Why do so many US series get cancelled and leave us dangling?

Where has Once Upon A Time Gone?
Thirteenth floor cancelled.
Dracula cancelled
Penny dreadful cancelled.
Fast forward (which was a brilliant idea and well acted)

I am sure there are tons more. I now rarely bother with US series!

I think they are so keyed into making money they stretch out a good idea forever in case it's a hit and when it's not as popular as it should be they cancel. Much better idea to compress the idea into a brief series (note Sherlock) rather the this TV teasing.

Greek. I liked watching that oh and ugly Betty

Stealthpolarbear · 01/11/2014 21:19

Dh moaned about firefly
I know it a comedy rather than a series but franklin and bash was brilliant and I assume isn't coming back

Onedropoflove · 01/11/2014 21:20

Brothers and Sisters seemed to stop midway

trikken · 01/11/2014 21:21

I thought ONCE was still going?

SeptemberBabies · 01/11/2014 21:22

Flash Forward

From the makers of Lost. Brilliant first series, then cancelled. I have always wanted to know how it would end.

Plomino · 01/11/2014 21:23

And they cancelled Intelligence , although I have heard there's a campaign to get it picked up by another channel . Idiots !

Figster · 01/11/2014 21:27

Once is still going just no uk broadcaster which is annoying!!

Shame about penny dreadful been meaning to watch s1

Gunpowder · 01/11/2014 21:29

I really liked flash forward too. Sad

Stealthpolarbear · 01/11/2014 21:30

Did that thing about numbers with kiefer Sutherland go anywhere?

Itsfab · 01/11/2014 21:37

Touch was great but stopped after 2 series.

o0 · 01/11/2014 21:37

And all those crappy reality shows get renewed year after year.

They make tv as a vehicle for adverts. For the time slot the show is in they want to attract a particular demographic for advertisers. If they are not getting that mix (the right % of 18-35, gender split, earnings bracket etc) they will cancel shows that are critically acclaimed and that attract a lot of (the wrong) viewers.

RaRaSkirtsForever · 01/11/2014 21:38

Totally agree about Brothers and Sisters!!

They used to drag out everything to the "nth" degree but then in the final episode Sally Field did a voice over that gave us in three minutes more information than we ever had.

Such a shame.

Loved Pan Am as well, the crazy scheduling by BBC2 did not help either...

ContentedSidewinder · 01/11/2014 21:39

Loved both Intelligence and Almost Human, gutted that both got cancelled. My bereavement started with Firefly many moons ago Grin

Once is definitely still going as there are clips of new episodes on YouTube featuring Frozen characters and my favourite man Hook

I think it is because the networks are constantly wanting new shows to hook people in so viewing figures are the be all and end all. I always feel like things are left unfinished.

MasqueradeWaltzer · 01/11/2014 21:39

I've seen friends in the US tweeting about OUAT, so I'm pretty sure a new series is on over there.

I'm miffed about Penny Dreadful though.

Cocolepew · 01/11/2014 21:40

Once is available on Netflix, not sure if its the US version. DD watches it.

Cocolepew · 01/11/2014 21:41

I loved Prime Suspect USA but it was cancelled.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 01/11/2014 21:41

I loved Glory Daze, cancelled after one series

mausmaus · 01/11/2014 21:43

Hassled · 01/11/2014 21:45

Dead Like Me should have run and run - I loved that series. Stopped after 2 seasons, for no reason I can fathom.

starsandunicorns · 01/11/2014 21:45

cupofsneeze · 01/11/2014 21:47

The new series of Dallas has been cancelled after 3 seasons.

I loved Flash Forward.

Stealthpolarbear · 01/11/2014 21:48

Glory daze was excellent!! Not sure it was ever meant to have more than one series though, I got the impression that was always it.

PercyHorse · 01/11/2014 21:48

I liked Prime Suspect USA too. Totally unlike Prime Suspect but really good as a TV police programme. I was watching it and the Canadian police thing King around the same time and they were both cancelled.
