SCD 2015 #9 - Final musings, then the Christmas Special!

We still seemed happy chatting and filled up the last thread completely, so I thought we could have one more for the year. It should see us through the Christmas Special (which I'm really looking forward to!) too Xmas Smile

She was in pro dances and we saw plenty of her, but she didn't actually have a partner.

I watched the Christmas special last night and actually enjoyed it more than a lot of this series! There seemed to be a lot more actual dancing (and I liked the music too). I was pleased that Harry won - I wanted either him or Tom too.

They always keep some ex pros on hand in case one of the regulars is injured or for xmas and other specials. Robin was used for this years christmas show, and Ian Waite did the People's Strictly.

Joanne appeared in the opening credits though, which I found odd. The Clifton family are definitely the producers favourites.

Dipankrispaneven · 27/12/2015 16:13

Not always for injuries - quite often just draft in a pro who has been knocked out. They did it with Brendan once, ISTR. But I don't think Joanne is regarded as an ex pro, she is if anything a pro who's taken a temporary step backwards this year.

CaveMum · 27/12/2015 22:24

Hi all, the missed a large chunk of the show on Christmas Day as it was my turn to put DD to bed. Caught up now though.

Cassidy was in the same company as "Marine A", the man that was imprisoned for "murdering" a member of the Taliban. Their company took over from my BIL's company's tour in Afghanistan in 2009. He said they had a bloody awful time of it.

millimat · 28/12/2015 22:33

Only just watched the Christmas special. I thought toms dance was by far the best, but as people have said, he's kept it up with doing west end shows. I'd love to watch him on stage in a show. But although his show dance is still my favourite ever, I agree he does seem to love himself a bit too much and maybe expected to win.

CrazyMermaidHair · 29/12/2015 21:04

Give Joanne Clifton a good partner next year and she will blow people away. She is the best female dancer on the show by far and is the only world champion amongst the current crop of pro's.

There is a big shake up of pro's coming next year apparently. Three new women rumoured to be joining the show.

TurduckenForDinner · 29/12/2015 21:06

I think Jo is technically the best dancer, but I love watching Oti the best. Oti seems to experience lower gravity than the rest of us.

Finally watched the Christmas special. Well, it was great to get another final fix of Strictly before it disappears until the next season. I surprised myself by getting all teared up at Brucie's appearance. I actually stopped watching SCD for his last two series as I couldn't bear it any longer, so I wasn't expecting to feel emotional. But seeing him so frail and so obviously gutted at not being there made me all nostalgic for Saturday nights watching the Generation Game - the original 70s seasons yes I really am that old. He was lovely in that, a really kind and generous host putting people at their ease. And then I thought back to The Gladiators who were the Saturday night family telly when my DDs were little. After that, I was an emotional wreck blubbing away on the sofa at all the beautiful dances and another year ebbing away. Sad

A shameless bump to say it looks like the Strictly curse has struck again...

Damn! Just couldn't stop myself clicking on that link!

Not surprised really Hmm

areyoubeingserviced · 03/01/2016 12:03

Not surprised
Giovanni adores her.
It was obvious that she was attracted to him, but she was trying to resist him.

CrazyMermaidHair · 03/01/2016 12:47

I definitely saw this one coming as well.

Feel a bit sorry for the boyfriend she's dumped as well.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 03/01/2016 18:59

He came up as a suggested friend on my Facebook the other day Grin

CrazyMermaidHair · 03/01/2016 19:44

Who did, Giovanni?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 03/01/2016 19:58

Yep. We have quite a few mutual friends (dance people), I presume that's why.

Has there been a SCD year when there hasn't been a fling?

GMF had only been with her boyfriend for a few months so you'd think she'd still be madcrazy about him, and disinclined to cheat. I can kind of understand the likes of Rachel Riley, Joe Calzaghe and Ben Cohen having their heads turned after many years with their partners (not condoning it though).

There's also the "position of authority" thing where people fall for teachers, doctors, counsellors etc. The pros act as mentors/tutors and the celebs, many of whom find SCD mentally and physically hard, lean on them. I understand why lines are crossed.

CrazyMermaidHair · 03/01/2016 20:11

I don't think there was a fling in 2014. In 2013 Rachel Riley left her husband for Pasha.

I still think that Jay and Aliona were shagging, and I still think Anita was smitten with Gleb. There was quite a bit of it this series.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 03/01/2016 20:15

As well as the position of authority thing you get very very close to your dance partner too (physically and emotionally - they're the only one who cares about you're dancing as much as you do). I know a lot of people who dance, and there are more who have gone out with at least one their dance partner than haven't!

I've danced with four people - the two who were single and straight both asked me out.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 03/01/2016 20:16

And then of course there's always the vote-winning capability of the showmance.

CrazyMermaidHair · 03/01/2016 20:36

That's interesting Polkadots. You quite frequently see dance partners on Strictly who are either in a relationship or married to one another, going right back to the beginning you had Darren and Lilia, then Vincent and Flavia, James and Ola, Karen and Kevin, Alijaz and Janette and now you've got someone like Tristan who dances professionaly with his wife. I believe Len Goodman was married to his dance partner at one point as well.

I suppose when you spend that much time with someone and there's chemistry between them it's going to happen isn't it?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 03/01/2016 21:46

I think so - I always said I thought going out with your dance partner was a bad idea until I started dancing with my current partner. Then it just seemed to happen... HmmGrin

OP posts:
CaveMum · 03/01/2016 22:34

If you read Len Goodman's biography he explains that he and his first wife split after they gave up professional dancing because they discovered they didn't actually gave much in common. He said it made sense to get married if only to save on the cost of two hotel rooms when travelling to competitions!

Redcrayons · 03/01/2016 22:58

Kristina is rumoured to be going into Celeb BB this time round. I thought it might have been Ola. Wonder of this means she won't be going back to Strictly.

TheDrsDocMartens · 04/01/2016 08:12

Hasn't she already said she's not coming back?

CrazyMermaidHair · 04/01/2016 08:48

Ola and Aliona have said that they are leaving, but the general opinion seems to be that Kristina is going as well.
