Yet another crime drama heading to our screens. I'm watching heaps of shows like this at the moment. Anyone else planning to watch?

I won't be watching live but will try to get on catch up ASAP. Looks intriguing.

Blimey what an ending. Stellan S excellent.

Not sure I believe the Frankie bit though. He was angry with Stevie and the bitterness, sense of failure, drink, perhaps wanting to prove himself etc. But to kill her? Surprised he could shoot and drive if he was stumbling drunk tbh. Also think he knew Stevie was his mum.

I can understand Stevie keeping her investigations from Chrissie but not from River.

Loved Chrissie in the supermarket.

Quibbling really, thought it was v well made and compulsive viewing.

ThatsNotMyRabbit · 18/11/2015 08:52

What was all the "....and you say" stuff about?

Fiderer · 18/11/2015 09:29

I think it was mirroring what was going through River's mind as he recalled the evening with Stevie and what he said and then what he wanted to say.

firesidechat · 18/11/2015 11:23

How wonderful was that? I haven't enjoyed a tv series so much in years. Perfectly acted and perfectly written.

Is anyone else torn between thinking that is was the ultimate ending and wanting more River please? I would love a second series, but only if it could somehow match the original.

Now what to do. Lewis, Unforgotten and River all finished. Sob.

Elendon · 18/11/2015 11:33

SweetJane - I am the same, going through some life changing moments too. I posted deliberately not looking at what others had said and was very surprised to see we had all had a good old fashioned cry. It was most liberating.

Fireside - The Bridge is back on BBC4 this Saturday. I'm so looking forward to it.

firesidechat · 18/11/2015 13:18

Oh forgot about that. My husband is a big fan.

Lottapianos · 18/11/2015 13:26

Another one here who cried buckets and then cried again when I read the review in the Guardian this morning. I had moments in the last 10 minutes of wondering if it had all tipped over too far into cheese, but SS's performance kept me totally hooked. I can't remember being so moved by one actor's performance before. He really was incredibly brilliant.

As much as I adored this series, I hope there isn't another one. It was perfect as it was. From the absolute depths of shock and grief to the beginnings of acceptance, and moving towards the future, and even some joy coming into his life. And Ira is a perfect friend for him - he looks out for him without making a fuss, and is so kind and caring.

Yes I know its not real, as my DP kept reminding me last night!

Inkanta · 18/11/2015 20:42

A very good series I agree, and hope there's another one. I was disappointed though who the killer turned out to be. I won't say who it was in case some haven't watched it yet.

I must say I won't miss seeing the numerous takes of that gun blow to her head!

gaggiagirl · 18/11/2015 23:32

I'm undecided if I want a second season, I definitely want more Stellan on our screens!. It was so perfect the writers would have to really out do themselves for a second season.

Fiderer · 19/11/2015 07:41

I'd like another River series with River & Ira on a new case. Suppose he could have NW helping/scolding him but the focus on the love aspect should now be dropped. She can call him Mr Magoo when he misses something and be his internal radar.

Eddie Marsan can also return, he's another part of River's head and he was also so good in this.

Jackiebrambles · 19/11/2015 09:24

Never has an ending touched me so much. I watched it all over again on iplayer as I couldn't stop thinking about it!

I'd love another series but agree they'd need to be careful to maintain the quality.

Not sure Stellan and Nichola would do it though.

Lottapianos · 19/11/2015 13:21

Same here Jackie - I thought about it all day yesterday and had 'I Love to Love' going round in my head on a loop! Will definitely watch again

I'm going to watch episode 1 again too because SS's portrayal of the early stages of grief was shockingly good

fuzzpig · 19/11/2015 13:26

Just watched it :( :(

I wish I could've cried but I'm numbed by ADs.

I'm a bit thick when it comes to understanding stuff, and I'm unsure of how much actually knew about the truth? It all got a bit complicated for me with too many implied things and not enough actually being said, which I always struggle with. And was doing so because of the immigration stuff Stevie was investigating, or because of the other crime that he had committed long before that presumably didn't know about?

That was absolutely brilliant, anyway. Perfect drama, perfect acting. Off to finish Unforgotten now but I fear it'll pale in comparison!

Above link if anyone fancies a bop!

gaggiagirl · 19/11/2015 21:50

fuzz yeah I think the hit was ordered to stop her going to the police and breaking up the family again......i think.

sadwidow28 · 20/11/2015 00:30

I wasn't 100% happy with Frankie being the killer - not least of all because the shot couldn't have come from the blue Mondeo (it was in the back of Stevie's head as she turned to recognise the driver of the Mondeo so it had to come from the white van or a person standing at the cross-junction).

We knew that Stevie was working on an investigation that wasn't on the books - but her over-time and booking work vehicles would have to be authorised. That's why I thought Murky Marcus McDonald was implicated somehow.

But how can I take away from that most beautiful ending of Stevie and River dancing in the twinkly lights? That was unexpressed love personified. I am so glad that others shed some tears because I was dancing with them and crying at the same time.

Fabulous acting! Great story (even though it didn't quite fit together at the end for me).

Well done BBC and everyone!

Fiderer · 20/11/2015 08:08

I agree that Frankie being the killer was Hmm How did he even know she was there?

I think more credible that Bad Mickey paid one of the illegal immigrants to do it, also in return for getting papers more quickly. As he did with Heider. Someone who could have followed Stevie whereas Frankie was with Jimmy and in no state to.

Loved the swimming pool scene with River and Frankie.

Anyone else had that flipping song in their head the last few days? Only good thing is I keep seeing River's face as he smiles and dances. Apart from that it's driving me crackers.

AnonymousBird · 20/11/2015 13:40

Finally have caught up and could come back to the thread.

Absolutely bloody amazing.

Inkanta · 20/11/2015 13:50

'I agree that Frankie being the killer was hmm How did he even know she was there?'

Exactly. Just not credible at all!

Jackiebrambles · 20/11/2015 14:34

I agree actually re Frankie. He could barely walk, how could he drive, shoot so accurately whilst driving, then drive off at speed so competently!?!

AnthonyPandy · 20/11/2015 17:32

Agree about Frankie etc etc.

BUT

I've developed a thing for Stellan Skarsgard Blush.

He's bloody gorgeous Blush.

Jackiebrambles · 20/11/2015 19:48

Yes he'a amazing, craggy old man love.

Check him out in good will hunting! Probably not the girl with the dragon tattoo.

gaggiagirl · 20/11/2015 22:01

See now you are making me doubt frankies guilt. You're all right.
Could this be the premise of season two? Ooh that would be good.
They cant have too much Stevie in season two then it'll turn into Randall and Hopkirk (deceased)......... Yeah I am that old.

Fiderer · 21/11/2015 09:47

It's not that I doubt his guilt and I think River wouldn't have arrested him if he did.

It's that I don't find it plausible from what we saw of his character and his condition on the night of the murder.

Rather it not be the premise of a second series. And I've changed my mind about having Stevie's manifestation in a poss 2nd nagging at him. I'd rather it focused on Ira & River.
