OK, after freaking the bejaysus out of me with the weird trailer / advert I am intrigued and looking forward to giving this programme a viewing.

(I will have to record and watch later as I will be watching Messrs Strange and Norrell.)

Anyone else looking forward to it and hoping it lives up to the hype?

Had a proper freaky dream last night and woke up in a panic! Mustn't watch the next one just before bedShock

SecretSpy · 17/06/2015 08:01

We watched it, I quite enjoyed it.
It brought back memories for me of short circuit, number five, he's alive! Grin
-shows age-

Supervet · 17/06/2015 08:07

Thank you, I was confused over Leo and whether he was human or synth

werenotreallyhere · 17/06/2015 09:53

Leo is definitely human, at the brothel the girl said he had to open the door as it required human warmth, apologies if someone else has already said that

FujimotosElixir · 17/06/2015 12:42

ino that was horrible so the synths are trapped in there.

038THETA · 18/06/2015 22:21

what does it matter if they are trapped the synths are just robots?

I dont worry about my dishwasher being trapped in my kitchen as a domestic slave

messyisthenewtidy · 18/06/2015 22:28

Yeah but Theta how can you be sure your dishwasher isn't lulling you into a false sense of security before wreaking its terrible revenge on you?

One day you might come home to find all your cutlery has been abducted and your crockery laying smashed all over the kitchen floor? Shock

038THETA · 18/06/2015 22:46

omigosh
and what if it is secretly plotting with the microwave and the kettle!
we are all doomed and no mistakeShock

Rummikub · 19/06/2015 03:28

I think that's were it gets interesting. At what point should the machines be treated like humans?
Black mirror really made me think too.

messyisthenewtidy · 19/06/2015 06:34

What I think is a bit silly is that they created the robots to look exactly like humans. They must have known it would cause problems of people treating them like humans and the whole world getting confused.

Maybe it is because they treat them like humans that the robots have evolved to crave human love.

So if you kick your dishwasher every now and again you should be ok Theta!

messyisthenewtidy · 19/06/2015 06:47

"At what point should the machines be treated like humans?"

I can't believe I'm contemplating this at 6.40 in the morning!! But here goes..

I think, because the machines look so much like humans, the way people treat them actually reflects how they want to treat humans but aren't socially/ legally allowed to.

So for example the man at the end who has sex with the prostitute "robot" would treat women this way if he could just as the girl who shoots the gardener robot obviously takes pleasure in belittling people.

So whilst the robots save sentient humans from suffering it doesn't stop (and possibly encourages) the evil streak in human nature and possibly encourages it by allowing people to treat robots in the way they would like to that humans and feel no guilt.

Will someone please yell at me "Messy it's just a TV show and you need to get out of bed!Grin"

038THETA · 19/06/2015 08:14

I think that's a very good point Messy.
I guess it also applies to virtual reality experiences which could enable people to have experiences not available to them in real life.
Ie they are not just inconsequential games but can profoundly shape and change us for better or worse! ?

038THETA · 19/06/2015 08:17

'Maybe it is because they treat them like humans that the robots have evolved to crave human love'

but here you are begging questions about ai and the 'hard problem of consciousness' Wink

StaircaseAtTheUniversity · 19/06/2015 08:24

Just caught this on catch up. Scared the bjesus out of me!!!

MadeMan · 19/06/2015 16:48
never had to work as a prostitute.
Rummikub · 19/06/2015 17:13

I find it an interesting question. Not too far in the past people of different races were treated inhumanely for the gain of wealth.
Perhaps a time will come in the not too instant future when robots will want equal rights?
Yes I watch far too much sci fi and grew up on on tv series where robots are accepted as individuals.

mistymeanour · 19/06/2015 17:25

If the synths were doing all the "low level" jobs how did most of the populace survive? They couldn't all be lawyers and managers

MadeMan · 19/06/2015 17:53

"Perhaps a time will come in the not too instant future when robots will want equal rights?"

If humans create artificial intelligence and robots become self aware then I reckon it will happen, because they will start to question everything.

It's an interesting theme that crops up in a lot of science fiction.

The Turing Test has for a long time been a marker for A.I. and also Garry Kasparov playing chess against Deep Blue.

Rummikub · 19/06/2015 17:54

Then humans will become subservient?

MadeMan · 19/06/2015 18:06

"Then humans will become subservient?"

Perhaps we will. I don't think the Terminator is going to turn up on the doorstep with an Uzi 9mm, but you might get your online medical records changed so you end up getting the wrong prescription medicine or something.

An intelligent rogue program on the Internet could be bothersome.

Rummikub · 19/06/2015 18:14

No I'm not imagining terminator. More that humans will become sidelined. Although perhaps a human advantage is our creativity and procreating.

There already is computer error and 'computer says no' scenarios! Grin

Rummikub · 19/06/2015 18:15

I might have to live off grid (paranoid)

MadeMan · 19/06/2015 18:47

"There already is computer error and 'computer says no' scenarios!"

So human extinction may come as a massive 404 not found page request error? Grin

Rummikub · 19/06/2015 19:06

Yes it'll start small, gather pace. We're doomed!

MadeMan · 19/06/2015 19:32

I'm off to the Anderson shelter then.
