken incorrectly, or by the wrong people at the wrong time. I imagine there are several which are dangerous to pregnant women or anyone trying to get pregnant.

I take methotrexate and was given strict warnings to not TTC, and to take precautions against pregnancy, and also to stop immediately if I thought I was pregnant. It can cause many issues to a developing baby and even cause fetal death.

Imnotaslimjim · 08/03/2016 20:07

housewife it's Jenny that is mentioned in the marriage, she marries Colin Worth and they go on to have a couple of kids

AnneEyhtMeyer · 08/03/2016 20:26

Wasn't it Philip Worth?

OP posts:
Imnotaslimjim · 08/03/2016 22:48

Sorry, yes it was!! I don't know where I got Colin from.....

BayLeaves · 10/03/2016 13:33

Yes, I wish we could just the best bits of the past. I'd love that kind of community but also wouldn't wish back the racism, sexism etc. I suppose it's lovely if you're an accepted member of those kind of tight knit communities, but not if you end up on the reject pile due to mothering an illegitimate child, being disabled, non-white, and so on.

ppeatfruit · 10/03/2016 14:38

That's true BayLeaves also if you think how much bullying goes on now in some work\school communities, there never were and never will be perfect set ups. Sad

kimlo · 13/03/2016 19:20

Ive watched series 1 and 2 on netflix now, Im just about to start series 3. Its made me realise that the last 2 series havent been as good.

ppeatfruit · 14/03/2016 09:49

I liked Paul O'Grady, talking about the last one, on Radio 2 last night. He said his auntie was a midwife and reckoned it was all true to life.

The last one was excellent IMO.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 15/03/2016 13:07

I really enjoyed this one. Didn't expect Sister E to die, but I think it was well done.

I really disagree Patsy is controlling. Or that Delia could just have told her mother she was a lesbian. Hmm Like that would have gone down well.

I know her mum knows, but there's a big gap between knowing and saying. And I agreed that it showed the two of them being strong for each other - because Patsy was earlier shown as being quite cautious/nervous about going to the club, so standing up to Delia's mum is partly showing Delia that she will take a stand when needed, I think?

I also loved the dress she was wearing, though, so am probably a bit biased!

NeedACleverNN · 16/04/2016 15:08

Has anyone seen that Chummy will be back for series 6?
