I'm not familiar with the story, but the trailers for it look awesome.

I can't see anything with both Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston in, as well as Olivia Colman being bad, can you?

How could I have missed this thread so far!

My twopenny's worth is that I reckon Roper totally knows it wasn't Corky who betrayed him, as I think Corky knew the pre-arrangement about the weapons going straight from Istanbul (so wouldn't have needed to betray him). It's totally far fetched for such a mastermind not to have twigged his gf is shagging the red hot new guy. And the return to Cairo must be deliberate.

Davros · 21/03/2016 23:31

Why would they bother going back to Cairo just to catch him out, why not just shoot him?

GypsyFl0ss · 22/03/2016 05:40

Makes sense bialy. I think Pine had underestimated the shred history between those two.

Why not just shoot him? Roper strikes me as a man who would get great pleasure out of the game before the enacts his revenge. I don't think a quick bullet to the head would do it for him.

GypsyFl0ss · 22/03/2016 05:42

I do love Roper's title of "worst man in the world".
Maybe it's the alliteration of it or just the slightly understated simplicity of it. No hyperbole or superlatives. Just simply the "worst man in the world".

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 22/03/2016 08:57

I love WMITW too- it's sort of almost comical

I love the way Samira?sophie(??can't remember) said it first- almost offhand, like it was undisputable fact

I love that Hugh Laurie is playing the WMITW

Hugh

LAURIE

I also can't help thinking about the second WMITW- do he and the WMITW jockey for position ie if the SWMITW saw that arms display, was he saying to his henchmen FUCK now we have to raise our game, get me some of that napalm

AdventuresOfADentist · 22/03/2016 09:20

Definitely muddha I think there's a ranking, like the Forbes rich list or maybe it's like the GQ awards. There's categories like best dictator etc.

AdventuresOfADentist · 22/03/2016 09:21

Best dressed arms dealer, sexiest warlord... I could go on...

OnlyLovers · 22/03/2016 09:34

Mr Eyes Close Together was in that weird not-funny 'comedy' with Joanna Scanlan (sorry Joanna, love you usually) about a dog-training centre, and didn't play an arsehole.

I don't like him though. He's got weird jowls and a nasal voice. I know lots of people who fancy him and I don't get it.

Tom in those khakis, though, with his broad shoulders and tiny belted waist...

fussychica · 22/03/2016 09:41

They all looked like they were on a photoshoot in their designer khakis and sunglasses. Designer mercenaries whatever nextGrin
It's gone too far off the plausability scale for me, only sticking with it as there is only one episode to go. Even if there is a second series I can't imagine watching it.

PersisFord · 22/03/2016 09:41

But TH is so dim and tedious!!!!!! He even killed Corky is quite a nice way!!!!

I have been watching it with DH. Last night when we were watching the bit with the lorries approaching the border, he pointed out that he didn't care one way or another, and that he didn't care who died, and that Roper surely didn't get to be the WMITW by letting strangers wander round his complexes writing down number plates. Also, shouldn't TH have shown some kind of emotion about the trucks at the border....he should have been appearing anxious that his guns were going to be discovered, no?

It's so FRUSTRATING!!!!!! I think maybe I am not a Le Carre kind of girl!!!!

PersisFord · 22/03/2016 09:41

Yy fussy I totally agree!!!

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 22/03/2016 10:00

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 22/03/2016 10:05

barked again

'even killed Corky in a nice way'

Grin

TH is soooo nice though.

Due to having preteen daughters* I've seen enough youtube videos of TH being all adorable to last me a lifetime

*cough

bibbitybobbityyhat · 22/03/2016 10:11

I'm looking forward to episode 6 (despite no Corky Sad ) but surely it would be a travesty if they manufactured a second series out of it? It's an adaptation of a novel isn't it? It must end where the novel ends!

I am truly gutted that i failed to watch any of Happy Valley. What can I do?? The early episodes of the second series aren't on i-player any more! I wish the BBC had a pay per view catch-up service, I would quite happily pay £1 an episode or something for something I've missed.

CaveMum · 22/03/2016 10:19

Agree that "Tree" (still loving that!) should have been showing more emotion at the border crossing - anxiety when they were stopped and elation that they'd been let through.

I suspect Sophie/Samira's boyfriend is going to pop up during the final episode so that Tree can avenge her death by doing away with him, but will he blow his cover in the process...?

NeverEverAnythingEver · 22/03/2016 11:19

I thought Corky's death was a bit grim - it wasn't "a nice way" - he deliberately bashed him to death quite cold-bloodedly. Though I guess there was no choice for him...

I do agree that everything was a bit like a photo shoot. Apart from the Burr house. Poor old Mr Burr. :(

Don't like the government people. But they were quite believable, sadly.

GypsyFl0ss · 22/03/2016 11:55

I like the way we never get to see who Mr Burr is.

Corky's death was anything but nice. It was the only time I've seen Pine being anything other than bland.

Lalsy · 22/03/2016 11:59

Bibbity, the BBC does have a pay per view catch up service Smile. I discovered it the other day.store.bbc.com/about-bbc-store. Happy Valley is on there - individual episodes for 1.89.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 22/03/2016 12:04

Oh Lalsy! I HEART you Smile that makes me very happy!

Lalsy · 22/03/2016 12:10

GrinGrin. I was pretty happy when I discovered it - and pleased for dosh to go to beeb.

GeorgeTheThird · 22/03/2016 12:58

I thought that the weapons never actually being at the Haven, and the trucks being decoys for the purchaser, was Roper's usual way of operating. In which case, Corky would have known that and only Tree would have believed the weapons to be on the trucks and sent in the US marines. So I'm now convinced that Roper must know for sure that Tree is the rotten apple (apart from the obvious fact that he is the new guy...)

OnlyLovers · 22/03/2016 13:08

George, but Sandy said 'You're a bad man' to him with what sounded like genuine amazement; it sounded to me as though this was a new trick from Roper.

Although I'm surprised if it WAS; I would think that decoying was a common way of operating. But within the story, I think it was made to look as though this was new and unexpected.

GypsyFl0ss · 22/03/2016 14:06

I couldn't help thinking , whilst watching the lightshow at The Haven, just how much money they burnt in that spectacle? But then figured that Roper would see it asmoney well spent if he was going to net 240 million for his deal.

GeorgeTheThird · 22/03/2016 15:06

Oh, ok only - phew! Was v worried about Tree but I think you are right. (It would make more sense to do it this way all the time wouldn't it. You know, if you were an international arms dealer and all.)

OnlyLovers · 22/03/2016 15:47

Don't get me wrong, I'm still worried for Pine! I've a horrible feeling that Roper knows very well that Pine is the mole and is playing him (and Jed), although to exactly what end I'm not sure about.
