Original thread here, disappearing scarves, grey-haired doppelgängers and twin theories abound. Has anyone done a spreadsheet yet?

I don't think the garage took 3 days to identify the problem. Ollie was taken the same day as the breakdown, and the parents went back to the garage after a few days. Ollie's mum was holed up in the hotel for a few days and Tony was presumably within walking distance of the places he visited.

Wellthatsit · 29/11/2014 11:42

There's definitely been a co er up of Tony killing Ian.

I wonder if Tony (present day) has been in prison though (not for murder - too short a time line) as he has the look if a man with little money ( his coat looks like it's from a charity shop) and its not totally clear why he has resurfaced today after a hiatus since 2009. Yes, the scarf picture drew him back, but we've heard nothing of what he's been doing before then...

mewkins · 29/11/2014 12:33

Completely going aginst all my previous theories I wonder whether Hotel Eden - the name-has significance. Like some kind of place of refuge. Perhaps the garage people directed them there because they had a child with them and they knew that he wasn't safe.... I wonder if we are all suspecting the mayor is dodgy but he is the one who is trying to save children... hmm not sure I have a grip on this!

Anyway this could easily just be a side story- still stickinh with the theory that it's someone closer to home that actually tookOllie.

And Reem I think that yes the grandad may well have seen Ollie since his disappearance.

reem1 · 29/11/2014 13:30

Highly improbable I know but I say it in case it turns out to be true...

Two characters are dead so far - could there be a link? Ian and Emily's dad were about the same age, we know that Ian was dodgy and I have a feeling that there is more to Emily's dad that we know so far, Ian spoke of his brother..... Could it be Emily's dad? Possibly she has never met him before. ( unless we want to go Molly's route again Grin)

funambulist · 29/11/2014 14:43

Interesting theory Reem1. I think it's amazing how many different solutions we've come up with. Surely one of them must be right.

Regarding the garage I think the time line is:

Morning: car breaks down, taken to garage, dead battery, Hotel L'Eden recommended.

Later that morning: Ollie and family arrive at Hotel L'Eden. Alain leaves for his meeting.

During the day: Ollie and family explore the area. Emily (I think) takes a photo of Ollie on a grassed area wearing his yellow scarf.

Late afternoon/early evening: Tony gets a call to say the car is fixed. I guess that if it hadn't been for Ollie's disappearance they would have left the next day. They all eat an evening meal (possibly watched by one of the multitude of white-grey haired men in the town. Ollie and Tony decide to go swimming even though it's getting late.

Early evening: Ollie and family return to the hotel to get swim things. Emily stays there with a book. Ollie and Tony go swimming (white-grey haired man walks past the pool).

Dusk: Ollie and Tony get dry and dressed. Ollie is thirsty and wants water. They go to the bar. Tony let's go of Ollie's hand and he disappears.

Just after 10pm: Tony searching for Ollie. No alibi for 9 minutes of that time.

I am still confused by Ollie's age. If he is "almost 3" in September 2004 how can he be 5 when he vanishes less than 2 years later? I wonder if the programme makers have made a mistake here and he was either almost 4 in September 2004 or 6 when he vanished. I suspect the former as it would mean that it is possible for Ollie to have been conceived at the time of Emily's alleged affair with Greg.

ILovedYouYesterday · 29/11/2014 14:57

Great thread. I am another one gripped by this series and loving all the theories on here.

I think Emily's Dad will help Tony cover up Ian's murder.

Child's camp bed is at the foot of the parents bed in the hotel. I've noticed them putting newspapers on it and sitting on it. Fox toy was on it early on (when Emily got the call that Ollie was gone, the bed was all set up for him) but has moved now I think.

Oh what a joy to find this thread. I came onto MN today as I had questions about The Missing and was going to start a thread and then found the original thread and this follow-on one. It has taken me almost 2 hours to catch up - better than an episode of The Missing itself!

I was bothered by the boat and Victor appearing on it but now understand that Mary Garrett has dementia and this is where she is in her head. But the conversations she is having with Ian (on the boat, but actually in her head) are strange. I haven't rewatched, but doesn't he say something like 'we got away with it' or something like that? Why 'we'?

Also when Emily (looks very like Kate McCann when in 2006) goes to visit Mary in 2006 Mary calls her "Mrs Hughes" and Emily says 'but I never told you my name'. So Mary has to be involved in some way with Ian's 'problem'.

I completely missed the one-night-stand with Monique - I must have dozed off whilst watching that bit (last night, very late, on ipad, on iplayer). Will rewatch tonight.

Other questions/observations I have are:

Ziane - why is he in prison? He was also doing some dodgy phone calling in one of the earlier episodes (I think journo was spying on him from memory). Is he involved?

Unpleasant journo. He wasn't in Episode 4 or 5. Would love to know what he knows.

Dying to know how Tony disposed of Ian's body. Or perhaps Ian is not dead and disappeared another time....

Borg had no idea that Ian was 'gone' when in 2014 he goes to Ian's company HQ to find him. Why was he trying to find him in 2014?

I don't think Mark is all he seems either. Why did he lie about his promotion? Why was he deleting Emily's phone messages from Tony in 2014? Don't you think it rather odd that he and Emily are together?

So glad there are still three episodes to go....

Pixel · 29/11/2014 17:49

his first words when he saw Emily were "oh baby...." Could be a nickname that's stuck. Have you never seen Dirty Dancing? Grin.

I think Emily's dad mistook James for Ollie simply because he wanted it to be him having never got over his disappearance, and was probably doped up on drugs so a bit confused.

There is definitely something dodgy about Mark. I didn't trust him from the start but can't put my finger on it.

Pixel · 29/11/2014 17:52

Sorry should have said I think that bit was just put in to show another twist of the knife for poor Emily, similar to James calling her Mum and then asking for his real mum. It's just to illustrate that years after the event it's the little unexpected things that catch you by surprise and still hurt.

OttiliaVonBCup · 29/11/2014 17:58

Mark is protecting Emily. He thinks she's been through enough unpleasantness and doesn't want to add to it.
One of the reasons she's with him is because he seems the opposite to volatile and violent Tony. He also comes with James as a bonus - a substitute for Ollie.

OttiliaVonBCup · 29/11/2014 18:02

I don't think just washing will get rid of anything other than bits of dirt.
You can only get rid of bacteria with bleach or soap, and I do hope no one uses this on meat.

OttiliaVonBCup · 29/11/2014 18:03

Oh!
Sorry.
Back to the chicken thread.

EauRouge · 29/11/2014 18:17

I wondered if you were pondering how Tony was going to get rid of the evidence Grin

Pixel I think Emily's dad mistook James for Ollie simply because he wanted it to be him having never got over his disappearance, and was probably doped up on drugs so a bit confused. This is what I thought/think, but you've worded it so more eloquently than I could have.
Haha Ottilia I thought you were talking about the blood on the boat where Tony stoved Ian's head in. Grin

toldmywrath · 29/11/2014 18:22

X post with EauRouge !

OttiliaVonBCup · 29/11/2014 18:25

You can get rid of blood stains with bleach, so I wasn't too far off.
Grin

toldmywrath · 29/11/2014 18:32

By the way I hope no-one is suggesting washing chicken before cooking- that is pointless & potentially dangerous ((needs link to chicken thread)) Grin

OttiliaVonBCup · 29/11/2014 18:35

No one?
You'd be surprised.
There will be a new BBC drama on this soon.

In chat, in the top third of threads.

BingoBonkers · 29/11/2014 18:37

All I can say is it BETTER be a bloody good ending. I don't want to be left on a cliffhanger for the last episode. I will be most displeased.

BeyondTheTreelights · 29/11/2014 19:37

Bet tony is kicking himself now, didnt need to bash his head in, he could have just washed a chicken in the general vicinity...

mewkins · 29/11/2014 20:21

I think I need to watch back the conversations on the boat (I was sterilising bottles at the time). Suggests that Mary knew what was going on but turned a blind eye...or perhaps was scared for her own life. Back to Molly, Ian refers to 'molly was a mistake'. But doesn't actually say what happened to her. So I am not convinced she was murdered... I think we may meet her by the end of ther series.

I can't help thinking that as it draws to a conclusion everyone we think are the good guys turn out to be sinister (Tony already revealed to be violent) while the ones that appear to be dodgy (mayor, mark etc) are actually decent. Vincent, a paedophile, for example is desperate to correct his behaviour and get some justice for victims of abuse.

Gumnast2014 · 29/11/2014 20:37

I'm total lost can done with Colin the characters particularly Ian and milky

Gumnast2014 · 29/11/2014 20:43

All the characters.

Ian and Molly

Ohmygrood · 30/11/2014 00:17

I think it's likely that the person who took Ollie was a woman who could have been taken for either his mother or grandmother.
So possibly Molly or Ian's wife.
Ian's wife could've done it I reckon.
