Went to the park with the boys this morning and collected pine comes. Have dried them out over lunch and driven out all the creepy crawlers. Just come back in from spraying them silver and gold ready to be tree decorations. Wish the boys were as excited as I am!

Richtea I find Christmas a difficult time of the year as well and feel particularly down today for some reason. My father died a few years ago just before Christmas and this is the first year without my Mum so I'm doing it all on automatic pilot - really not thinking much about it at all. These threads are keeping my mind occupied on nice things - so thanks all for that.

Remember the obsessive woman at work and her ideas I was leading up to an affair? Thankfully that's gone quiet but her mother died three years ago and she told me earlier in the week that it gets worse and that I am "lucky" (???) because it gets worse as time goes on. That's rubbish, I think we all know that, but her words really hurt, really depressed me.

So today, I have put on my best cashmere jumper and my stag pants (have decided the Tesco ones are the best) to cheer me up and am sitting writing Christmas cards and when icemist posted the latest chapter of the CJ Collective, that boosted me up a bit as well.

Sorry to whinge - nice to get it off my chest.

Oh - and I have episode 5 on a loop and keep rewinding to the restaurant scene!

Nickel45 · 06/12/2014 15:09

Getting really Christmassy. We're off to an outdoor carols and nativity. Bit taters, but looking forward to it (More than the kids are!!)

icemist · 06/12/2014 15:30

Xmas isn't great for us either. But it does get easier. We lost hubby's brother in tragic circumstances just before Christmas 3 years ago, it's a bit easier this year but hard on the day as we all did a huge family day.

This thread is a great distraction

Just thinking about little scenes for fanfic ideas. I've always thought the moment when Molly ditches her helmet and strides over to the bomb vest wearing Bashira could make an interesting subject with the view points of CJ, Molly, Bashira and Smurf being explored. (OK, I know some people have said they hate Bashira saying "Am I going to die?" but despite its implausibility I nevertheless thought it was a a powerful scene) That could be interesting if four different people each took one of the viewpoints. You'd definitely get four different voices speaking. Any thoughts?

Rhubarb01 · 06/12/2014 15:58

If anyone fancies the idea, I don't mind trying to be Bashira - that will be a challenge trying to get inside the mind of an eleven year old Afghan child!

apsara03 · 06/12/2014 17:03

Ikea cherin but a Christmas set with tree, present, santa claus etc

cherin · 06/12/2014 17:18

Can I take CJ's point of view? (Feeling free to swear?)

Ilovelblue · 06/12/2014 17:20

Rhubarb I would be happy to give it a go, so long as you're not in a rush. I've no real time to spare over the next few days - some work stuff as well as Christmas stuff. I'd be happy to take Molly or Smurf. How about we get a man's point of view for CJ - do you think we could persuade SPO?

Talking of a man's point of view, I wonder if we could also persuade him to do the pixie equivalent of her diary for CJ?

Also, am I being completely stupid, but I can't find pixie's work on the fanfic website?

Ilovelblue · 06/12/2014 17:23

Cherin oops, sorry, we must have posted at the same time. If you're being CJ, let's try and persuade SPO to do the other diary I suggested.

icemist · 06/12/2014 18:01

Fab idea ladies Smile

lloveblue have you set the filters for "all"? When you first go onto the OG fan fiction it only shows the ones with lower ratings. pixie's is rated M

Rhubarb01 · 06/12/2014 18:03

Iloveblue you need to select all ratings or the M rating if you want to find *Pixies" work.

No hurry for the fiction. I might gonna need to get into character and do some research - I haven't watched OG for weeks. Yes, it is possible.

Who wants to be Molly?

Rhubarb01 · 06/12/2014 18:05

Sorry Iloveblue you said you'd do either Molly or Smurf. So we just need one more volunteer to be someone!

Nickel45 · 06/12/2014 18:36

So sorry to hear Christmas is a tough time for some of you guys. This is a brilliant place to talk about things. Like CJ (sort of) says you can talk to us if it helps, and we'll try get you through it in one piece (ok that's nothing like what he says, but you what I mean!!)

cherin · 06/12/2014 18:42

Exactly!
Well it's generally known that Xmas is the toughest time, I read somewhere its also statistically the month (with january) with highest number of suicides...what with the feeling of loneliness, the making summary of things done/missed, the low light levels etc...
BUT I am sure it's nice and hot in Afghanistan, and we are all soldiering on!!
(I went running this morning and it was beautiful...if only the pavement wasn't so frosty and slippery!! But I decided that I was acclimatised to the conditions and went anyway :-) and it actually felt good!)

cherin · 06/12/2014 18:55

Anyway, as we're on the subject....I need to share a recommendation for a natural anti-depressant. M&S now has a range of "best of", don't know if you ever tried their posh Nutella, it's an Italian brand called Venchi. 6£ a pot, which sounds a lot until you taste it (and I tell you it's actually 40% more expensive in Italy! No idea why). Good idea for a hamper. Or simply for a cheery breakfast on a gloomy winter day.

Richtea19 · 06/12/2014 18:59

ilove sorry it's a bad time too for you. Like you I lost my Mum, it was 6 years ago but she was the "best christmas mummy" home baking, house looked amazing, just the best. For several years I tried to replicate it, but realised that actually the past is where it needed to stay, and now I have fond memories and do Christmas our way (usually a bit hectic!)

..and talking hectic, I am covered in icing sugar and kitchen looks like Karbol! I have marzipan and iced 5 cakes (4 mini) and made a batch of ginger biscuits. Pictures attached.

Then DH and I went to our little town which was SO Christmassy, and managed to have some quality time together over a cuppa. Lovely shops full of stag stuff, I bought two tree decorations, attached in photo. The window of the shop had two massive stags, thought maybe that was a bit far to ask if I could have them!

Great idea rhubarb about a twist on thr fanfic. Not confident to write anything but I would love to read it.

SPO I am so very impressed with collecting pine cones and spraying. I do that with old branches and hang the ginger biscuits on them.

Off to get rid of the icing sugar in my hair and have a very large G&T :)

The collapsed stag/reindeer took forever to make and looks nothing like the picture!

Richtea19 · 06/12/2014 19:07

cherin I have seen that range in M&S ,normally on the end of an aisle, I will look next time I'm in there. My friend that flys with BA always gets me this yummy dulce a letche (prob spelt it wrong) from Argentina. It's so cheap. I use it for banofie pie, but I do sometimes just dip my finger in !!!!!

cherin · 06/12/2014 19:09

richtea, don't know what you do in RL, but you have a massive talent as cake decorator!!!!! These are adorable!

Rhubarb01 · 06/12/2014 19:10

Richtea you are the nuts at Christmas cakes. Oh golly, I've only got one to do and that will take me forever and probably just have the obligatory holly and berries on it as usual. I prefer eating it to decorating it! The stag/reindeer is regarding his antlers with a degree of trepidation. What is he thinking?

Nickel45 · 06/12/2014 19:11

I'm so impressed with the cakes and biscuits richtea and decs SPO. I'm going out again tonight (bit like busses, not been out for months!) but i really don't want to go! It's with a bunch of mums who (I'm sure with the best intentions?!) like to reorganise your life and tell you what you are doing wrong ... So that'll be fun!! (sorry, that sounds so bitchy, but it's a hard work night!). Think I might be drinking again ... And will be trying to check what you lot are up to ... But won't be getting my phone out anywhere near them, as someone is bound to ask what I'm doing. Just one of those evenings you have to get through!
